I have been going to college for 3 years, but I recently moved and and started working full-time. The state I transferred to wanted me to retake several of the courses I already took so I looked into The University of Phoenix which goes by the name Axia College. I had taken an online course through my previous college over christmas break and really enjoyed it, but this was far from enjoyable.

It started out with a few miscommunications..... I was told it was around $300 per class which is the basic average for online classes. However once I signed up, they informed me that it was more like $265 per credit hour. Overall they charged me $1700 for 2 classes.

I was then directed to a financial services person who directed me through their online enrollment for Federal GRANTS... the key word is GRANT. I do not beleive in loans and never in my life would agree to using one. However, the financial officer applied me for the Loans along with the grants. Originally I was told I was getting $4,000 worth of Pell Grants but after closer review was down to $400. And that is not the worst part.

I started my first block of classes still optimistic, but from day one there were technical problems and not from my end! My computer was perfectly compatible with there system. The teacher however could not access the course half the time and would go unheard from for days at time. She couldnt keep track of our assignments and most of them time couldnt even open a simple attachment. She then decided to quite 2 weeks prior to the class ending.

So we were givin a replacement teacher who was teaching other classes at the same time so kept confusing what class we were and posted the wrong assignments. Needless to say I learned nothing from that class! The second class the teacher just took 2 wks to respond to any concerns and by then I had been doing half of my assignments incorrectly and couldnt change my grade.

After the first block they automatically sign you up for a second session of classes which are just as pointless as the first, because they still have not reviewed your transcripts to assign you into classes of your need. After hours of conferencing on the phone I got them to change my classes only to decided I was too frustrated to go through the process again. I withdrew after my first session however I am still being charged for 2 sessions worth of Financial Loans and any Pell grant money I was supposed to recieve will be revoked.

It has been 2 months since I have withdrawn and still no help from the financial services to give back the money to the lender for the second session I never took.

Please stay away from Axia or University of Phoenix!!! If you must take online courses, do so through a local and trusted university or community college! Dont get charged 3 times as much for classes that wont count towards anything!!!

Jenny,

When you file your Financial Aid application with UOP or Axia you must go through a series of acknowledgments via the Financial Aid Web site at UOP. These acknowledgments state policies, restrictions and procedures for how financial aid works.

Additionally, there is a portion on there that states, and I quote "In addition to grants, are you interested in applying for federal student loans?" The options given are "Yes, Loans and Grants" or "No, Grants Only". By default the Yes option is checked off since this is the most common option, but a student has the option to choose grants when applying. Only the student can designate this as this website is inaccessible to employees. The website has been banned, for at least the past 3 years, from access at all campus and company facilities to prevent any such abuse.

So if you only wanted to apply for grants, was this option not available to you? By the way, if you want to find out from an external source how much money you were qualified for and was sent to the school, check out (www.nslds.ed.gov). You can simply login and check out any past and present loan/grant info.
