On 7-15-03 I bought a 1996 Plymouth Voyager from Universal. The sale price included a 12 month 12K warranty from a company called PRco (1-800-388-PRCO) The warranty cost $975 plus tax. I bought the warranty because it had a great feature. You could cancel it within 30 days for a full refund!

On August 11th, I went to Universal to cancel the warranty and get my refund. First they said they could not refund because it was part of the price of the car. Then they said they would have to pro-rate it. I pointed out that the contract said full refund. They grudgingly agreed but said they would have to talk to the owner. The next day I called them and now they were saying they couldn't refund it because they might decide to purchase a warranty with a different company. This after I had a signed contract with PRco !!

Later on the same day, I spoke to the owner Mr Hunka, and he said he would refund my money with a $25 paperwork fee deducted. I agreed to this. One week went by without a phone call or check in the mail from Universal. I called again and now their story was that I had only paid $630 for the warranty, not $975. In some material they faxed to the local Better Business Bureau who in turn gave it to me, they actually fraudulently CHANGED the amount on the contract from $975 to $630. They apparently did not realize that I had a copy of the contract showing $975.

In addition to my complaint with the BBB, there is also a complaint filed with the Washington State Attorney General's office. This business owes me $975 plus tax. Watch for further updates.

Complaint taken care of

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, November 09, 2009

this complaint has been taken care of by Universal Sales and Service. They paid back part of the money in May 2004.   In May 2004, I tried to access the Ripoff Report on the internet so I could withwithdraw my complaint but for some reason could not find it online!   I was recently Googling them to see if they had any vans for sale and was shocked to see my complaint still posted.   In the last 5 years, our family members have purchased 3 vans from them and have been satisfied with their prices and service.   If possible, please withdraw my original complaint from the Ripoff Report.

         Sincerely David

Universal Sales owes me $1056.90

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 27, 2004

In mid-October my credit card company (Chase Bank) issued a credit to me for $1056.90 after I sent them paperwork documenting how Universal Sales and Service promised me a refundable extended warranty and did not refund me after I cancelled within the allowed time frame. This refund stood until 2-27-04 when Chase Bank regretfully informed me that they would have to charge it back because the warranty price was not written up on the sales contract. Universal Sales sent 2 different conflicting stories, one to the local BBB and one to the Washington State Attorney General's office. In their letter to the BBB, they admitted that I purchased a warranty but they changed the price from $975 to $630 on the contract! I have a copy of a check they tried to give me for $605 ($630 minus a $25 paperwork fee) but I would not accept it.(By the way, the RipOff Report is exactly right in their criticism of the BBB. The BBB definitely sides with the businesses that pay them subscription fees and against the little guy who gets taken advantage of.) In their letter to the attorney general's office, they changed their story completely and said that they had included the extended warranty at no cost! Apparently they are not aware that both the BBB and the attorney general's office shared copies of their correspondence with me. I have them dead to rights in an OBVIOUS LIE! Let my experience be a lesson for the consumer to get everything written up on the contract when purchasing a vehicle and an extended warranty. The day I bought the vehicle, I was in a desperate situation. Our regular vehicle was in the shop for transmission repair and was not ready as promised. We were already one day late on our vacation trip to Minnesota. Renting a vehicle was exorbitant so I decided to purchase a vehicle and resell it after we came back (which I did) I had been up since 5 am that day and was signing paperwork on the car at about 7 pm. I wasn't thinking about all the details on the contract. The salesman said the warranty was refundable if cancelled within 30 days. I trusted him. He seemed like a nice guy. Apparently, you can't trust anyone these days. This is still not over. I will immediately make a claim in small claims court and unless the judges are in the pocket of unscrupulous auto dealers, I expect to get a judgement in my favor. If it takes picketing outside this business to get my refund, I will do it. DO NOT PATRONIZE this dishonest business and get everything in writing when you buy a car!
