I was told back in April, 2009 to hand in my resignation by my manager, and then go home for the next 30 days so..well I waited for awhile, turned in my resignation at the begnning of the month and now UOP decided to let me go. Today I was notified I was terminated from my employment. Funny thing about this is that the person in HR, sent the notification to the wrong email address. They label it as a Voluntary Resignation since you turn in your resignation. Two things about this termination is that they sent the notification to the wrong e mail address and they were not; they were in fact talking to my younger sister and she notified me.

Many people speak ill of the people who work for the UOP and not all of them are bad people. The issue arises when your manager begins to signal you out, ride you for not getting your monthly quotas, tells you that you are not ateam player, etc. I was a Team Lead, I was a Sr Enrollment Advisor and I cannot tell you how many times I was told repeatedly that I needed to enroll 15 students each month if I wanted to be in a "meets" category. Employees are on a matrix and if they do not meet the matrix, then they are hammered until they either do meet the matrix, they quit, or they are fired. Enrollment Advisors are told that they are responsible to make sure that each student gets through the first seven weeks of class, then after that any issues the student has is no longer your responibility, it is Academics and Finance.

Right now the UOP is on an internal "witch hunt" for those employees they deem are not team players. They are and do record each and every call. They track each number dialed and email sent out. They offer no additional training to help you improve, other than teleconferences which many employees use as talk time instead. They will, do and have filed complaints against employees for compliance issues and they do not care if the economy is in dire straights, they want you to enroll as many students as you can. They care only about the quantity of the job, not the quality of the job.

For those of you who have taken GEN/ 101, GEN/300, or now taking GEN/200 this 3 credit class will not transfer, it is specifically designed for UOP. Also please be aware that NONE of your CORE will transfer either.

Please understand, this is information and knowledge that they do not wish to have any student know. They use tote boards, to see who has the most enrollments, who has the highest talk time, who has the highest retention and it is posted where everyone can see them. These tote boards have been deemed "illegal" by the Department of Education, yet they still use them.
Not only was I an employee, I was a student as well and the way they handled my finanial aid, (yes, they encourage employees to use financial aid) is a disaster.

Research, knowledge, and more research is all you need to make your own decision. I would not return to UOP as a student or an employee. The instructors are not certified teachers, that is why they are called facilitators. They are people who have a Masters Degree and has 2 years of current work history; these are the people who teach your ground and on line classes.
You are not being taught by a professional teacher, you are teaching yourself. As for plagarism, I know first hand that it happens. In one of my classes a class mate used a paper from one of the sites where you buy the papers, the team I was on caught it and the facilitator did nothing, just told us to cite the source. We got an A+ on the paper, a grade we did not legally earn.

For those who disagree with me, you are within your right, but ask your counselors about the quotas they have to make, ask your finance counselor why it takes 30-45 days to certify you for a loan when you sign your MPN; you already got the loan, ask them why your money is sitting in the account of UOP for 14 days (they earn the interest on it) then it is transferred to your student account for another 14 days (still earning the interest for UOP) and then for those who handle their own funds, it takes an additional 14 days to get to you (42) days sitting on the UOP account generating money for UOP, when in reality as soon as the money comes in and you are handling your own money, they are to release the funds to you immediately. Don't believe me, contact the Department of Educations Financial Aid department.

Do your research.

university of phoenix finance department scandal

AUTHOR: Bajungadustin - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 02, 2009

This is my expirence with UoP finance department- (i wont go into detail about how poorly constructed the classes are but let me just say that they suck really bad.)

I attended UoP for about 6 classes. everything was fine and dandy starting out. I was told my Financial aid was covering all but about 50 dollars for every 2 classes. 5 dollars that i would have to come up with out of pocket. so i was like no biggie and i started taking classes. then in late november i think it was i started recieving emails from my financial councelor telling me i needed to reapply for the Pell Grant. And at the tiem i really didnt need the money. i was getting the Gi Bill and Financial aid was covering almost everything else, so the pell grant was just some extra money that i wasnt too worried about at the time. I was a little lazy i guess in filing for it. but my financial councelor wouldnt have it. she emailed me 12 times over the pell grant. telling me, "you dont have to file it if you dont want to." "its free money that will go directly to you" "your passing up free money" "your financial aid is covering everyhting the pellgrant is all yours all you have to do is file" ect...

So finally she sends me a pretty crappy email telling me that she isnt going to worry about it if i am not going to worry about it. she isnt going to force me to file for free money if i dont want to. So im like fine... i'll file the d**n thing.

Then a little while later i get a check for about $2,200 in the mail. and after about 4 weeks or so its gone. then i get a phone call from UoP telling me that they made a mistake and they forgot to pull 1400 dollars out of my Pell Grant before they sent it to me.

Here is where the circuits in my brain started backfireing and rereading all those emails in my head. and i was like wait a minute, what exactly do you need 1400 dollars from my pell grant for? i recieved no answer other then an error and they forgot to take it out of my check before they sent it to me. So then i asked them why they were taking money out if the pell grant was optional and i was told i was paid up and it was all free money that was supposed to go to me.

