I was using a job search website that required I provide a credit score. TransUnion had their ad right there offering a FREE Credit Score. So I request my credit score. TransUnion promptly sent me my score, but without my realizing it, they also opened an account for me, using my credit card number, which I never gave them. I think I only had to give them the last 4 digits of my SS number. Of course they have access to all of our credit information, since they are a credit reporting agency.

I found out when I was having trouble with credit card billing website and I requested a change to paper credit card billing statements. TransUnion was deducting $19.95 per month for 7 months from my credit card. So I shut down that card with my bank, then called TransUnion. TransUnion agreed to close out the fraudulent 'account', but they refused to return the stolen money. Although they did not deny that it was stolen. Ironically, the service they were fraudulently charging me for was Fraud Protection. My credit score has always been pretty nice. I can't wait to see what it will look like from now on. A credit reporting agency can do a lot of damage.

Not quite...

I'd actually be more concerned about this "Job Search Site" that required a credit score and quite conveniently had an ad to a company that would provide you with a "free" credit score.

Do you really think that was a coincidence? Of course not. This "job search" site got a commission for directing you to it and are the ones who put the ad on the site. On top of that I have yet to see a legitimate "job search" site require a person to provide them with a credit score. There are just too many different scoring models that unless they require a specific score and use that exact same score for everyone there is no way scores can be used as a legitimate measure.

Now, if at any time you provided this "job search" site with your credit card information I can also just about guarantee they are the ones who forwarded it to Trans Union to sign you up.

If you did not provide the job search site with a Credit Card, I can guarantee that you did provide it to TU as well as a lot more information than just the last for digits of your SSN. Trans Union did not just randomly choose a credit card to charge.

Now I am not going to go into the legitimacy of these type of sites and links and that they aren't meant to take advantage of people who are not paying attention. But will before you go into some huge conspiracy. The terms were disclosed to you, yes the link that says you have read and agree to the terms actually does mean something. However, you further made a mistake by not taking responsibility over YOUR accounts and reviewing your statements every month.

A credit reporting agency can do a lot of damage.

- This is not to be mean or rude but to bring you a bit of reality. You are not that important No company or person is going to risk violating Federal Law, Prison time, fines, and possibly getting shut down to take out some "revenge" for someone accusing them of fraud.
