This is one day we'll never forget! This ORDEAL lasted over 5 hours so the accounting will be long but please read and don't rent from U HAUL.

My friend, the NUN, called to reserve a 14ft U Haul truck from the Manahawkin, NJ location and was called the day before we were to pick it up that we had to go to Toms River, NJ to pick it up. So, we drove 30 miles out of our way to pick up this truck which did not have a right brake light so every right turn she made, I almost crashed into her.

As we crossed the Manahawkin Bay Bridge on the way to Long Beach Island, NJ, a cloud of smoke began to billow out of the hood. We pulled over on the side of the road -- and, if you've ever been to the Jersey Shore, you know that is almost impossible to find a parking spot for a car, let alone a truck -- and tried to figure out what to do.

My friend called the location where we picked up the truck and was told to call the 800 emergency number. So we did only to be notified that it was a RESTRICTED call and could not be completed from either of our cell phones! We called the office back, were put on hold for 10 minutes then explained the situation -- they said, "Are you sure you dialed the right number?" (um, no, both of us are illiterate) After finally getting a "good" number we placed a call, couldn't understand the person on the other end, explained our situation and then asked, "Did you dial the emergency number?" This went on for about 30 minutes.

We finally got a call back and a report that they were trying to find a mechanic and would be called back in 1/2 hour. THREE HOURS LATER the mechanic called and said he was on the way. In the meantime, we placed another 4 calls to the place where we picked up the truck and we were told that we had to stay with the truck -- like anyone was going to steal it?

The mechanic arrived and could not have been more helpful. Turns out that they had put a new engine and new radiator in but never replaced the fan clutch. Go figure! He towed it and they were able to tell us that there was a truck in Manahawkin available. (that was the original place we were supposed to pick up)

SO, we drive to get the truck, pull off the lot and THERE WERE NO BRAKE LIGHTS. We went back, they fixed them and we were on our way. We crossed over the Manahawkin Bay Bridge and, guess what? THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON.

My advice regarding U-Haul rentals..

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 12, 2006

My advice on U-Haul comes from 15+ years on the road as a commercial driver. As a driver of a Tractor Trailer a U-Haul scares me the most!

There are many reasons, and the first is the overall condition of the trucks in general. These trucks in many cases are being rented out under cost of operation just to move them. This is problem #1. You cannot properly maintain a commercial/rental vehicle properly running on negative earnings.

The public is equally to blame, as they want cheap, but do not understand the real cost of cheap.

The other thing that scares me senseless is that any yahoo that is used to driving a Geo can walk in and rent a 28 foot box truck and drive it cross country! What is wrong with this picture?

Now, I will back up my statement with evidence from the OP. There were 2 women present. They took the truck out on the road without doing a "pre-trip" inspection themselves, or requesting an employee do it in thier presence.

Furthermore, I can guarantee you as a qualified mechanic and Class A commercial driver, that had these women ben looking at the GAUGES and other indicators in the truck, they would have noticed the problem long before "smoke was billowing out from under the hood".

My advice: Leave the truck driving to the pro's.

I think that the CDL requirements should apply evenly to all vehicles by size and weight, not by type of use. This would eliminate the U-Haul problem.

I can't even count the number of U-haul trucks and other rentals I have seen totally scattered over freeways and backroads alike due to an inexperienced driver.
