On June 23, 2009, my wife took her '08 Escape to the Valvoline Instant Oil Change in Lee's Summit, Missouri. She handed the service person a coupon for a $10 off the regular $34.99 oil change. The tech asked what kind of oil she wanted she said she wanted the $24.99 oil change and the tech said OK and asked if she wanted the same oil as the car had from the factory. My told the tech that was fine as long as she got the $24.99 oil change. As the scam goes, they charged her a total of $56.95. She complained telling them it was more than double the coupon price. The tech retorted that she asked for the "factory" oil. In the end, all they would do is take $10 off and she walked out having paid $46.95 for what was supposed to have been a $24.99 oil change.

Now here is the real kicker. An '08 Escape takes 5W20 oil and it is clearly marked in large yellow letters on the filler cap. The receipt they gave my wife shows the "factory" oil these rip-off artists put in the car as 5W30. In no way is it the oil this car came with from the "factory." To tell the truth, God knows what they put in the car. If she hadn't gotten screwed into paying $46.95 for what should have been a $24.99 oil change, I'd have already changed it with Motorcraft 5W20 as it really came from the factory with.

Never again will I patronize this Valvoline store or any other. I can envision that every time a woman enters their stores dollar signs light up in their eyes.

Valvoline to make good

AUTHOR: Daniel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 20, 2009

Along with my posting here, I emailed a complaint to the corporate offices. Got a call this morning (7/20/09) from a customer service representative for Valvoline. They offered to refund $22 to make the price right and to send a certificate for a free oil change to evidently fix them putting in the wrong oil.

Although I don't like what took place at the store, the company is going to make it right. It is my thought that going straight to corporate is the way to handle it. If the problem is big enough, they'll eventually get enough complaints they'll either get rid of the problem or go under.

I don't mind giving the company a second chance but I'm undecided about returning to the same location.

In the end, I guess customer service isn't dead. Nicely done on the phone call and I'll patiently await the refund and certificate.
