US Pet Recovery placed a coin operated candy box in our business. Paperwork was included with the box that states though www.uspetrecovery.com : "This program has been designed to provide and maintain a local database of animals for adoption, while assisting with the recovery efforts for lost and unwanted pets."

The www.uspetprotection website lists absolutley no lost or homeless pets, just a one page blue graphic of their logo. No money collected from the candy helps pets at their website.

News stories list the Pet Candy Box as a scam.

Owner's response

AUTHOR: Eric - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, January 29, 2018

It has recently come to our attention that there are some people with similar vending boxes nationally who are not using them for honest fundraising.  It has also come to our attention that there are some people in the area who are associating us with these people and are going around misrepresenting us and our efforts.  They are making claims that we are under investigation by the Nebraska Attorney General and what we are doing is a scam and that none of the money we collect goes to support finding lost pets or animal services in our area.

You deserve to know the truth from our perspective.  As I cannot speak for people in other cities and states, all I can do is to inform you of the truth of our efforts and can provide documentation upon request.  Apparently a business owner deemed our efforts as a scam because they did not know how to enter a website address.  If this person would have entered uspetrecovery.com/omaha they would have seen the website that I paid for to assist pet owners spread the message to help find their missing pet.  Unfourtunately they mistakenly entered uspetrecovery.com which is not a valid website as the person filing this complaint stated.  All could have been explained if they had the decency to call me and ask for clarification.  Instead this person (most likely) or someone inspired by this person have been placing fraudulent and misleading stickers on our boxes to tell people that this is a scam.

I have been in touch with Jake Brennan at the Nebraska Attorney General's office.  He said these stickers that these people are placing on our boxes does not represent their position.  We are cooperating with them to make sure our efforts are honest and in compliance with their standards.  We give a minimum of 10% of our funds to support local animal services to the point that we were invited to attend a banquet for the Nebraska Humane Society for out "generous" donations last year.  As we are able to offset our initial investment of acrylic boxes and website development for lost pets, our intent is to raise our donation level.

I felt that this was a good opportunity to teach my children some business principles as well as teach them the importance of giving to charity.  Unfortunately one business owner, who did not even extend the courtesy of calling me and who did not enter the proper website address we posted, had filed a false report about us and has been spreading lies to other business in the community.  It is disturbing to me what I see going on in other cities, but I can assure you that is not the case here.  The real loser in this are the local animal services that we were supporting.  I can only hope that this person has the courage and the courtesy to correct their wrongdoing and realize that in this case there is someone that is doing right with the money that is collected.  This person has caused my family financial and emotional hardship that has been underserved.  The way my kids were treated by some of these business owners, I wish not on your kids.  I am a forgiving person and I would really hate to see this person reap in their lives and business the things that they are sowing about me, my family and my efforts.

I believe in humanity and their ability to decifer between these two posts to see who is the real victim in this scenario.

Thanks,
Eric Madej
