There are at least 7 other complaints against United Moving System on the web in the last year and a half. Before that, apparently,United Moving System was known by a different name, different license. It's very easy to get licensing for moving companies (maybe 3 weeks?). Fraud can have a field day with your personal belongings in this unregulated free for all kind of market.
I found out the hard way.

Not only did they: 1) Cost me thousands of dollars over their original estimate; 2) Failed to perform their specific written and verbal contractual obligation by not taking apart or reassembling any of my furniture (except one bed frame on pick up); 3) Failed to unload any of my goods except for the mattress upon delivery; 4) Failed to account for their use of materials; 5) Flagrantly wasted materials; 6) Did not allow me to inspect my goods after they were loaded; 7) Threatened to return my goods to New Jersey if I did not pay; 8) Failed to pack or unpack most of my goods (my wife and I did it) but charged me for their labor though "there are no labor charges"; 9) They crossed out my comments on paperwork; 10) Totally failed to return any of my calls once my check was received; 11) Gave me the phone numbers of two different drivers who claimed to have my goods; 12) Broke our box of dishes and misplaced our furniture; 13) Solicited us for a tip after the van was loaded; 14) Failed to provide promised "full insurance" but offered only at 60 cents per pound and refused my attempts to locate other insurance; 15) Arrived at pick up late with only one driver and one assistant; 16) Delivered our goods late; 17) etc. etc. etc. They also totally ruined our planned trip across the country, which was the whole purpose of using a 'moving company".

United Moving Systems was very careful and practiced about how they manipulated information. By compartmentalizing their information and their communications they are able to perpetrate intentional misrepresenations on their customers.

I particularly remember one morning in Nebraska waiting for their promised call, which of course hever came (because they would never, never return a call and would respond to my inquiries consistently as "I'm busy, I'll call you back, or, "_____is busy, he'll call you back"). That morning 9 people had just died in Kansas a couple hunded miles south and we were driving through tornado warnings to get to a bank to wire United Moving Systems money. They had threatened to return our goods to New Jersey if we did not pay. (I had put a stop payment on my second check when they gave me he phone numbers of two different drivers who each swore they had our goods, and United Moving Systems refused to explain any of their breaches of contract nor refute them nor return calls)

But, even though I called their "legal department" (which I think is practicing law without a license, along with their many other specialties) to get their bank information to wire money to, they failed to return my call. The only happy ending so far is that we got most of our things, none of the electrical components, which could have been traced, were missing and none of our personally valuable but unmarketable keepsakes were missing.

Check out their other complaints (about 7 so far, I've found on the web, after hours of search) and check out their strange DOT information, especially the ratings on their drivers and their new insurance carrier. You might also, if you search diligently find reports that they used to operate as another name.

Even their name is a clue. If you look at their website their logo on their truck (not their real truck, I believe, as they only are listed as having two) is almost identical to the logo of United Van Lines which of course they are not.

I am permanently disabled. Their drivers knew it and the salesman knew it and they deliberately took advantage of me.

This is only a brief summary of the issues I will be resolving with them. Omission of other issues and details is only for the purpose of brevity.

Not Much You Can Do

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 27, 2007

Bob, moving companies enjoy a lot of legal Federal protections no other industry in the world offers, protections that allow the types of things to happen to you. The person who contacted the Atty General in her state is going to find out what many people already know - not much can be done at a state or local level about rogue movers. You got suckered in by a low quote, and then the moving company springs a surprise on you. That's why you don't go searching for companies on the internet to move you - you should open a phone book and find an agent of a large moving company that has been legitimately doing business for a long time. The amount you pay the large company might be the same as what you ended up paying (or pay a little less) the scam company to move your items.

Moving is not inexpensive - a legit mover uses a lot of labor and materials to transport goods from origin to destination, whether you believe the use of those materials is excessive or not. On the whole, large moving companies only make a 5% profit on every interstate move, so when a moving company offers you a quote that is one-half the price the large moving company quotes you for your move, it's a scam and you need to RUN.

A few of the 16-17 items you identified the moving company did wrong though are pretty standard in the industry, regardless of whom you move with, and these items are worth noting for the record. For example, 4) Failed to account for their use of materials and 5) Flagrantly wasted materials. No company will provide an exact accounting of the materials used and "wasted" materials is subjective - based on how I used to see packers use materials. Often, the materials are used to safeguard your items - though tape might be the one thing I see abused the most. The others aren't a waste and if used properly, your items arrive at destination in the exact condition that they were packed in.

In addition, 13) Solicited us for a tip after the van was loaded; 14) Failed to provide promised "full insurance" but offered only at 60 cents per pound and refused my attempts to locate other insurance, 15) Arrived at pick up late with only one driver and one assistant; 16) Delivered our goods late. To start with, I hope you provided the people in NYC a tip - regardless of whether they solicited a tip or not. Laborers in the industry are some of the lowest paid and hardest working people you or I will ever meet, and their tips allow them to live somewhere within the city. Otherwise, most laborers would probably starve, and you would never have been able to use a full service mover in NYC. On the 2nd, there is no such thing as "insurance" in the moving industry - there is "valuation" and standard valuation for the industry is $0.60 per pound, which is what you are likely to be offered. A legitimate moving company will offer something called "Full Replacement Valuation" and a scam mover will not. If your mover refused you to seek additional valuation - that should be another clue for you NOT to choose that mover to perform your move. Finally, being late is not a scam - especially in NYC - unless they are more than 24 hours late.

It is unfortunate you chose this mover to perform your move for reasons other than what happened to you - although what happened to you is sad, it is commonplace with companies like this. 98% of legit movers do not need to use the internet to solicit business - though you did finally research movers AFTER your move was complete. If you had done so BEFORE your move, you would never had contracted business with this company. The best way to put a business like this into the ground is for the public not to use them or any mover one finds on the internet....

Bob, you can try to sue them in small claims for the difference between what they quoted you, and what they charged you - however I would review over your contract to see where you are required to file. My guess is that your contract will require you to file in New Jersey only (where they are located) and not where you currently are. However, that's all you'll be able to sue them for - the other damages you cite (or other issues you don't cite) are not actionable as a result of the Carmack Amendment. An attorney will be able to tell you more about that.
