I bought battery for BMW X5 from "Total Battery Ottawa". After using for a couple of days, one of the mornings the car didn't start. Alarm system and remote starter were deprogrammed because of the dead battery and didn't work anymore (When the car was bought, it didn't come with codes for  its current remote starter. It means if I want to have remote started working - it will cost me over $700 to get a new one installed.)

It was very hectic to spend valuable time going to buy a new battery from CAPS, installing it in cold weather conditions.

Then I brought the battery back to "Total Battery" and asked Mark Warlick (Assistant Manager) for a refund and explained my problem to him. He basically told me its my fault that the battery died, I simply should have been charging the battery over night. This sounded quite funny. The idea of having to bring a car battery home overnight to get it charged sounds absurd. Mark Warlick refused to refund full $124.16 paid for the battery originally. But he was kind to offer a $3 refund for dead battery.

From the President of Total Battery

AUTHOR: Lefty - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, September 29, 2011

Hi there. I work for Total Battery, and this guy also posted this slander about us on Google Maps. Please read the response from our company's President below. I took the liberty of pasting this for him here, as this guys story is old news, and I just want to make sure the situation has both sides on each site he posted it on.

"This is a response to the next review by AndreyG Andrey has omitted a few critical points. Our manufacturer Johnson Controls sets warranty policy and what is covered. (we do not make batteries we are a distributor) Johnson Controls makes and owns INTERSTATE Batteries All Battery manufacturers do not warranty FROZEN batteries Andrey forgot to mention in his scathing rebuke that his special expensive alarm system had killed his battery and that he had left his car sitting for over 2 weeks during winter and that the Car had discharged the battery. When a battery is discharged the acid turns to water and during freezing temperatures the battery freezes and cannot be recharged due to safety reasons. Since the vehicle discharged the battery, this was no fault of the battery but the car causing it, and therefore no warranty would be allowed as it was not a defect in the battery that cause the issue. This is the same case if you hit a bump and puncture your oil pan and the oil drains out of the engine and blows it, you will not get a warranty as damage was caused by hole in the oil pan not the engine. Mark Warlick did suggested a Battery Minder charger which keeps a battery charged when a car is parked for a longer period of time, this is a common device used by car and rv and motorcycle users to prevent batteries going dead during storage. AndreyG did not want to listen to any of our points and simply demanded or rather threaten that if we did not give him a new battery he would contact the BBB and every other source he could think of (Google maps being another example). Mark Warlick the assitant manager contacted Head Office for a final decision, when the Head Office head of the intimidation tactic that AndreyG was using, Head Office decided not to submit to the extortive intimidation tactic. Had AndreyG been more polite and civil he would have found Total Battery more than accommodating he would not have got a free battery but we would certainly have given him one at a substantial discount, but AndreyG did not want that only a free battery so he chose another path of making complaints which he must now bear the consequences for. Since then AndreyG has contacted the BBB and elsewhere. To the point where it is now almost absurd harassment over abattery. Since 1993 we have supplied batteries and power-solutions for 1000's of satisfied customers all over the world and I am satisfied with the excellent performance that my staff provides all customers. If there was any substance to AndreyG summary we would not be in business today nor expanding our locations or product offerings. I do take all complaints seriously but in the instance when a customer uses complaint tactics to avoid the responsibility of his own problems and uses threatening tactics to get his way, I find that highly offensive and as a business owner refuse to negotiate or accommodate such behaviour. Alan Simpson President Total Battery Group of Companies"
