Walmart only hires idiots as cashiers! The only job requirement is to breathe! For this time I decided to pay for my items in cash, expecting to save some time at the check out, but boy was I wrong.

My total came out to 35.50, I gave the cashier 40.50, wanting a FIVE DOLLAR BILL back, but that didn't happen. The cashier obviously didn't look at the amount I gave and keyed in the exact amount.
I explained what had happened and she then proceeded to count on her fingers as to determine how much cash to give back me.
Granted, I am not a mathematician but was happened to the concept of knowing basic math?
As you can see in my situation, we are not talking trigometry.
If I offended any cashiers who read this, you are the exception to the Walmart staff, you have the ability to read but my question to you, can you subtract?
If any else out there who HATES stupid people, please repond!!!!!

This is a ripoff?

AUTHOR: Whycustomersaredumb - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 21, 2009

This isn't a ripoff, personally I'd blame the school that push every idiot through. Maybe you should have said something to help. Not everyone is good at math and besides customers are way worse.

"Your totals $64.23," sweet smiley cashier
Customer hands the cashier a $50 while still screaming at her boyfriend over the phone when rolling eyes puts her hand out for her change.

I don't know how many dumb people can't even understand a receipt.

#111 Consumer Suggestion

Common Sense is not that Common

AUTHOR: Wild Child - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 31, 2008

I wouldn't be the first to call this person stupid, I do the same thing, pay in cash, assuming that i will get the change that i want, how i want it, ie. 43.25 for a bill of 38.25 knowing i should get back a $5.00 as well, and it always seems to confuse the cashier, since most people don't do it !!!

I work to help out a freind at his personal store every once in a while, yet i don't need to key in the exact amount given to me in order to figure out the change, and he doesn't understand how I can.

Then again, my sister who holds 2 degrees, yet can't do math in her head.

But i would sujest you look at yourself first, maybe that cashier can rebuild an engine, cook like a chef from nothing but left overs, or might discover a cure for cancer. Clearly she isn't Rain Man, but it doesn't make her stupid.

So i ask, what if a simple patent clerk, who failed basic math in school, had never developed the theory of relativity? Or people who never knew about the wheel, had not built the pyramids? History is full of examples.

Well guess what, that cashier is smarter than you, for one reason, i didn't see her judging you when you walked out the door. Better to be thought a fool, then speak and remove all doubt.

And don't be upset with me for this response, you wanted to hear from "Any else out there", by the way what happened to basic grammer, it's "Anyone else out there". Practice this, Welcome to Warmart, how can I help you? I'm sure that girl will be your manager one day, if your "Better than You" attitude doesn't blow the interview.

So that's my 2 cents worth, even though it's only a penny for your thoughts. I don't think good old Albert every figured that one out.

Give them a break...

AUTHOR: Chad - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 24, 2008

I work as a Manager in a fast food establishment. I am also proud to be a Wal-Mart Customer. I can say that I have never had a problem with a cashier there. I am always courteous, and am always treated well. If the cashier had a problem figuring out my change, I'd help them out. Some people do have problems with math, spellng ect. It doesn't mean they are stupid, or that they didn't get a good education. It means that they have a problem in that area and may need some help. I know cause i have an employee who is not good at math. I help her, and don't ridicule her in anyway. Courtesy works both ways.

Karen, Who Do You Think you Are, and What's So Great About YOU???

AUTHOR: Lynda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 07, 2008

I am a former cashier for Wal-Mart, Melbourne, Florida. I took the job as a part-time job to supplement what is a pretty decent job; I just needed some extra cash flow for awhile.

I found Wal-Mart to be a very compassionate company who gives a shot to people that might not be hired elsewhere. They give the same oppotunity to more talented people.

I still have the higher-paid job, and--trust me--it's not a job that "just anybody" can do. I am grateful that God gave me enough brains to qualify for this job, but at the same time, I do not "look down my nose at" people that have applied for it and not qualified. (YOU, PERHAPS??? Because I work for a huge company, and we are all over the place.)

To work at Wal-Mart, there are certain tests that must be passed to work in any given job. The cashier you dealt with may have been at the end of an 8-hour shift after working someplace else for five or six hours. She may have had low blood sugar. She may even--horror of horrors!--been not quite as swift as you feel yourself to be. IT DOESN'T MATTER.

She did her job to the best of her ability at that moment. She gave you the right change. Whether she had the capability of doing it in her head at that particular moment, or used her fingers, or counted the moles on your face, DOES NOT MATTER.

I feel very, very sorry for you that you used this legitimate venue to gripe about something so incredibly petty; something that is a non-issue.

Yes, Karen, I can add, subtract, multiply, and rightly divide the Word of God. And when I subtract your negatives from your postives, you seem to be in the minus. Not that I want to judge, or anything!

