United Reservation Services False claims regarding free travel Internet
The card stated I would be responsible for taxes. Though I've never given in to the temptation to call, and am old enough to know better, this time I bit. I called the number on the card (888-446-6136) and talked to "Gabriel".
She informed me they were a travel club, and I'd have to attend a 90 minute max presentation at a nearby Holiday Inn, not a high pressure sales pitch, then I'd be entitled to the gifts.
I asked her point by point, aside from the taxes, "is the airfare free?" Answer: yes. "Is the hotel free?" Answer: yes. "Is the rental car free?" Answer: yes.
True to her word, the sales pitch was low pressure. It occurred in a meeting room of the hotel, with numerous other couples, and a presenter talking to all of us at once. This presentation was preceded, and followed, with agents talking to the couples one-on-two. All of these discussions lasted almost exactly 90 minutes when we decided it wasn't for us.
They want an $8995 one time family membership payment, plus a $399 administration fee, plus $199 annual dues, and for that they reportedly will save you thousands on travel expenses (they would have to in order to jusify that cost, no?).
Then they trotted out the gift vouchers. I had read a review which stated there were hidden "activation fees". I could see these fees listed on the vouchers. I asked about them, and the person told me he "thinks" these fees were refundable, more of a deposit. As we read the vouchers, that's not what it said.
Also, instead of 3 free days car rental, the voucher said 50% off the car rental. When I pointed out any discrepencies in their vouchers versus the post card, I was told (more than once) that they "didn't know what was on the card". On the voucher, it asks "do you prefer to receive a $100 Travelocity gift card or $100 in free gasoline. It is not clear if that means instead of the hotel/car, or in addition to.
The activation fee for the airfare is $35/person. For the hotel/car it's $25/person. So that's $120. You mail the fees to Dynamic Premium Incentives, whoever that is. Their name was never discussed during the presentation.
In closing, you activate your vouchers by sending in your fees, then they are good for one year. You have to book the airfare at least 90 days in advance, and can't include major holidays. You book the hotel/car at least 60 days in advance.
All in all, I'm way to detail oriented to feel comforatable with this amount of "unknowns". You always have the feeling that they're pulling one over on you, and nobody likes that feeling.
