I purchased a ZTE Unite Hotspot from U.S. Cellular (via CellularExpress in Maryville, TN) on May 24, 2013. I also have cellular service from U.S. Cellular.  Since purchasing the Hotspot, I have experienced unreliable service.  Webpages take several minutes to load, and some don't load at all.  An exclamation mark/message often appears over the internet connection informing me that internet service is not available.  My service is not much better than dial-up, yet I am being charged $50/month.  I have contacted U.S. Cellular 4 times in the past 2 months.  I called in early June, and the rep. informed me that 2 towers were down with no indication of how long until service would be restored.  After more problems, I called again on 6/24/13 and spoke with Steven at 1:46pm who informed me that 1 tower was down.  I also called today (7/30/13) and spoke with Cody, who transferred me to Earnest (I believe) in tech. support.  Earnest informed me that a new device could be sent for $35 or I could return my device to a local store and wait until it was repaired.  I asked to be switched back to customer service and was disconnected after a 1 hour and 21 min. phone call.  I attempted to call back, but I gave up after being on hold for 21 minutes.

As U.S. Cellular is not fulfilling their end of the contract in providing internet service via my Hotspot, I believe they should cancel my contract without charging me the cancellation fee.  I have contacted the BBB about this matter.  A rep. from US Cellular recommended me taking my device to a service center but basically implied that my contract would not be cancelled.

Easy Answer

Easy for someone who purchases infrastructure assets for a living:

US Cellular sold their Chicago (and Saint Louis) area customers and cellular spectrum to Sprint.

The transaction closed a couple months ago tops.

Ergo, US Cellular is no longer allowed to broadcast signal in Chicago or they would be in violation of the $480 Million contract they just signed.

Use your Google before the BBB.  Your chosen carrier no longer provides service in Chicago and your handset probably isn't capable of roaming on Sprint's technology.
