The downtown Topeka, KS United States Post Office has lost two packages I mailed. Since the packages were not insured, there is nothing I can do. I cannot even get a refund for the postage even though the packages never arrived... on two separate occasions.
I mailed one package and filled it right in front of the middle-aged African American woman (I only mention this in case other packages have been lost by this same individual). She gave me an Express Envelope roughly 8x10 inches in size. I mailed a Taiwanese passport to a student who had left it at my home. Also included in the package were some bank statements and other papers. The package never arrived. Even when you send something Express Mail with USPS, it is NOT guaranteed to arrive. The insured mail is not guaranteed to arrive either. The only thing is... with insured mail, you can get some money refunded to you. With any other type of mail, you lose everything and they will not refund the postage you were out.
The second package I mailed was also given to the same individual at the Topeka main post office.

Thomas, You are wrong. This is not a posting by another company/competitor to USPS. This is a TRUE account from me... someone NOT affiliated with any shipping/mail company. They LOST an 8x10 red, white & blue Express Mail envelope and a big package sent at different times. When I asked why my packages disappear without a trace, I was told they would do nothing about it... they are not guaranteed to arrive... I could not get my postage/money back... and that "sometimes their trucks catch on fire." Isn't it funny that the USPS trucks carrying my BILLS never seem to catch fire?? I have never, in my 50 years, missed getting a BILL through the USPS! It is only my packages that disappear. Again, if you are not insuring packages, there is no guarantee they will arrive with USPS. They do not lose as many 'insured' packages as they do uninsured (I asked). And... I've never NOT had a package arrive through any other carrier... FedEx... UPS... and even carriers I used to mail documents to international locations! I'm sure, if one of those for-profit companies lost something, the LEAST they would do is refund my money! Not so with the good ole USPS. We don't even have the right to question them.
