Around March of 09' I enrolled in University of Phoenix's online program (Axia College). In the beginning I thought that program was great. I made All A's and B's, mostly A's. Neither the Professors nor advisors ever had a problem with me with my school work.

As time progressed my financial advisor began hassling me about me needing extra funding for my classes. I had only two classes left, and Axia College claimed that I was out of financial aid and need to pay out of my pocket. I had already applied for a loan before I had enrolled so that I would for sure be able to finish all of my courses.

After learning that my funding had run out I tried to withdraw from my from the Axia program, but they would not allow me to do so.Now I am still two classes away of finishing the year off. Axia College has turned turned me over to the collection agency. I honestly feel that none of this is fair. I do not wish to ever attend Axia College again!

Axia College has totally discouraged me from all online courses. I am completely disappointed in them. Usually when individuals apply for financial aid and loans it is because they are not able to afford to pay for classes on their on; which is exactly why I applied.

I am so determined to complete school, and I am in serious need of help. If anyone can help me please do so. I have not paid University of Phoenix nor the collection ageny  because I have hope that there is another way that this situation can be dealt with.

Response to Major Change

AUTHOR: Shele - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 05, 2010

Changing my major is not a problem because I have not gone through the actual process yet. Although I wish to change my major I have not actually gone through with it. I cannot change my major until I figure out how to resolve the situation with Axia College.

As of now my major still remains the same, but I do understand how it would be a problem if I were to have chagned while I was attended Axia College.

POSTED: Wednesday, May 05, 2010

My career change will not be a problem because I am not enrolled in any school right now. I only wish to change my career whenever I get everything straightened out with Axia Colelge. My career is still the same at the moment.

Changing Majors

AUTHOR: Goodwitch - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 04, 2010

You mentioned that you changed you degree program.  This may be your problem.  When you change programs you sometimes have to take additional courses that are required for your new program.  This is how that usually works.  A student receives their financial aid in two disbursements, twice a year.  The University takes out enough money to cover tuition and other school cost, such as electronic materials.  The remainder of that money is sent to the student.  A wise student puts this money up to cover any classes they fail, or to cover any additional classes they have to take if they change degree programs.  Most students spend the money as fast as they get it.  If you receive your disbursement and it only covers the classes you are scheduled for, and then you change degree program you will not have enough financial aid to cover additional classes.  Did you have additional classes or did you fail any classes?  It doesn't make sense that you would suddenly not have enough financial aid two classes from the end of your academic year.  The first disbursement and the second disbursement are the same.  If the first disbursement covered the first half of your academic year, then the second disbursement would cover the second half of your academic year...unless there were changes in the number of courses you needed to take.

UofP has an Office of Dispute Management that might be able to help you. Their number is 602.557.5566. You might also trying filing a complaint with their accrediting agency, the Higher Learning Commission. ROR doesn't let people post websites so you'll have to google it.

And just for future reference, the FAFSA is a federal application for student aid, not unique to UofP. You shouldn't need to fill it out more than once a year, regardless of the academic calendar.

Good luck!

Im not sure what do to.

I was explained the parent plus loan, and I do not wish to use that because I feel that it is my responsibility to get my education and not my parents. I did try to withdraw, and I was not allowed to do that. I do not understand why I was informed that I ran out of funding, and when I tried to withdraw because I ran out of funding, I was still not able to withdraw.

I would have appreciated a sooner warning that I didn't have enough funding than at the last minute. This would have allowed me to withdraw, and not have to pay them money that I don't have. I do realize that I cannot recieve a transcript from them until I pay them, which is why I am trying to get this sorted out.

I need to know who else to contact in the company other than my financial advisor because I know several students who have had these sorts of problems, who got their balance cleared. When I do get this situation cleared I do not wish to attend at Axia College again.

I have talked to other advisors at Axia College and they never even called me back to help me out. Axia College requires that you reapply at different block times. Their fafsa is done more frequent that regular classes because it's online.

I ofcourse know that my education is important. I was two courses away from finishing my year off but I still had a while to complete my major. I have now changed majors, and am anxious to complete school.

There is a limit on the amount of federal student loans that undergraduates can receive. If you check out the federal student loan website it's broken down for you. You need to review your student aid award letters to see what you've received and what you're being billed for.  It sounds as if you ran out of loan money and Axia is asking you to make up the difference for your previous classes. If that's the case, you're stuck and you have to pay them. However, are you aware that you have to apply for funds every year? Perhaps they didn't explain this to you. You need to file a renewal FAFSA at the beginning of each academic year (which begins in AUgust usually).

They can't refuse you the opportunity to withdraw. However, I think what they were trying to tell you is that it was too late in the semester to DROP the classes and not have to pay for them. Would that be correct? If so, once again, you're stuck and have to pay them.

There are a couple of options you might consider. One would be a parent PLUS loan that you parents take out to help you pay for college. This information is also available on the federal student loan site. Another option might be a private loan. These are harder to get and are usually contingent upon your credit rating. If Axia has sent you to collections this might not be a viable option.

In any event, Axia will not release your transcript to another school (required if you ever want to go somewhere else) until you pay them. So you'll have to figure out a way to do that. Then complete whatever degree you had with them since you're so close to finishing. Then find a better school. Your local state college probably has a several degree options that interest you and can be completed online if that's what you need.

Please don't give up on your education. It's too valuable!
