I found a car online at Southtowne so my son and I decided to go down there. When we arrived a salesman approached us. I told him they had a car I was interested in. He took me into his office and I told him which one it was. He came back with a sticker price of $19,999 and said he could take off $1,000. since I already owned a VW. And that he would take off $4500. for my trade in. Bringing the car down to $14,499. Saying what a great deal that was.  I explained that the car was listed online for $14,000. so why would I give him my trade in for nothing and pay $500 more than what they even had the vehicle listed for.

That should have been my first clue that they were scandalous. He then asked me what it would take to get me into the car. I told him the price I was willing to pay and how much my payments needed to be. They wrote it all down on a piece of paper and we agreed on everything. I agreed to pay $14,000. for the vehicle with them giving me $2,000. for my trade in. So the total price of the car we agreed on was $12,000. that included tax and licensing and a warranty. However when they went to draw up the papers the vehicle was going to be purchased under my ex husbands name and he wasn't present to sign the papers.

They told me that wasn't a problem that I could take the car home for the night and that me and my ex could come down the next day and sign the papers. They printed up some papers and asked me to just sign them for the purpose of taking the car home for the night. After looking at the papers they wanted me to sign I noticed there were discrepences. They had the price of the vehicle $17,805.99 and the interest rate at 20%. I explained that wasn't what we had agreed to.

They assured me that the papers I was signing weren't the actual legal papers and not to worry about the information on it cuz it was just so that I could take it for the night and they would reprint it the next day when we came down to sign the real ones. Since the car wasn't even going to be in my name and I because they assured me they would be giving me the real papers the next day I went ahead and signed it. The next day when my ex husband and I went down to sign the documents there was a different guy that was handling the paperwork.

But when he handed my ex husband the papers we noticed they still had the wrong price on it. The only thing they had changed was the interest rate. And that was because my ex husband has really good credit. I explained what I had been told the day before, only to be told that no that wasn't the case. I told the gentleman then never mind I don't want the car. He told me pretty much to bad because I had already purchased it. I explained that we had agreed on $12,000. for the car and there was no way I could of would pay $17,805. for the car. That was almost a $6,000. difference plus they were charging me $1,999 for the warranty which was supposed to be added in at no additional charge.

I explained I am on social security and disabled and that I am on a limited income. He proceeded to tell me there was nothing that he could do. That I had purchased the car for that amount and that was final!! I had just recently suffered a heart attack and I was in no condition to sit and argue with the gentleman. Also they had my car in the back washing it for me and when they brought it out to me it had damage on the front bumper. It looked like someone had wrecked it. When I brought this to their attention they assured me that it had been like that when I had purchased it!! I am completely sick about this whole situation and don't know what to do.

Happy motoring

You made several mistakes:

1) You agreed to purchase a vehicle without first test-driving it. This is a sign of an inexperienced buyer and therefore sets you up to get swindled.

2) You paid the advertised price for a vehicle. You can always negotiate a lower price. This is another sign of an inexperienced buyer.

3) You accepted $2000 for your trade-in after they offered you $4500 for it.

4) You posted your name, address and telephone number on a public web site.

5) You signed a contract for an amount that does not match your verbal agreement.

Unfortunately you were deceived and are unable to prove it. Better luck next time. Enjoy your new VW.

There's NOTHING You Can Do Now!

AUTHOR: Jim - (USA)

Why on earth would you even remotely consider signing papers for a car if the price wasn't what you agreeed to in the first place? Then this gem...the salesman allegedly told you the CONTRACT you signed wasn't a legal contract. Did it ever occur to you if it was not a legal contract, why did you need to ATTACH YOUR SIGNATURE? Did they defraud you? It sure looks that way but you went along with it by agreeing to the price AS PER THE SIGNED CONTRACT. I do give you MUCH CREDIT for actually reading what you signed. This website is filled with whiners who sign contracts they haven't a clue what they are obligating themselves to. They have a signed contract which says you agreed to the terms and conditions. What they told you verbally is meaningless.