About Walmart Associates/cashier's

AUTHOR: Ladyloveseagles - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 25, 2008

I use to be a cashier at walmart and when I first started. It was very scary.
But I had a good experienced cashier to teach me too.
I was there for 6 months. Then I went to be a CSM. While being a CSM I knew who the experienced cashier's were and they were the ones I would send the trainees too.
Now as a cashier yes there were and still are times when it gets busy and as a CSM I would be on break. I cared about the cashier's. I would call up to the other CSM to make sure that the cashier's got there break. That was my job.
now some of the cashier's that we had were haddicapped. Some were slow.
But I would make sure that they knew what they were doing before I would let them go on there own.
It is not the cashier's fault or the CSM's fault. They take there orders from the Stor management. The store Management are the ones that get the labor down. They stay under the budget so that no matter if the associates get a bounce. The store managers do.
As a CSM I have heard number of times. Thank god we are under budget, I can get my Bendz that is on order.
See the store managers only care about them getting there bounces. Because if they did not stay under budget. They would be in trouble with the home office.
how do you think most of these stores that become store of the year make it?

Please give the assocaites a break they are NOT stupid.

These are young people probably working there first job and scared.

What Walmart really needs are REAL managers that care.

Hard to find when the only concern is MONEY not people.

So in the long run the associates get hire, and the customers do too.

Only Human

AUTHOR: Mcself - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 22, 2008

I am glad to say I can subtact. We are only human just like anyone else. When you work with money all day, it gets quite stressful. Exspecially in customer service when there is more money to be worked with. We are human like anyone else, and do make mistakes too.

If this ever happens again, it could be solved by a CSM, customer service manager, or a Salary member of managment was called. They can close the regester for a few minutes to perform a "spot check" or other wise a audit on the till. The cash drawer total would have shown that the till was over be the amount stated. As a customer, it has happened to me a couple of times, but luckly I knew what to do. I hope I solved any future problems.

This Whole Report Is Funny Because...

AUTHOR: Kristen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 30, 2008

almost all the posts I have read display how idiotic and stupid people really are.
I haven't even read 6 posts in this report, and I have seen at least 10-15 2nd grade spelling and grammatical errors.

It's so funny to me how a report that was started to note how "stupid" another group of people are, looks like an elementary Language Arts teacher's nightmare all the way through.

There is a Wal-Mart within walking distance from me, (for the non-lazy), that is horrendous. Not only is there the "only 5 open lanes out of 20 available" issue, but even the patrons are not people who should really be allowed to spend more than one hour each day outside of their home. In addition, the cashiers could be more professional.

Understanding that I cannot change certain facets of life, I either patronize the independent grocery store that's about 7 minutes away or the other Wal-Mart that has better customer service and is more feasible with my lifestyle and preferences that is about a 15 minute drive away.

It's that simple. When I visit a site called ripoffreport.com, I expect to see valid complaints against companies that are disregarding legal or ethical standards. This report merely complains about life and it just so happens that it caused several others to take the bait.

This isn't meant to insult the original poster nor those that agree with the original poster, but this seems to be the product of someone who doesn't understand that life is full of people you don't want to deal with but have to; place you don't want to go but have to; and experiences you don't want to have but must. Therefore, you either suck it up, barricade yourself in your home, or willfully cease to exist.

My my! Just today I had a 'Walmart' experience.........

AUTHOR: Adolph - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, August 27, 2008

The wife of a friend called me for assistance when her car wouldn't start. I soon determined the Walmart battery, 25 months old, had failed. Entering the automotive department, I handed an employee (identified as "assistant manager") the ORIGINAL 2006 battery purchase slip. His first question:"When did you buy the battery"? I then informed him he had that information in his right hand. With help from another staff member, he then found the date on the slip I had given him.
.
Battery tested, determined faulty. New battery installed. The SAME assistant manager's next question: "What battery did we just put in. Is it the same as came out"? The quality of my courtesy took a real hit. I remarked:"Hey! YOU work for Walmart. If you don't know what YOU just installed, we're in trouble, bub". At that point the other staff member (not any kind of "manager") took over.
.
Happy ending though. I fully expected a pro-rata replacement charge. The (new) battery was no charge. THAT was a real surprise.
.
Entry level management dumb? Dumber than a box of rocks! Walmart-'ya gotta' love 'em.

I have to disagree. While many of the rumors about Walmart are true, you cannot base your experience of a bad transaction & label Walmart cashiers across the board as stupid. I have a college degree & average to above average intelligence. I worked as a cashier at Walmart. My managers & store manager were just outstanding & hard working individuals. The training was superior. We all make mistakes & please don't judge people "just because they only work at Walmart". That is an extremely cruel report you left, shame on you! A satisfied Walmart customer

AUTHOR: Clifford - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 24, 2008

I am not a regular Walmart shopper, but over the years I have been to many Walmarts in various areas of the country.

I can honestly say that I have never had any of these problems Ripoff Report posters seem to have. I think they create their own problems. If you go in to any store with a chip on your shoulder, an arrogant attitude, an attitude of entitlement and a rude demeanor, you WILL have problems.

I always treat everyone with respect, good humor, a friendly demeanor and helpful attitude. I always get treated the same way.

I never ask for special treatment, special favors or unreasonable requests.

The people that work at Walmart are just like any other cross section of humanity. Mostly good hardworking Americans but there are always a few exceptions just like everywhere else.

