The kiosk doesn't directly send a signal straight to the photo machine for any kind of gift items, if that was so then the machine would be printing out t-shirts or mugs, which would be kind of strange. Though, not that strange because 3D printers have now been invented.

Back to the point, I'm pretty sure the clerks behind the photo counter couldn't tell you about the company who deals with photo restorations for that companies own protection, they are an outside vendor who is only contracted to help Walgreens help you with your photo restoration.

When your item is scanned on the kiosk and the order is completed, a week or two later it gets sent to the photo machine as an internet order, this is so we can keep your original photo safe and not send it away. You can tell this when you look at the label on your envelope after it gets back, it should tell you it was an internet order instead of a one hour one. They can't fake those labels.

The Walgreens photo lab I got my restorations at were incredibly impressive, I was pleased that it came with a CD showing me a before and after of my scanned image. The photo I needed restored had all the scratches removed and burn marks that was over my relatives nose had been removed and had been completely reconstructed. I was totally amazed.

I was lucky though because my original photo was the same size as the one that I needed to be reconstructed so there was no fuzzyness to the new photo.

I was really weary at first of this service too, so I did a lot of research about it online first, I have a shoe box of other photos that need to be restored, and am very happy for those 50% coupon deals that come in every once in awhile, especially on Memorial Day and Veterans day. 
My friends love the restored photos I have hanging in my hallway, it makes for great conversation when I have visitors around.

Sometimes when I pick up my restorations, I glance at the the other customers restoration and notice that they had used a wallet sized photo to be restored, the poor picture ended up horribly fuzzy, scratches had been removed though, but there wasn't anything else to be done to a picture so small, one day they will find a way to be accommodating to customers with tiny tiny pictures I hope.
