I had originally bought 4 firestone tires from Tires Plus in 2000. I had my tires rotated by another company in March of 2002 and was told that they couldn't do it because the car would shake, so they put them back. I was told then that one of the tires in back had bad belts.

I took by car to Tires Plus and was told that all 4 tires needed to be replaced and that all 4 tires had a problem. Luckily, I paid for a warranty on them when I bought them. Tires Plus looked into new tires for me and said they would get back to me on the cost. Their cost to me was based upon the amount of tread left. Basically 50%. When they got back to me they told me that the tires that were on my car was an 'S' series and my car required a 'H' series. They offered to give me 4 Bridgestone Tires - Edger or something like that which is an 'R' series and was told that it was a grade better then 'H'. Not sure if that was true.

These new tires cost me about $160, which wasn't a bad cost. But when I got to Tires Plus they said that I needed new struts in my 1998 Nissan Altima GLE with 72,000 miles on it at a cost of over $500. I told him I was going to wait. I took my car to Hummel Nissan in Des Moines and asked them to check it out. They said my struts were fine and that they usually don't start having to change struts until after 140,000 miles or more.

Hummel Nissan noticed that I had new tires and had thought someone told me that I needed new struts. Tires Plus is a big rip-off and I will never go there again. And they wonder why consumer confidence is bad. Corporate rip-offs!

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

understand struts

AUTHOR: Frank - (U.S.A.)

sometimes replacement of shocks and or struts is for maintance of the "under side" of a vehicle. In one mile the average shock move 1,750 times! On a vehicle with 75,000 miles........well you do the math. We've been told since we all started driving,"Change your oil!" The reason we change the oil is to make the inside of the engine laast longer. The main reason to replace shocks or struts is to make the under side of the car last longer. Shocks and struts hold the tire on the ground. They also slow the travel of the vehicle. If you can decrease the weight tranfer from front to rear when braking and side to side when turning, you will increase the life of everything under the car,I.E. tires, brakes, tie rods, ball joints, alignments etc. If a car was brought to a shop and the customer requested shock or strut replacement and the store mananger suggested an oil change to extend engine life, would there be a letter written on this board?

If you read the manufacturers scheduled maintenence for any vehicle you'll see that shocks and struts should be checked every 12,000 miles and replaced REGARDLESS of outward appearance every 36 to 40k miles. 74k miles is alot to expect out of a set of struts, especially on a midsize import.

The fact that the rear tires were obviously cupped can be caused by the struts or lack of tire maintenance. The suggestion to replace your struts was not a sales ploy, but could save you from replacing more tires in the future.

Most dealers and tire manufacturers will not warranty a set of tires regardless of any warranties you have if damaged by mechanical wear (struts) or failure to maintain properly. You were being treated more than fairly and should know a little on the subject before you point fingers based on someone working at a dealerships opinion. They are simply playing a mind game all too common in this business.