Walmart is no different than any other large organization.

I find the fact that they are so large and have such a big influence on communities offensive, but -hey- that's how the capitalist system works. We live in America and whether we like Walmart or not, it's a legal and VERY successful company. There have been others (IBM, AT&T, GM, Microsoft and others). Some get bigger, some fade and others split or whatever. This is America, it's part of our system and we don't like everything about it, just most things.

Lighten up and treat people the way you'd like to be treated and things will be a lot better and you will live a much happier and serene life.

Lay off cashiers

AUTHOR: Gwen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 23, 2008

As a front-end cashier for a local grocery store, I more than sympathize with the Wal-Mart cashiers who've commented. Before anyone rags on the cashiers, walk a mile in our shoes. Some people have commented here that if a cashier has had a bad day, they shouldn't take it out on the customer. That works both ways. If you and your husband/wife/kids/job,ect. has upset you, don't take it out on us. I've had people I've waited on carry on a conversation on their cell phones the whole time they were being waited on, which I think is the epitome of rudeness. I've also had people complain that an item being purchased didn't ring up on sale, only to find out that the item the customer had wasn't the brand on sale or the size they had was not the size on sale. I've even had people get mad at me because coupons they had were expired and expected me to scan them anyway. Just recently, our store had a sale on Pepsi: get 5 12 packs for $10, with an additional $25 purchase. The customers could quote the $10 price. They forgot about the additional $25 purchase. I had a lady scream at me about how that was fraud. I calmly explained that it was posted on the sale signs as well as in the sale paper, so it wasn't fraud. She got huffy and left. It's really sad that people have to be that way.

Completely rude, get off your high horse.

AUTHOR: Beachykeen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 19, 2008

I'm a cashier at Wal-Mart's leading competitor, Target, and you saying that they only hire idiots as cashiers is disrespectful and downright rude. And guess what? Some people do have problems doing basic math, and even those who are quite good at it can have bad days, or times when they simply aren't focusing. I've never made a mistake quite as big as $47 but there have been a few times, at the very beginning of my being a cashier, that I have handed people incorrect change, mostly in coins. I will gladly stand up for fellow cashiers in retail who have to sit there and get yelled at by a**holes like you who act as though they've never made a mistake in their entire lives. Nobody's perfect so get off your high horse and start being a little more understanding.

Just the majority!

AUTHOR: 3snakes - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, June 27, 2008

I have worked in some form of customer service for over 15 years. I worked at a Mcdonalds as a teenager getting paid minimum wage. Although I wasn't perfect, I made sure that the customers bag would close instead of stuffing it so full that it wouldn't. I provided napkins and drink carriers instead of handing 5 drinks to a single person in a car. These things are common sense and really do not require any amount of brain power. I am not one of those rude clients, but I have stood behind many of them in the lines at Walmart. I have never thrown things at a cashier, got in the express lane with more than the stated items or yelled at a cashier, however I have to say not all the cashiers are idiots, just the majority of them. I understand there are computer issues, and things that Walmart requires the casher to get a CSM for. It comes down to basic customer service and common sense. I don't want to be hearing about how your weekend with your fellow cashier when you're supposed to be paying attention to my items. I don't want you to be yelling to other cashiers when you're supposed to be taking care of me and then screwing up because you won't pay attention to your job. Bottom line, if the cashier in the original post can't figure out that she was supposed to give back $5 change from that transaction, she shouldn't be handling money! Period! This is common sense, basic math and skills you should have learned in the 3rd grade.

Until Yesterday (Black Fricay 2005), I had sympathy for those who had to deal with employees at Wal-Mart. However, you can all go to hell.

In practically every Wal-Mart store in my region (NYC metro area) and throughout the country, you freaking iidiots rioted when we ran out of low-priced computers. We had 60 of them in stock in our store and you animals trampled over people and knocked down counters and registers instead of waiting your turn. Is 60 not enough computers? We sell that many in about six months.

As far as I'm concerned, you deserve all the disrespect you get and after yesterday I can tell you that Wal-Mart employees aren't taking any s**t from you any more. So go ahead and act like an a*****e. You'll be treated like one.

IF you use COMMON sence it could have been solved in the store

AUTHOR: Barb - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Hello.
I've read one of the stories here and it could have been solved in the store... What you do is when you get the change back and it is wrong don't have a fit there call for a manager if well sometimes they are really out of it then just go to customer service with everything ask to see a top manager. You don't have to tell them what its for cause you know they are going to want to fix and that isn't going to happen. When the manager get's there take a deep breath and tell him/her what happened. they will pull her draw and count the money then will get it fixed. I don't believe walmart hires idiots they just hire everyone that wants to work. So, you as customers need to learn how to use comon sence..and less stress. take it hire up.. Cause believe it or not there are really some great employees there.
thanks for letting me vent also.

Wal-Mart & Its Customer

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 11, 2005

I was a CSM (Customer Service Manager) for WM for 3 years while in college. The CSMs job is to supervise/run the front-end (registers & service desk), and deal with customer issues.

