It is important to start by saying I was not ripped off, no damage was done to me, but only by being aware, and researching the business before hand.

Went to the Tooele Vasa location last week and spoke with Ian. He told me I could opt out of the $39 rate guarantee fee, and the other two $25 fees. When I got down to signing he said I could not have a printed version of the contract (which is required by Utah state law). He also told me there was a six month contract, but that they could not call it a contract, so at that point I told him thank you and left.

After that visit I called the Orem corporate offices and spoke to a very nice lady, and she said they would print the forms off if I requested them, and I'd also receive an email version. I then emailed Ian and told him I was still interested in joining and would return later in the week, to early the following week. He informed me that there is no contract, but a $25 fee if I terminated with the Gym. There seems to be a large gap in the continuity of the message being given by the sales and management staff.

Today 11/18/16 I went back in for a second attempt at membership, and the young man today told me those fees were not optional. So again I walked out.

If any business tells you there is not a contract, but you have to pay and sign an agreement, that is in fact legally a contract.

Don't be deceived, and don't get trapped into signing something that you're not comfortable doing so. The complaints against Vasa and there several other previous company names far outweigh the good. So proceed with caution.
