A few years ago, when I first moved into my home, a door to door man came with his "deal" for a free home alarm system.  All I had to do was advertise for them by putting a sign up in my front lawn.  I was aware that it was not going to literally be free, that I was to pay a monthly fee, but no installation or activation fee.  This man was from APX Alarm.  I decided to try it out.

In the beginning there were a lot of false alarms. It was a pain. After some time I figured out that my DOGS are a much better security system than this will ever be.  It would be very easy to get past APX system.  There are much more advanced alarms out there these days, and I feel I am paying for something that does nothing.

I called about getting out of the contract over a year ago, and they told me that I would have to pay out the remainder of my contract in full.  at that time it was over 1,500.00  I did not have that kind of money.  I have a student loan, and a house full of people to care for, so I just allowed the monthly payments to continue, because it is a lot more affordable than the full price.  In this phone call I was told that when I do decide to cancel service that I need to submit it in writing, because otherwise at the end of the contract, it will automatically renew for another year.

I called them again 2 nights ago, when my daughter was playing roughly in the hall, and accidentally banged into the ac adapter bending the plug badly.  I told them I was afraid it would be a fire hazard, and when could someone take it out, and how much would I owe to pay off the contract.  I was told I still owe about 700.00, and that I would have to pay it BEFORE they come to disconnect it.  Fat chance, I don't have 700.00 to do that, I still have a vehicle that requires 1,000.00 of work!  I told him That I didn't want to pay that, and end up sitting around for a month waiting for someone to take it out.  He transferred me to tech support.

The man in tech support was very helpful, and walked me through how to get the unit safely out so I would not have a fire.  I finally have that stupid thing out, but I am still paying until July 2012, because I can't afford all the money at once to "cancel" service.

Just to let everyone know, APX alarm has changed their name, and are now known as VIVINT

Time to READ your contract.

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 05, 2011

By May of 2012, you need to actually read your contract.  Mine has a time window for cancellation..."No less than 30 days before end of intial service or also no less than 30 days before each renewal period", or the contract automatically renews for a year.

Unless you like surprises more than most of us...read carefully. :)

I don't need financial advice.

AUTHOR: Dawn - (USA)

frankly you know nothing about me sir, I own my own home outright.  It is paid off.  I have no mortgage payments.  What I have is a lot of bad luck, and people that take advantage of my kindness.  My student loan came later, but before financial problems arose.  I had a whole extra family staying with me that were supposed to pay rent, and contribute to food, and never did.  They stayed for a year.  I had my father in my home, and it turned out to be the same situation.  then I had 4 appliances break in a row (one was a dryer fire) for which the insurance only paid part of the loss (depreciation)  I am normally very responsible, and plan for emergencies, but that doesn't matter when so many things go wrong at one time.  There were also numerous hospital visits during this time.  I truly do feel this company takes advantage, and this is why I wrote the report.

Have a plan

AUTHOR: John - (United States of America)

I just would like to offer some constructive criticism.  As far as the money problem goes, you should have a more strict budget in place.  You knew that you had a school loan so you should have planned for that in the future.  The car problems were something I am pretty sure I can assume was unforeseen.  However, you should have at least 6 months worth of bills in your savings account for the emergencies.  You entered into a legally binding contract with a home security company and they have every right to charge you what you owe them.  In other words, look before you leap especially is you are going to criticize a company for your lack of judgement.

their outs are not moral

AUTHOR: Dawn - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, February 03, 2011

I was also told that I could have someone I know take over the remainder of my contract in order to get out. I would not do such a thing knowing that this device does not do what it should do. I feel that would be morally wrong. So in order to have the moral high ground I am continuing to pay, and am waiting for any sign of class actions. There are a lot of people out there angry at this company. I know some other people on my block got this thing the same week I did, I think I will talk to them and see how they feel about this company.

they did hand me the lines about possibly not being in the area the next day etc, when going door to door in order to influence my decision to get the system right away, and of course they were still there.