About Cashiers:
The job is very low wage, uninteresting, grunt work. A day as a cashier is not a day of fun. Sure, most of the cashiers I worked with really didnt have other skills to do anything else.....others are young and inexperienced. But, that's why they are working at Wal-Mart instead of Nordstroms.

About Customers:
Mostly morons. They have no concept that Wal-Mart is a DISCOUNT retailer,....how does WM afford that? Answer: by not paying employees well, and lightly scheduling staff. On this thread a lady (Michele I think) said to her she expects the same level of service and professionism no matter if the person is making "$6 or $60 dollars and hour" - how retarded is that?.......gee, when I buy a 'Rolex' on the street for $20, I expect it to be of the same quality as the $20000 store bought model.
($60= I'll listen to your worries all day, $6= I don't give a rat's a*s)

Also, my wal-mart store had over 120,000 skus (that's items for you non-retailers). There is no way that every employee is going to know the details of each one.

Their might be 20 registers, but I'll guarantee that there is not 20 cashiers scheduled. It's called payroll, WM keeps a lean staff. (Again, its that whole pesky profit & loss thing).

Besides "High & Mighty" customer, you're shopping at WAL-MART......if you really had that much class or cash, you wouldn't be.

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 14, 2005

Woof,

I take exception to your statement that even the customers are idiots. I for one shop at Wal-Mart all the time. They price match every local competitor, so I get the best prices at one place, instead of running all over town to different stores.

And this also includes name brands, not just Great Value and Bar S. And while I do agree that sometimes the quality of the store brands are not as good as the national brands, that is not always true. I have not found any differences in the dairy and meats. Sometimes the quality is even better.

You cannot say ALL customers of Wal-Mart are idiots, same as you can't say ALL associates are idiots. It's just not true. Granted, I have run into some cashiers that are slow, or have bad attitudes. But I have seen twice as many who are friendly, courteous and fast.

It also depends on the location. There is one by my house that has good employees and is where I do all my shopping. There is one by my office in downtown Phoenix that I avoid like the plague, because it is in a run down part of town, and it is reflected in the employees.

Wal-Mart has it's problems, just like all other retailers, but I won't lump the entire company into a single group because of an experience at one location.

I did not work at walmart. I have worked at mcdonalds for about two years when I was a teenager. I now am a graphic designer for a moderate size ad firm. Point is the job I have now is not a fraction as stressfull or as hard as the mcdonald's job was.

Unless you have had to do a job where you dealt with a public that had no respect for people in your position, then you really have no reason to complain and probally would not be. Those people deal with a alot of crap from the general public for pay that generally does not pay the bills. Does it give them the excuse to be rude, no, but a little more tolerance would be nice.

After all you get to leave walmart and go home to a decent life, they have to work twice as many hours as most people just to keep their electricty on. Walk a mile in their shoes and tell me that you are upset that a cashier had to count on her fingers to give you the correct change. Give me a break!

Walmart

AUTHOR: Barbara - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 22, 2005

I love it, this chain of letters should be a Walmart commercial.

I worked in retail for more then 20 yrs. I worked in Safeway's 4th largest grossing store and others.

I stood for 8 hrs a day and treated EVERY customer with the same respect. I said Hello; Paper or Plastic; I read them the total; I called out the amount that they Tendered; and I counted back the change; and I said Thank-you.
Sound repetitious.....it was, but I believed that that was my job.

There were bad customers, but it just takes one to make it bad. So truthfully there were very few bad customers.

The management and their lack of intellegence was what I found horrendous.

At Safeway, you all work out of the same drawers of money. There is NO cash control.

At one store, back in the day when a customer could get cash back from a check; one manager would allow them to get $40. and the other would allow them to get $50. So if the generous Mgr. stepped out of the store and you didn't know it and let the customer write for $50. The other wouldn't allow it and make them write another check.

The point that I want to make is that there is a lot going on behind the cashier that the customer doesn't know and shouldn't know.

I agree with the writers that feel that it is Walmarts management that is at fault. I agree. They are MANAGEment that is THEIR job.
But there is so much management to do the job that they don't know that NO ONE is doing it.

Safeway would hire Spanish speaking employees without ever checking to see if they could read English. If they can't speak, understand or read English, it isn't their fault that they can't.....and they know that they can't. So the fault lies in the management of the company.
If they are going to hire anyone with limited English skills and the positions needs a wide knowledge of English, then the company needs to teach them English...but they don't even offer them video classes.

So don't even worry about if ANYBODY was hired for math ability.

Another great myth about Retail. Communication. It is one way and in writing...sometimes.

No store meetings...ever...at least not with the sales floor people.

Written notices: In the backroom on the wall by a schedule that is from Sunday until Saturday and changes drastically from week to week.

During the Gulf War......American groceries stores suffered by lost caviar sales and the higher cost of fuel products (Plastic bags). So we the cashiers and baggers would have to ask you the customer if you would like Plastic or Paper. Because you see Safeway used strategist that would say customers given a choice will choose the latter.....Paper then. After the war....a new note. Ask if they want Paper or Plastic.

Another thing both parties need to step back and take a breath.

My Note to Employees and Customers.

