My daughter recieved a $Walmart Visa Money Card with $100 on it for her 3 yr old Christmas present from her grandparents. We put this away and were planning on using it closer to summer when she was a little older and when she would appreciate getting a gift a bit more..  That said we forgot about it until the following Christmas when we were going through Christmas cards, addresses etc..

We went to Walmart to use the card and found out it had expired in November. We asked how we could get a new card since they had taken the money and we hadn't gotten anything in return. We were told to call the number on the card, which we did.. HOWEVER you can not speak with anyone unless you have a valid card.

We ended up speaking with a Walmart manager who told us once the card expires the money is gone and nothing could be done!

THIS IS THEFT!!!!! $100 was spent on the card, it was not used. Walmart just decited to confinsate the money, because we didn't use it right away! What difference does it make how long it takes us to use the money. They were given the money upfront which they put into there bank account and collected interest on...

Incorrect Information!

AUTHOR: jlherveyross - ()

There are no fees for any purchase. The only fees are the monthly fee if you haven't added $1,000 to it, and it's only $3. The ATM charge is $2, with a max withdrawl of $400 (like most banks). So, by your saying that they charge a fee per purchase, you're giving out inaccurate information. I have one of these cards, and I have several other prepaid debit cards. This card not only is one of the best I have ever used, but it also has the lowest fees compared to others. I don't believe this specific card is the one you're referring to. Other cards by or even netspend do charge anything from $1 or $2 per purchase. The Wal-Mart Money card does not have these charges.

Green Dot Corporation Response

AUTHOR: Green Dot Corporation - (USA)

We truly apologize for your experience. Green Dot Corporation manages the Walmart MoneyCard. Walmart moneyCard is a reloadable prepaid Visa card, not a gift card. Due to some of the features associated with the card, like the ability to withdraw cash and set up direct deposit, Federal law requires us to obtain, verify and record your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number when you register a Walmart MoneyCard. After we verify your information, we will send you a personalized card with your name on it. The monthly service fee of $3.00 will be applied 10 after registration or 90 days after the date of purchase. We do our best to clearly state this on our website and packaging. We want to be able to help you get the funds that were on the card since it has expired and you were not able to use it. Please send an email with your name, phone number and a brief description of your issue to We will review and respond to you directly.

I agree though

AUTHOR: MochaG - (United States of America)

I believe it is the card affiliated with Visa, so you can use it as a debit card with Visa. Sometimes, you would see that It affiliates with Amex as well. I got one or two for my birthday. The problem with the card not only has an expiration date, but also charges a fee when buying plus deducts monthly fee after the first use. The charge for the buy could start from $3.95 up to $5.95 depending on their policy.

To me it is a rip off because it is somewhat a debit card (with real cash in it) and it should not be expired. If anyone ever think about buying this card for a gift card, DO NOT because the recipient loses the value of real cash. Buy a real GIFT CARD instead!

I'm looking at the card
On the top left it says Walmart
On the bottom left it says Valued Customer
On the bottom right it says Debit and under that it says Visa

Is there a number I which I can get through to speak with someone if you are willing to work on resolving this issue? The customer service number listed on the card will not let me talk to anyone because I have to have a valid card number. It tells me to call back later when I have a valid number. The number is invalid because the card expired.

Further clarification if you would...

AUTHOR: Striderq - (U.S.A.)

What exactly was printed on the card? Was it labeled a gift card or was it a MoneyCard? If it was a money card it's governed by the following Card Holder Agreement:

This agreement does indeed include a 43 monthly service fee with the first charged 10 days after card is purchased. However, this card also has to be activated before being used. When purchased it's a temporary card that is activated by phone or internet and a permanent card issued. From the agreement:19. Termination; Suspension; Expiration. Your Card will expire on the expiration date on the Card. We may reissue the Card when it expires, for no additional fee, and will generally send you a replacement Card if you have a balance remaining on the expired Card we will transfer the funds from the expired Card to your replacement Card and the funds will be available on your replacement Card after activation. At any time, we may suspend your Card and your ability to use your Card, for any reason allowed by law, such as if we suspect possible fraud or suspicious activity, if you have breached your responsibilities under this Agreement, or for security reasons. We also may terminate your Card and your use of the Card at any time and for any reason. Upon suspension, termination or expiration, we may stop accepting reloads to the Card and/or transactions with the Card. If we terminate your Card or it expires and we do not provide a substitute or replacement Card, we will return to you any funds remaining on the Card unless we are prohibited by law from doing so. You remain responsible for any use of your Card even after the Card is terminated or expires. To the extent permitted by law, you agree to pay attorneys fees and collection costs we incur in collecting amounts you owe us and enforcing our rights under this Agreement." So it sounds like what happened was the grandparents purchased a moneycard (temporary) which is good for 1 year. Since it was never activated to initiate the issuance of the personalized card it expired causing the funds on it to be held.

Talk to the grandparents to see if they still have the receipt. it'll have information that should enable them to get a new card with the $100 (minus $3 monthly service fee) on it. My further suggestion is to make sure gift cards are purchased in the future so you don't have to worry about the activation. Hope this helps you out.

You must be mistaken!

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

You must be talking about something different..

As I had mentioned we had recieved it as a Christmas present so we got it at Christmas time.
We went to use it 12 months later and were told it's was expired.

These cards are available at the counter of every Walmart in the country.
They are Visa Gift Cards so they can be used anywhere that excepts Visa.
They are not rechargable!
Many people purchase these cards as gift cards so that the reciever is not limited to a specific store to purchase from.

There is no mention of a $3 per month service charge anywhere on the card. There is also no mention of a $3 per month service charge anywhere on there website.

The manager of the Walmart store showed me that it states on there website the card expires 12 months after purchase and once expired it is not renewable for any reason!

That's theft!

Even if what you say was true with a $3 per month service charge, There still would have been $64 on the account after 12 months.. This card came up expired.

Something seems to be missing from your report.  From what you have said the card expired 11 months after you got it.   The Walmart "Money" card is a card for people who don't have bank accounts and want to use it more like a debit card.  It is NOT a gift card, and it also has a $3/mo fee.  So with $100 it would take just short of 3 years(33 months) to go through the balance off the card.

Perhaps your parents need to make sure the type of card they are getting.  Most Pre-Paid Debit Cards(one's with a VISA/MC logo) will have some sort off monthly fee.
