This seemed like a simple, single event, fixable with a speedy cash deposit to the bank. I made two cash deposits a day, following the one questionable overdraft. Each and every time I asked the teller for my balance-which includes "actual balance" and "available balance." Told my account was positive and of course all receipts in hand was happy to have quickly resolved the problem. A week later, $500 and GROWING out of my account and there is absolutely no way US Bank will refund the wrongful debits or admit fault. I spoke with a teller who was confused, then the Customer Service Aswsociate in the Branch, and the only way the numbers added up was on their computer. When my Statement arrived a few days later, I was thrilled to see that I was correct and my account had been in a POSITIVE Balance, with the exception of one single incident on one single day. I called Customer Service to resolve this mistake-of course, the Statement showed the facts. After the C.S. Agent lost patience he simply said " well, you can't REALLY trust your statement." Now, my receipts are all "untrustworthy, in bank receipts unreliable, online banking untrue, and statements useless"-according to US Bank-what system are they and we using? The charges I incurred were for inter-bank transfers, bank withdrawals (available balances rangeing from $300-$800) but somehow US Bank stole literally $100s of dollars.

Why this happens...

Easy answer to your question. The difference between your account and availible balance is check card transactions waiting to be claimed by the merchant. These transactions come off your availible balance immediately, but don't come off the account balance until the merchant shows proof of purchase to the bank. Banks must pay off the availible balance, not the account balance. So it is possible to have a negative availible balance and a positive account balance. My advice is to check your balance online; if there is a blue high-lighted balance on a particular day, click on the balance and it will show the figures that I'm talking about. Far be it for me to take up for the bank, but they're not wrong.

Debits before credits. So even though a deposit is made at the counter or online, it doesn't actually impact the balance until at the close of the day, after all of the debits are processed.

Most banks have been doing this for years, some have refined their own procedures. A few banks and most credit unions I believe do post credits before debits, so this kind of balance issue won't be an issue.

But if you are spending money the same day after a deposit, well, times have changed. Even the Federal Reserve agrees that cash doesn't have to be made available until first thing the next day, which would be midnight.