When you are having a bad day, deal with it, don't pass it out to others, they could be dealin' with stuff too. Leave all your life's drama outside because it needs room to breathe.

Conversations should be lite and not lengthy.

If there is a problem:
The employee should call over that manager (they get paid the big bucks to handle that, even if it's only a dollar more then you). You want the manager involved, because if the customer is mad and leaves, they'll call back with a really different version.

Employees no matter how right you feel or how violated you feel it is NOT your job to prove the customer wrong; insult them; etc. Call the manager and stop talking.
The manager can take them aside and you can continue to wait on others that shouldn't have to be affected by the situation.
If you know that you are right, you haven't anything to worry about.

Customers need to take a breath before springing out when they feel violated. Calmness gets more of a reponse from the people that you want a response from. Afterwards go home and write a letter, email, etc to the company, Rip Off.com, etc.

I am a customer now, and I keep my mouth shut. Life keeps changing and even jobs that I have done have changed, so I just keep quiet. It works for me.

"Low prices always" means poor service sometimes

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, December 30, 2004

I'm a Wal-Mart employee who happens to have a masters degree -- in computers no less. And yes, the Wal-Mart cash register system is difficult to learn and the only way to learn it is by doing it. It is very frustrating for many cashiers in the beginning of their employment.

But if you shop at Wal-Mart and want the low prices the store offers, you have to understand that low wages and the resulting workers are part of the 'low priceS always " price you pay. I work in the Tire-Lube Express. People sometimes have to wait as much as four hours for service, but they pay half or even less than at dealers and service stations -- where they would still have to wait for hours!

But, in our geographic area -- Long Island, Wal-Mart is the only type of big box retailer whose employees are nearly all full timers and they get better benefits than most retail workers. And from what I see, Wal-Mart employees give far better service than employees at competitors such as Target, Sears and K-Mart. Cashiers are at the bottom rung of the associate/employee ladder, but you also have sales associates who really, really know their products and can give you great assistance.

Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the world. Naturally there will be a few knuckleheads. And naturally, you get a few ill-tempered knuckleheads like the person in Albany as customers.

I do the best I can to make sure everyone I come into contact with gets the information they desire. Just because I don't know the answer doesn't mean I can't find out. Don't call be hateful and rude cause i can't give the answer one desires RIGHT NOW!! I shouldn't have to come home and worry about work when I am done with the day. There are some rules that there is nothing I or anyother associate can help we didn't make them we just have to follow them. I may not even agree with them but I do have to follow them. Please think twice before throwing a fit on the associates give them time to find the answer or get a manager for you. I understand one may be very angry when talking to an associate and believe me we the associates have been angry to so we do understand, Please take a breath and just tell them what is wrong with name calling and rudeness. AUTHOR: Jesse - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, December 16, 2004

Minniemay, do you have all the facts on the matter at hand? Maybe the cashier checking out your purchases had a question about how to do something. Would you rather they guess how to do it and mess up? A lot of times, one cashier would learn how to do something, and would share that information with others. That way they didn't have to wait for a CSM just to ask a question. If they were holding a conversation about their romantic life, that would be wrong. But without knowing what they were saying, I would not pass judgement on these cashiers. For all I know, the first cashier could've been asking the second how to answer the register when the system rasies a question for them.

Wal-mart employees aren't alone in the subsistence lifestyle.

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 08, 2004

It encompasses many of the routine service jobs that we all use and take for granted everyday.

More often than not, immigrants and minorities are forced into these low paid positions. Lately, many displaced factory workers have had to join them in poverty.

Wal-mart contributes greatly to this. By forcing suppliers to outsource their labor to China, they are quickly eliminating the last vestiges of American manufacturers who provide merchandise to retail stores.

The PBS series Frontline did an investigative report detailing this very phenomenon.

The book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America provides one writer's journey into the lifestyle that so many of these workers are trapped in. Interesting reading.

Jerica, glad to hear you've moved on! Hopefully, your new position utilizes more of your intellectual prowess rather than just your physical abilities.

Good luck!

Read This ..When a Wal-Mart comes to town, it drives out local businesses out of business and lowers the overall local wage averages

AUTHOR: Matthew - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 07, 2004

OK before I start, let's just get the "intelligence" issue out of the way:

B.A. Political Science
5 Years Paid IT Experience
1.5 Years Banking Industry Experience
25 Years Computer Experience

I applied for a job at Sam's Club because I had been laid-off from a Network Manager position (due to the 9/11/01 terror attacks) that had paid me close to $67K. I was getting desperate after my severance ran out.

Now that we know I'm not an ignorant dumba$s...

I worked at Sam's Club, the membership arm of Wal-Mart. A lot of what former and current employees have written about working for Wal-Mart is true. I will elaborate.

I worked as the Electronics & Computer department of my store, and was paid a "generous" salary of $11.00/hr because of my computer experience and my refusal to work for anything less. I knew that most of my co-workers were making $7.00/hr *TOPS* My responsibilities included keeping the displays looking perfect, keeping the stock full (no spaces in/under shelving), assisting cutomers, and keeping my department clean and neat. I was later "trained" to do my department's inventory (reading a spreadsheet and confirming numbers on the sheet vs. actual in stock-- real rocket-science (NOT!))

