There is a crooked U-Haul place located at 6505 Fondren Rd in Houston TX 77036. It is run by a crooked manager named Carlos, he refused to give me his last name.

Here is how it works. My wife and I needed a truck to pick up a couch and take it to her apartment. Total round trip about 10 miles. U HAUL rents a number of trucks for $19.95 a day and 69 cents a mile. She called and reserved one.

When we got there they didn't have the one they promised her, they had a beat up Toyota with a big box on the back that looked like it had been squashed flat and beat back into shape with a ball peen hammer. My wife was unhappy about that but since we had only a short distance to go and would only need it for an hour or so I talked her into using it. I wish now I had not.

Since we had to wait intill we got off work to pick up the truck we got there at 7 pm. I signed all the paperwork and drove the truck, which was unsafe having busted shocks and very bad brakes, but none the less it was only 10 miles, so I could live with it. They charged us a $75.00 deposit and my wife put the bill on her debit card. They told us they would refund the difference to her card.

The Uhaul place would be closed when we returned but we were told to fill it up with gas and put the keys through the night slot.

We picked up the couch and took it to her place, and I took the truck back, stopping at a Shell station a block from the U Haul place to fill up the truck. It took $11.87 cents worth of gas, which was annoying to say the least since we only drove it 10 miles. I dropped it off at the Uhaul place, put the keys through the slot and went home. I had left my car at the U Haul place.

Several days later my wife called me and asked how much longer would it take the U Haul people to refund the balance to her card. I said I didn't know and to call them. She did and was told that we did not fill up the tank and not only were they keeping the $75.00 deposit they were charging an additional $42.00 for gas. Making the total for renting a $19.95 a day U Haul for two hours $117.00 .

My wife called me and told me what the Uhaul people told her. I called them and told them I had filled up the tank personally and I still had the receipt. They told me to come in and show the receipt to the manager Carlos. I went there the next day when the manager Carlos was there. I thought there had been an innocent mistake.

I went and talked to Carlos. He was very rude and obnoxious to begin with but I ignored that. He showed me a couple of pieces of paper printout with a fuel guage graphic on them. The graphic said the tank was full when we got it. I didn't dispute that even though it took $11.87 in gas for driving 10 miles, either it wasn't completely full or it only gets three miles to the gallon take your pick.

He then showed the second graphic which showed the truck only had 1/2 a tank of gas when I turned it in. It had 7/8 of a tank when I filled it up at the Shell. I attempted to show him the receipt from the Shell station and he refused to look at it. He said Quote " I don't have to look at nothing, you can't tell me nothing get out of my store you b****d!" He then threatened to call the police on me so I left.

I told my wife and she called Carlos herself and was also cussed out. She then called U Haul's Corporate office and was put on hold for an hour and told someone would call her back. No one ever did. She called her bank to dispute the charges but they told her she could not since she had used a debit card.

I called the U Haul at 6505 Fondren the day after this happened to reason with Carlos but he wasn't there. I spoke to one of his employee's there however who told me, I was wasting my time. The employee said quote " He (Carlos) does this all the time, anytime somebody puts the deposit on a card and turns in the truck after hours he screws them on the gas because they can't prove nothing."

The employee refused to give me his name because he said he needed the job. So I am stuck. I could get a lawyer and sue but it would cost a lot more than the $ 70.00 bucks or so we got ripped off for, so this is my last resort.