I was told my financial aid was paying for everything. That i DIDNT have to file for the pell grant and that i was just missing out on free money.

So then i got to thinking, why were they so d**n hard up for me to file for the pell grant if i didnt need it to pay for anything. and if my invoice online said i was paid up in full what in the hell were they going to do with that 1,400 dollars? pocket it? So basically they will not tell me what the money was going to go for. They just simply said it was supposed to bee takin out of my grant.

Then they told me that i would not be able to continue to enroll in classes untill i paid them the 1,400 dollars. (wich i no longer had) and i told them that i didnt have it. after about 2 weeks when it came time to re-up for new classes they called me and said thaty would make me a deal. they would let me enroll in my next 2 classes as long as i agreed to pay then the 1,400 dollars over the next 9 weeks. and at this point i had done a little research. like the FBI investigation they had in 2004 among other things. So i told them No. DO NOT enroll me in any more classes. I am not paying you the money because my account is still paid up. not untill you can show you why you are taking money from me without telling me why. I told them i was no longer going to be attending their school and i would seek further education at a different establishment without such lucrative financial ways.

So what did they do? they enrolled me in 2 more classes anyway.  and now i have been out of school for 6 months and my student loan shows that they charged me 900 dollars for each of those 2 classes. They sent my account to collections saying that i owe them 1,400 dollars (still no reason listed) and i owe the bank almost 8000 dollars.. for 8 classes. 2 of wich i didnt even take. and if the classes are only about 600 dollars each you do the math. 560 i think it was per class (some kind of discount is listed on all my classes) 8 classes at 560 is 4480.00 + the 1400 they say i owe them = 5880... yet the student loan is listed at 8000?

Bottom line... This has got to be the shadiest school on the planet.

Do NOT get sucked into their quick start enrollment proceedures. If you call them they will get you started really quick and it will seam really cool for first time college students like i was. The thought of going to college for the first time made so easy by one simple phone call and some smooth talking enrollment guy who is gonna tell you exactly what you want to hear.

Loans: Something lacking

AUTHOR: Don - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, June 26, 2009

While I am not a student with UoP, I too have read many complaints regarding the loan enrollment practices of this institution. On the surface, it would appear that it is very difficult to enroll someone unwillingly in the financial aid program; however, the sheer number of complaints lends some credibility to these allegations.

As a college graduate with a BA in general studies and a MS in management from a flagship state university, I am familiar with the loan process. There are many steps to acquiring student loans, and it is almost impossible not to know that you are applying. Bearing this information in mind, UoP should acknowledge that there is, at least, a breakdown in the communication process. If many students are claiming they are "tricked" into signing, something is wrong.

As a manager, I would closely examine the process of disclosure to the student. All of these acqusations are damaging to the reputation of the school, and it is in their interest to correct this problem. While I hesitate to heap blame upon the university, each of these claims further increases the likelihood of some guilt. Instead of responding to reports filed on this website, administrative time would be better spent educating both staff and students. Although I cannot comment on the actual practices of UoP, I can claim with some certainty that this is not an issue with most state universities. To quote Henry David Thoreau: "Some circumstantial evidence is very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk."

University of Phoenix Lied - People Cried!!!

AUTHOR: Armed&dangerous - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 07, 2009

I agree with you that not all employees at uop are bad, and that all students could not have possibly overlooked - the fact they had to pay back a loan rather, what happened to the scholarship, the pal? But it has happened to soooo many people, like me and most of the people in my learning team. We would fill the lounge area waiting to speak to the two idots in the office who put on like they are so superior in their knowledge. It is not a learning institution it is a money making scheme formalized by calling it a university. As students we get "speed taught" we are the ones who have to do all the reading, then the instructor says "come on, just memorize enough to pass the test, so you can get your degree." No, uop is full of flaws. The norm is to recruit students from State offices where they can influence the legitimacy of the school's existance, is that not correct. I am a senior citizen, traumatic brain injured person, physically and mentally disadvantaged; I was discriminated against because of this and because I was homeless. I was taken advantage of big time. Now I am on a quest to locate attorneys willing to take on uop, or whatever name they are hiding behind from state to state. Ripoff people get me in contact with other people who share my disappointment with uop illegal practices.

Think Before You Speak

AUTHOR: Think Before You Speak - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 20, 2009

I detect bitterness and misinformation. To clarify everything you stated you gave a half of a whole story. That is wrong. Every organization has good and bad that it does. Perhaps in loosing a job there is time for self reflection. Stop to think of what you did and did not contribute and how you can grow. However, don't take anything from the many people employed that need a job or the many people that need to grow in their lives that come for a degree. I am happy with my job and education there. Take what you've learned and pay it forward at another employer. However, if you've learned nothing that in itself speaks volumes.

Not knowing you are getting loans...this is foolish

AUTHOR: Alumfacstaff - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 18, 2009

I am so tired of reading people claiming they were tricked into getting loans at UOP. As a current employee (over 6 years), faculty, and alumni. I have seen more letters, emails and complaints of students trying to say they were tricked into loans.