I was hired before the store was opened, and all new hires were required to go out in groups and visit local (some not so local) businesses to sell memberships (both personal and business) for about 3 weeks. This was basically cold-calling door-to-door sales, which I hate, but $11/hr beat sitting at home making $0/hr.

One silly thing is the practice of making everyone do a group cheer each day. It is so dumb and is counter productive. It is supposed to instill motivation and energy, but it only disgusts employees (except the "Lifers" with the 5,10,15, or 20 year stickers on their nametags).

Once the store received its legal certificates, it was up to the employees to finish the interior of the store. That meant that everything you see inside the store was built by employee labor. I have to admit that it was kind of fun, building the 2-story high shelving, and making it all come together. However, this kinda seemed weird that such a huge corporation would not have hired professional construction workers to finish out the store...

Soon, some kids from Eastern Europe were trucked in directly from the airport, suitcases and all. Most couldn't speak more than basic English. They worked really well and were more than happy to work 10-12 hours per day, because (as one told me) back in their country, kids their age are expected to work 18-20 hours per day for less pay. All in all they were nice kids, and the gals were borderline hotties, but that's another story. ;) Anyway, these kids would disappear after a couple months and new ones would replace them... Strange...

OK fast-forward to normal operations:

Here are my observations:

Cashiers: Usually the pretty gals (usually between 19-22 years old) and were sent to 3 day training at other stores. The ones I knew were pretty good at what they did, and a few were downright sharp! One gal I knew and was friends with made Customer Service Manager in record time.

The back-office people who managed deliveries, kept control of stock, and made front-end operations work were top-notch. They knew their stuff and I really liked them.

A few employees were trained to drive the forklifts, and I knew/liked a couple of them. There was this one guy though who thought he was "all that" but ended up crashing a 'lift into the back door fo the store, doing a bit of damage. He did last too long.

Management... OK here it gets ugly.

Breaks: For those of us who were "full time" (but not really) you got 2x 15 minute breaks during the day + 30 minutes for lunch. You had to clock-out for all breaks.

Oh, almost forgot-- except for breaks, you were not allowed to sit down, and personal cell phones were forbidden.

For me, I was usually the only person in my department, and my manager said he wanted 100% staffing 100% of the time. So many times I would either go without lunch or would get called back to work during my lunch break because a customer needed help with something in my dept. For this I was reprimanded because my hours were going over 37.5 and a few times they actually had to pay me overtime. I was told to take ALL my breaks so I wouldn't go over 37.5 hours/week. I told them I was instructed to cover my dept 100%, 100% of the time. They didn't care.

Back to the forklift issue-- the rotating manager schedule meant that usually only 2 managers were in the store at any given time. Most of the managers were NOT forklift licensed (you had to take courses to certify). So what? you may ask... Well, as a lot of Sam's Club stock is stored up high in the shelves, you need a forklift to get it down. Many times I would have to turn customers away because no one could get the product (usually high-end like refrigerators or other bulky item) down for them to purchase. One customer even rented a truck to bring home the full-sized refrigerator he had planned on buying. Guess what, he lost money on the rental and had to cme back another day.

In my department, I rarely saw my manager, except when he had to do weekly reports. Then I saw him a couple hours and he was gone. After the store had been open for a while the floors in my dept started getting nasty. So each morning after my stocking had been done, I'd grab the zamboni and scrub the floors. My manager said that it's not my job and I shouldn't do it. I told him that having a clean department WAS part of my job. He countered that it's the janitorial staff's job to scrub the floors. I said, "Obviously they're not doing it, because the floors are still nasty."

At my 3 month review, I was dinged because my manager said that I did not follow instructions as given (nevermind that I ran my department and other hardlines singlehandedly due to personnel shortages). I still got a whopping $0.30/hr raise!! Whoopee! (note: in my *current* position, I received a 4% cost-of-living adjustment which comes out to about $50/paycheck after being there only 9 months)

Around this time, I started seeing co-workers whom I had established friendships with start getting fired for no good reason. Good guys who did the jobs no one else wanted, and did them well. Fired. Gone. No explanations given. Just gone. I decided to quit due to the lack of effective management and the unexplained mysterious apparently random firings. I wrote up my resignation letter and handed it in to the HR manager. She said that since I only gave 10 working days notice (2 business weeks in my book), I would not be eligible for re-hire. I said "No problem." (Why would I want to work for them again when I'm quitting of my own free will?)

I don't know if this applies to sam's Club employees, but a fairly recent court case exposed Wal-Mart's practiceof taking out insurance policies on their employees. Apparently, a Wal-Mart employee was bringing a heavy item out to a custoemr's car and later collapsed and died froma heart attack. Wal-Mart collected and refused to give a dime to the guy's widow. Wal-Mart said that they paid the premium and it's their money. Legally, yeah they're right, but couldn't they spare a grand or two for the widow..? Nice eh?

