I rented an apartment at University Glen for over 5 years.  Was late on rent one time due to being out of town.  My rent payments total almost $100,000.  The apartment was left super clean, no damage and never a complaint from another neighbor.

Upon moving out, I turned in the keys and told the management desk the movers had accidentally grabbed a bag that had my pool key and guest parking passes in it.  The man who checked me out said no problem, mail them when you can and noted it on the form.  No problem... think again.

I received the move out statement via email and was charged $50 for pool key and $25 for parking pass.  I emailed back immediately and explained the keys were mailed the day before to please make an adjustment when they are received.  Their response was "Im sorry, all move-out items are due on the day of move-out and the charges have already been processed. We are unable to make changes at this point."

My response was "Why didn't the gentleman that took my close out tell me this?  He said mailing them would be ok as they were in a bag that the movers took by mistake and it was already in the back of the truck. I dont think this is fair and he should have informed me mailing it doesn't matter and to just keep it or throw it away. Please reconsider as we were loyal, clean, quiet tenants for 5 years. "

And their final response "Sorry for the delay in responding. We normally do the move-out charges on the day of move-out and whatever is not returned at that time is charged right away. As a courtesy, we allowed a few days for return of the items since you mentioned it to XXXX, but still have yet to receive them in todays mail. This is why it is important to have at least those 30 days during your notice to get all of the keys and permits in order for return. Im sorry we are unable to help you further."

So naturally I responded with my surprise that they weren't willing to waive a measly $75 after collecting almost $100K on time, never a bounced check etc.  Why check someone out, give no time frame, make it a no big deal situation only to find out later its a totally different story.  Why not just tell me to throw out the keys as it won't matter sending them back?

After forwarding my response to the director of housing, they have agreed to finally refund the money for the keys.  So bottom line is never give up if you were instructed incorrectly, keep fighting, even for a $1, as every penny counts
