Incredibly shady and dishonest landlord. He put an ad on Craigslist advertising the room as $550 a month with all utilities included. Great. Good price, good location. Less than what I was paying at my old place. I tell my previous landlord I'm leaving, and she finds another roommate. I start to move my stuff in and he tells me the rent is $750. I have no choice at this point because my landlord has found someone. If the ad says the rent is $750, okay, I don’t bother with this place, and I look for another place.

The reason I wanted to move here is because his rent was advertised lower than what I was paying before, but that obviously wasn’t the case. People don’t rent rooms in houses because they want to live in a house over an apartment. They do it in order to save money. I’m paying more rent here than I was at the place I left so that I could SAVE money here.

He refuses to pay $40 for someone to plow his driveway when he's getting over $2000 a month in rent. A guy I used to rent from told me he had to pay $100 to get his driveway plowed, and he refuses to pay $40? I paid a lot less rent for a much bigger room at other places I’ve stayed at. I paid $450 for a room with all utilities included that was a lot bigger than the room I have right now. This house is always freezing. How is someone able to charge $450 with all utilities without a freezing house?

He has no sense of reality either. He asks roommates not to be here when his kids are over or he's got visitors. When someone rents a place, they are expected to have access to that place 7 days a week, and sleep there every night. It’s not my problem to be making alternate arrangements. When I rent a place, I expect to be able to be there every day. It’s not my responsibility to have other people I can stay with. If you really don’t want someone sleeping here when you have people over, you pay for their hotel.

He thinks his tenants are going to maintain his property for him? We pay YOU to live in YOUR house. We don’t pay YOU to maintain YOUR house. Where is the disconnect? I highly doubt he would pay someone to maintain their property. It is not my job to cut your grass, rake your leaves or shovel your deck. If you want to cut some rent, a deal can be worked out, but otherwise, no one is doing it for free. Likes to tell his tennants what previous roommates did. If he loved their free labor so much, why aren’t they still living here?

Avoid at all costs. Do not rent from him. This is the only way he can rent to people. He lures them in with a low price on his Craigslist ads, then when you have no choice, tells you the rent is more, and then wants to increase it every month.