Oh and for those who think Wal-Mart is so good because of their low prices: How do you think they keep prices so low? Pay minimum wage to its employees, use employee labor where professionals are clearly required, and grabbing every penny they can at the expense of the employees.

When a Wal-Mart comes to town, it drives out local businesses out of business and lowers the overall local wage averages, as local businesses will have to lower their wages (reducing overhead)to stay competitive with Wal-Mart.

Yeah, we all like cheap prices. But remember where those prices come from.

Judge Not, Lest Ye be Judged

Dear Louis,

Have you ever considered why the employees seem to be in a bad mood? Have you ever examined your own behavior in dealing with these employees? Has it ever occured to you that the reason employees don't treat you "right" is because you behave like a jerk towards them?

People who are abusive towards employees in service industries always love to hide behind the ol' "customer is always right" slogan. Like that gives them an excuse to behave like in an unacceptable manner.

The front line employees are doing the best they can. It was my experience that over 90% of customers were good. It was always those few customers, who thought they were better than others and exempt from the same rules everyone else lived by.

Man, I thought my job was hard!

It's a wonder they can find people to put up with that!

Trust me, you'll do fine in life. How do I know? You write well. Educated. Literate. You can feel the day to day WM experience through your words.

That beats 80% of the adult population. You're just in an economically depressed area. That's all.

Otherwise, you'd be earning twice as much for 30% less work.

Stay in school. Get your degree. Start an internship in your field.

Someday, you'll look back at all this as a learning experience.

You know what they say! Whatever doesn't kill you just leaves you stronger.

The REAL Wal-Mart Experience

AUTHOR: Jerica - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 06, 2004

I am an 18 year old, 2004 high school graduate, who recently quit Wal-Mart. There are several aspects that have been discussed in the rebuttals that I'd like to add my two cents to.

The reason I applied and worked for Wal-Mart was not because I lacked intelligence. I made straight A's all through school, took college classes during high school and was accepted to several very good colleges, including Texas Christian University (TCU) with scholarships. My major will be Psychology.

The reason I applied was because I had no prior work experience, which made many better companies turn me down for employment. (I needed a form of income to help pay for college, gas, and any necessities.) In addition, during my interview (which was quite strict with very difficult questions) I was informed of all the "wonderful career opportunities" that awaited me in the company. And about how you could "move up" on the success ladder. It was a very convincing speech.

I was hired as a cashier making a whopping $6.40/hour, but promised many raises after I had been there 90 days. I took hours upon hours of what they call CBL's (Computer Based Learning). It gave very little instruction on how to do the many different types of transactions we would encounter. It basically stressed that the customer was the boss and that we had to bend over backwards for their every need. (The Ten Foot Rule, CHANT, and the many, many posters in the break room that says: Smile! Greet the Customer, Make Eye Contact, and Ask Them "How is your day going?")

After being "trained" (which for me was actually watching another trainee on a register from the side for 2 hours), I was sent to an experienced cashier to observe. It was VERY busy that day. They had almost all registers open and the lines were still very long. After standing next to the cashier for about 10 minutes, a very tall, very large 40 something year old male customer started shouting at me "Can you help me?!" And, I replied "I'm sorry, sir, but I'm only in training and not allowed to be on a register at this time. If you would like, I will try to find a register with a shorter line." (Trying my hardest to be as polite and courteous as all the CBL's stressed.) He continued to harrass me, saying "You've GOT to be kidding me! Maybe yall need to get some F-ing cashiers with some F-ing brains, instead of ones with their F-ing head stuck up their F-ing asses." His face was turning red and I was terrified. I did not know how to handle the situation and he was getting closer to me as the line moved. No one did anything. I was on the verge of tears. I was scared he was going to get in my face. He continued to glare and harrass me until a CSM noticed and had me open an express register. The CSMs gave me a long lecture and begged me not to quit. Saying it would never happen again.

I can't imagine "stupid" people surviving as cashiers at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart prides itself on Customer Satisfaction and making everything as simple as possible for the customer (making everything harder for employees). Unfortunately, cashiers need CSM approval for MANY things. At my store there was one CSM for every 15 registers and 4 self-checkouts. You have to know how to do basic transactions, of course. But, you're also expected to be able to identify a fake check and know the debit/credit card machine's every function and fall-up so you can teach customers how to pay if they don't know how and fix it if it doesn't work as it's suppose to. You're also required to know how to fix the scale if it messes up (which is quite often) and how to fix your printer and change receipt tape. In addition to this, you're expected to know: how to do coupons (which are not all the same), price overrides (since WM matches competitor's prices) as well as know which ones to approve, tax exempt purchases, WIC, layaway payments, WM credit card payments, gift receipts, dicount cards, PLU #'s, activating gift cards, checking history and balance of gift cards, reloading gift cards, selling car batteries, activating phone cards as well as reloading them, activating certain electronic purchases, and you must make sure everything is (security) de-activated and the gator tags removed from the clothing so the alarm doesn't sound. You must also learn the many, many, many codes for the CSM's that let them know (on a palm pilot) any probelm you are having (change, receipt tape, price check, etc.) Not to mention if a customer writes a check for over the amount and if a debit user wants cash back without letting you know. Selling age-restricted items has its own prompts and a lot of people gripe about you checking their ID. (you can get fined and fired for selling to minors) Wal-Mart even has a specific way to bag items. Customers also expect you to know the merchandise and the store (I worked in a Super-Center) backwards and forwards. Anything that has gone wrong during their shopping is always your fault (including their favorite item not being in stock). I had a man gripe me out over a can of soup.