To get federal loans students must complete a FAFSA in which they can specify they only want grants. They need to complete UOP financial aid documents, again they have the option to select grants only. They need to complete a Master Promisory Note (MPN) with the lender of their choice on the lenders website. They need to elect to have the funds sent to them or be retained on account to be applied to tuition.

They have signed many documents linking to the student catalog detailing tuition costs, length of program, policies for dropping classes, failing, dropping out prior to completing disbursment responsibilities.

Students are sent letters by the 3rd party agency that certifies the funds. They are sent statements and documents by the lender.

Give me a break, students who claim they were tricked are just foolish for not reading documents. This is an online school, you don't have to sign, you don't have to attend, you do not have to respond to emails, phone calls or any other soliciating you receive. There is no one holding a gun to your head forcing you to complete the documents and attend class.

Yes, there are times when errors are made, humans afer all are involved. But in comparision with the number of students in attendance or graduated the error rate is pretty darn low! So take some responsiblity for your own actions and stop trying to place blame...I am so fed up with the entitlement attitude.

Oh and I know there are spelling and grammar errors in this post...no need to point them out. Stay focused on the topic at hand...

UOP Lies about not having Loans, which in fact one does

AUTHOR: Armywife65 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 18, 2009

Hi
My daughter was ripped by UOP and we are trying to get more people that were ripped off in the same way.

Her story is that, she is a single mom and thought she was getting a pell grant, to not have to pay anything what so ever for schooling, Her enrollment counselor says in the notes at UOP, that he walked her thru the loan process and told her how much the pmts would be, etct....BUT he never did, he told her she was not getting a loan that it was just formality for in case she wanted a loan. She would have never signed up with UOP if she had known she was getting a loan.

I specifically asked my daughter, if she was sure she was not getting a loan and she said yes, it's all free, because she's not working and she's a single mom.....well they screwed her and now they are saying that she owes $15,000.00 in student loans and that "she signed" which she was TOLD to sign, that it was all formality.

If we can get enough people, we will file a class action law suit. So if there is anyone that was told, they would not have to pay anything on a continuous basis from UOP, and now has to pay those loans, I'm hoping that someone can get a hold of me, So we can do something about this

Ditto--Ex employee

AUTHOR: Miraclelady - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 16, 2009

From my understanding we are not allowed to place any phone numbers or e mail addresses within the body of our responses.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. The unethical practices of UOP is reprehensible; not only did they send the email to the wrong address they sent another one saying that any time spent working will not be paid, as my mother notified the individual that they had the wrong email address.

I cannot lay the blame on the individual from HR as the person was following the policy of UOP. This individual is just doing her job, however, at the same time, she should have ceased all communication via email and called me to verify my email address, instead she continued contacting my mom; what kind of company violates FERPA by doing this? Since she was told that the email address she has does not belong to me and the only one on file for any FERPA release is my husband, she violated my privacy rights; I would like to help you, however, there is no way to contact you or find your website.

There is a court case pending in California that is set to go to trial next March if not settled before then.

With all the law suits that is either pending or has been adjucated against UOP another one will still not deter them from continuing their practices. Since they are the largest user of financial aid that is where the biggest concern is. If more students file complaints against the way UOP practices then perhaps they will begin to change.

DITTO

AUTHOR: Apollogroupclassactionlawsuits - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, May 15, 2009

I just wanted to DITTO everything about this report. I will actually write more on this subject. Matter of fact, I wrote a report on the University of Phoenix but Ripoff did not publish it for some reason.

Here is my report ( I will write another report synchronizing the two reports):

I am looking for people who want to share their experiences on the website, potential legal issues, and help suggest ideas to improve and build the website.

I am a former employee (Academic Counselor) and MBA graduate of the University of Phoenix. I have a formal charge against the university for age discrimination with the EEOC and Arizona Attorney General's Office. I decided to make this my life-time ambition to help organize other former employees and students who feel that they have been deceived, mistreated, abused, or discriminated against.

My belief is that very few of us have the capital or ability to generate the capital necessary to hire a reputable and competent law firm in pursuing legal action against this billion dollar company. Therefore, I am developing the website in order to build a coalition and a legal fund to take on Apollo Group, Inc. As the website develops and the fund grows, I envision using the funds to file or support litigation against the company. The EEOC is an option, but in the State of Arizona roughly 5,000 charges get filed with very few going to trial. In 2009, the number of charges are expected to increase significantly. Therefore, I came up with this idea as an alternative.

As an Online Academic Counselor, I witnessed the abuses by management to employee's and employees in regard to their students. Fortunately, I had the fortitude and confidence to quit even during this economic downturn. I could not stomach the unethical practices asked of me to perform on a regular basis. Whether you are a current or former student, instructor, or employee, please be assured that the website will keep your information anonymous and that our mission will be accomplished.

If you want to contribute any information on previous, current, or potential legal actions against the company to the website or potentially have your issue litigated, please feel free to contact me at the following email address: (((Redacted)))
Help me take a stand and make these WRONGS a RIGHT. Thank you.
