....August 2011.

We took our beloved dog, Bear to this hack house for an overnight stay after a bone plating surgery.  She was stable but had taken a little longer than expected to come out of the anesthesia so we wanted her in a 24hr facility.

Upon our arrival she was taken to the triage area and seen by a Dr. Frank Fasanella.  Dr. Fasanella came back to speak to us after examining her and told us that her blood pressure was dangerously low and that her stomach is distended which can indicate that it had recently "turned" possibly during surgery.  Dr. Fasanella then immediately started talking about how much it would cost to treat her.  We interrupted him, with impatient concern, saying we didn't care about the money, what were our options?

Dr. Fasanella stated that if her stomach has turned it could have engaged her spleen or killed off some tissue which would eventually make her septic and kill her and he would need to do an Xray to find out.  So we told him to do the Xray.  Upon his return he stated that "it doesn't appear" that her stomach has turned but there was no way to know
without exploratory surgery. When we expressed our concerns that she was a nearly 15 year old dog and had just come out of another surgery quite weak, Dr. Fasanella assured us that he would not proceed with this exploratory surgery unless she was stable.

Dr. Fasanella continued to express that if we did NOT do the surgery and her stomach HAD indeed turned that she would die a painful death and there would be nothing they could do to save her at that point.  In short, Dr. Fasanella, coerced us into proceeding with an exploratory stomach surgery that we did not feel comfortable with.  Dr. Fasanella stated that the surgery would take place later that night and that we wouldn't be able to see her in the interim because they were going to de-gas her stomach and prep her for surgery but that we could come and see her now.  When we went to see her she looked happy and alert even though Dr. Fasanella had told us she was on her death bed.  Since we are not the experts, we could do nothing but trust this doctor's diagnosis and recommendation.

We left the hospital at this point to wait for the surgery and gave the nurses both our cell phone numbers to contact it the event anything should happen.  About 30 minutes later the surgeon that had done the bone plating surgery the previous day contact me to ask after Bear's recovery.  When I advised him of what was going on, he was surprised and shocked and asked for the number to the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care facility to consult with the physician and remarked that the diagnosis we were given "made no sense".  About 30 minutes later - we called the hospital back to say we had changed our minds and were informed she was already in surgery!  This was not more than an HOUR after our departure rather than "later that night" as Dr. Fasanella indicated.  We could do nothing but wait at this point.

Some time later I was contacted by a Dr. Mason who had performed the exploratory stomach surgery on Bear and he said her stomach had NOT turned after all and her tissues were all fine.  He said she "looked great and is recovering well, she looks even better than she did when you brought her in".  We were happy and relieved.  We stayed up all night excited and ready to pick her up in the morning. Around 6:30am - we received a call from Dr. Fasanella stating that Bear was in "bad shape" - that she had gone into cardiac arrest sometime around 3am.  When we asked why we weren't called he said they called a "home number" which is not a number we ever gave them.

When we arrived at the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care facility Dr. Fasanella told us that she did not come out of the exploratory surgery very well and they had a hard time keeping her blood presurre current all night.  When we said that Dr. Mason that had performed the surgery, told us she came out of the surgery extremely well Dr. Fasanella said that was not true - she came out of it quite poorly.  He further iterated that Bear had gone into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated once however she is now bleeding into her stomach and was in pain and discomfort and couldn't maintain her blood pressure and it would be best to "let her go".  We made the painful decision to have her put to sleep.

After consulting with other experts we are certain that this "exploratory stomach surgery" was an unnecessary procedure performed only to get money from us which then resulted in the condition which ultimately killed our dog.  She would not have been "bleeding into her abdomen" had they not done this unnecessary surgery.  Additionally, we were told the surgery would take place later that evening after she was "stabilized" and the surgery took place the minute we left the facility when our dog was still weak from her previous surgery.  VECC was negligent and did not take due care of our dog in their treatment of her which resulted in her death.

This place will kill you pet!  Save yourself the agony we have suffered.
