Wachovia bundled NSF fees to wipe out our bank account and then piled more on as they selectively held and released trasactions.

There were no pending items to clear at the time they hit us with $420 worth of NSF charges. They then posted the ones we had already been charged for. We then got our automatic deposit entered at midnight and they racked up an additional $350 in charges.

Please clarify...

Something isn't adding up.

First you claim that Wachovia selectively held and released transactions. Then you say that there were no pending transactions when you were charged $420 in fees. There must have been transactions being processed in order to activae those fees.

So...what happened exactly?

Banks Don't bundle NSF fees

Banks process debit card transactions as they are approved by the merchant from whom you purchased goods from. The problem however is that the approvals for debits can often come in big chunks at the same time. Unless you keep a WRITTEN register of your debit transactions (yes, it's required), you're going to get sacked by NSF fees because you really don't know where you stand in your account - and checking online will only mislead you. If they bundled transactions in the way you suggest, it would mean merchants wouldn't be getting their money timely, and no merchant would ever accept debit cards if that were the case.

Your solution would be to stop using your debit card or start writing down every transaction in a register when you use your debit card. When you use a debit card in the manner you are using it, the debit card stops becoming free. Obtain a regular credit card and pay the entire balance each month.

Best of luck to you.
