I bought a computer from walmart and went to register it with compaq. I was told that my same computer was already registered to someone else EXAMPLE serial number. I contacted wal-mart headquarters 1800 walmart and was told i would be recieving a 300 dollar giftcard for the value of my computer. WRONG
I recieved 150 dollars after complaining to them for days on end because there is an open box law they did not tell me my computer had been sold to someone else and returned ......dont buy computers from walmart because you will end up with a broken returned one!

If you have any notes, emails or other documentation from Compaq, then you're ready for action. If not, I would contact Compaq and get written confirmation from them that the computer was previously sold, and registered with COMPAQ by the previous OWNER of the computer for warranty protection.
THEN, file in small claims court for the full price you paid for the machine.
You shouldn't have any trouble winning a small claims suit.
ALSO, I would file formal, written (don't use the internet) complaints with your state AG office, and state dept of consumer affairs against Walmart for violating many "truth in advertising" and merchant laws. I know of no US jurisdiction were it is legal for a merchant to sell something as NEW when it in fact is USED.
The UCC does not allow this. You need to research your state laws to learn how your state has implemented the UCC.
Good luck.

I did contact compaq. They changed the information on file , but did that help with paying for the computer that broke 3 weeks later ...no
Walmart refused to take it back due to missing parts. those parts were not in the box when i recieved it ... I never got my money or a new computer. the only thing i got were useless promises from walmart to make it right. 4 years later i still havent heard a word and i still hear of this happening.
I am not paying compaq to fix a computer i bought that "laura stephenson" bought and broke.
They did a real good job making it look as if the box had never been opened!

""Even though it may be too late, you need(ed) to call Compaq and tell them your situation. They will (would have been) be happy to help you with the situation and change the serial number to be registered in your name.""
What utter tripe. The only thing the customer has to do is RETURN the USED (previously warranty registration - remember?) computer to Wal-mart for a complete refund or for an exchange for a NEW computer.
It is illegal to sell product as NEW when in fact it is used. It is not the reponsibility of the customer to verify that the computer has not been previously registered with the manufacturer - that's the responsibility of Wal-mart if Wal-mart wishes to put it back on the shelf and sell it as NEW. If Wal-mart chooses to NOT contact a computer manufacturer and verify that a previously sold computer has not been registered, then that is a risk (of the item being returned again) Wal-mart chooses to take.
I suggest the employee check the uniform commercial code and various state laws regarding USED vs. NEW. Once a computer (or any electronic product) has been registered with the manufacturer, as for warranty protection, the ITEM CANNOT be resold as NEW.
The OP of this report should have returned the computer for a full refund or exchange for a truly NEW machine. If Wal-mart would have refused to grant the refund or exchange, then small claims court is a viable remedy as well as filing complaints with the FTC, state, and local agencies.

I'm a Customer Service Rep at the Walmart in Oakland, MD, and obviously your CSR thought that your computer had no problems... Our policy if that if it has no problems, we send it back to the shelves. (Reasons such as customer was unhappy with purchase, wasn't the right type, etc.) Even though it may be too late, you need(ed) to call Compaq and tell them your situation. They will (would have been) be happy to help you with the situation and change the serial number to be registered in your name.
