Recently, my husband's Volvo XC70 began leaking water. We took it to Overland Park Volvo for a diagnostic check. They state the windshield seal has broken and that is why it is leaking water. It is a factory installed windshield. They stated it is not covered under warranty and that a glass repair company would need to fix it. So, we took if to Safelite.

Although out insurance is covering replacing the windshield, because they cannot simply reseal it, Safelite states they do not understand why Volvo didn't cover it under their warranty due to defective installation. In addition, the service advisor at the Volvo dealership advised us and Safelite that the seals routinely break on Volvos and cause water to leak in the vehicle. There is no reason why the seal should not last the lifetime of the windshield or lifespan of the vehicle, because there are products on the market that guarantee this will not happen. While we are fortunate to have a $0 glass deductible, other Volvo customers that do not have this deductible will have to pay out-of-pocket to repair Volvo's defective workmanship. In addition, water leaking into a vehicle can cause all types of corrosive damage. In our vehicle alone, the water leaked all over the floorboard, all over the leather seats, all of the gear shifting mechanism, etc. If the water were to go into the gear shifting mechanism, it could cost thousands of dollars in damages. Same goes for components that are located under the floor board.

I filed a complaint with the BBB, the FTC, and the New Jersey Attorney General. If you have experienced the same problem, I would suggest filing your own complaints.

Since the original complaint, we received the response from Volvo directed through the Attorney General of Kansas.

Volvo claims they had no way of knowing if the windshield was factory installed because it was purchased as a certified pre-owned vehicle. This directly contradicts the dealership's statement and Safelite’s statement that the windshield in question was factory installed. So obviously there is a way to detect when the windshield is inspected, which clearly is verifiable. In addition, Volvo claims they were never contacted prior to the repair with Safelite, claiming this did not give them the “opportunity to gather facts and to participate in the repair as a goodwill gesture.” Obviously, the dealership has a service record showing the vehicle’s service history. It is clearly documented that the vehicle was taken to the dealership on 03/18/2017. The service advisers can verify we were told the windshield was factory installed, but that Volvo would still not cover the windshield because they consider it outside of their warranty. The service department acts as Volvo’s agent and is responsible for contacting the company about repairs, which apparently was never done by the dealership or we or just getting the run around by Volvo. Finally, the receptionist and the store manager at Safelite can verify the windshield was factory installed. And the receptionist can verify that she was also told Volvo does not cover defective windshields, even if installed by Volvo, and that the seal on Volvo windshields routinely break due to defective workmanship. The other service advisors should be able to verify this statement as well.

Obviously, Volvo needs to properly communicate with their dealerships that they will cover windshields as a goodwill gesture if it is factory installed and defective. So if you have a similar problem, make sure to get everything properly documented and file your own complaint with your state attorney general, the BBB, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. My complaint is on record with Kansas, so your state attorney general could always contact Kansas and could obtain information on my complaint if needed. Because the service advisers and Safelite communicated to us that this type of problem routinely happens on Volvos, Volvo and Volvo dealerships clearly have a responsibility for damages.
