As everyone else did, i checked on line quotes. i thought the more well known movers were a little pricey as i was on a strict budget. markieta at transport moving group gave me a decent quote, told me they would lovingly wrap my belongings in bubble wrap, would do the packing for me, would take things apart and put them back together upon arrival, everything was included in the price, and they were very professional. she then told me i would have to have a cashier's cheque for half the quoted amount ready for the driver when they arrived. the down payment was 200 dollars to hold the move. the moving van showed up a day earlier. i thought it would be from transport moving group but was surprised it was AY transport. i asked them who they were (the driver and passenger had heavy accents) and they told me they had just gotten a fax from the company to come move me, and they were contracted. i never heard of them. i was handed paperwork to sign, and they were very explicit that they needed payment in the form of cash or postal money order.

they began wrapping my furniture, and would charge me outrageous prices for "special" boxing of items such as my grandfather clock. at one point, i was told by one of them if they had to pack anything, it would cost labour. (i already had most everything packed). it took them over 9 hours to load my belongings into a smaller than expected truck. i had to leave several items behind.

i signed the form requesting delivery in 5 days from the date they arrived, and was assured by the driver my belongings would be there within that time frame. i was also told my belongings would be taken to San Jose, where they would then be placed into a larger, east/west moving van and transported along with other peoples who live in this area. the driver refused the cashier's cheque i had because i followed original directions and it was made out to another company.

i contacted the company when i got to my destination, and was told i owed 1600 dollars additional (original quote 3300 dollars) because the weight was 2 thousand lbs over the original quote, and i needed to immediately wire them half of the price, or i could pay the entire amount and receive a 5 percent discount.

here it is, january 23, and i am getting the runaround from theresa. i spoke with her on sunday, and was told my belongings would get to me by the end of the week, which was fri, sat, or sun. i wired money from my bank the day after mlk holiday, and after she called me verifying the money was sent, i again asked about my belongings. she gave me the drivers name and cell phone number.

i spoke with the driver on thursday of this week, who told me he would be on his way on saturday, and he would call me, he has my number. i had to call him again last night, and was told, the company keeps on giving him little jobs to do in california, and he won't be here until monday evening.

i'm praying real hard all of my things arrive safely, together, and all in one piece. like all of you, i've worked hard for my things, and there are a lot of things that are irreplacible. i've read the horror stories from everyone on this web site, so i'm really nervous here. i guess i should have paid the extra and went with a reputable company like allied or mayflower, but i had never heard of ay transport, so how was i to know?