Almost every other customer complains about a price (which is always rediculously lower than any other store, and if not, WM lowers it to match theirs). I would have probably 15 price checks in a day, sometimes more. A lot of customers wanted everything bagged in a very specific way, sometimes not making any sense at all. Oh and don't forget the hand scanners (that never worked) for all the stuff on the bottom that people were too lazy to pick up (i.e. 50 Ib dog food bags, various large items, cat litter, cokes, etc.), which you would end up having to lift and carry to scan since the hand scanner didn't work and the customer wouldn't read the product code to you. Food items would leak a lot (especially raw chicken, milk, ice cream, and eggs) since customers would throw items into their basket and onto the belt without care and then expect you to be very, very careful with their murchandise. So, your hands were nasty, the belt and register was dirty (which made scanning items difficult sometimes) and you had no time to clean. If a customer's check, debit, or credit card is declined, you get chewed out (which by the way is verified by the bank or credit card company...THEY are the ones that decline, not WM and certainly not the cashier.) All of this, and your expected to work very fast. The customers are in a hurry, you must get your line down, and your scan time is being watched. After 8 hours, my back, arms, and feet would ache so bad, I would sometimes feel like I was going to pass out.

Aside from how horrible most Wal-Mart customers are, I got walked all over by managers. I worked up to 6 days a week with insane hours. Sometimes working until midnight and having to come in the next morning. Your sleep schedule is ruined. Sometimes I would only get 5 hours of sleep a night. You have no free weekends to do anything with friends or family and you work holidays. I lived 30 min. away and sometimes I would have to drive half an hour to work for 3 hours. They always manipulated my schedule to where I had just under 40 hours (a lot of the time, I would have 39) so they would not have to classify me full time and give me benefits. The only perk I had was a 10% discount card that only worked if it wasn't food, sale, or clearance. If you worked 8 hours, you got an hour (unpaid) lunch and 2 15 min. breaks (which were almost always late. I was always exhausted and stressed. No sick time, vacation, or holidays. You're allowed to ask for a day off (3 weeks ahead of time), but you won't get it. WM is closed one day of the year: Christmas Day.

I called in one day that I was throwing up (and only scheduled to work 5 hours, which entitled me to 1 15 min. break) and I was chewed out by a manager and told that I had to come in. It was at that point that I realized, you know what? This is not worth the $6.40 an hour. I'm tired of being disrespected by customers and management and worked to the bone for little pay. So, I quit. And I have not been this happy since before I started working there. I've been unemployed for about a week and a half. After bills and food (btw, I am a month pregnant), I only have $115 dollars in my bank account. But, it's ok, because at least I'm not still working there.

So next time a cashier makes a mistake, think about what THEIR day has been like before you decide to gripe at them or post on this site about how "stupid" they are. And, if you've made it to the end of this, thank you very much for reading this. I really wish people knew what WM cashiers go through. I hope it will make it easier on cashiers. God knows, they work very hard. (Because if they don't, they'll get fired.)

You Get What You Pay For

AUTHOR: Buff - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 14, 2004

When all of you turn right at the light just ouside of town, and enter the parking lot of the Wal-Wart-centered-plaza, what do you see? A "Dollar Tree", a "Ryans", a "Shoe Show", and other variey of discount specialty or "grab-Bag" stores, and a decent, but informal and inexpensive restaurant. In some cases, a "Williams Oil gas station".

You're not driving down Fifth Avenue, and Wal-Mart is by no means Saks or The Gap, for that matter. It is a low-cost, middle-of-the-line-store that offers middle-of-the-line products for a median price. Some of the items are the same as you may get at Sears, or at the "Dollar General".

The key is the price. You pay less for the items because they pay less for it. If they were to require that their employees obtain a PhD for running the cash register, do you really think you could get the items that you obviously shop there for at even twice the price? The average employee there makes about 7.00/hr., and in most cases, that is a step up from the McD's across the street.

The fact is, this is the service industry. Some people can't land better jobs for lack of education, or ability... Wal-Mart does hire a lot of people with disabilities who couldn't EARN a living elsewhere. Some people are just in-betweeners... waiting for that better opportunity to come along. And then there are the retirees who need a few more bucks a week because the Social Security taxes they paid for 50 years amounted to squat!!! Wal-Mart is a great place, and is a benefit to the community.

I have had mixed experiences with their employees, but all the same can be said anywhere else, can't it? Haven't any of you looked at the person beside whom you work, and wished they just walk into the intersection and lie down??? At the same time, some of the people at Wal-Mart, as with anywhere else, take their job seriously, and do it to the best of their ability. Furthermore, as far as your incidents... remember, these cashiers handle Thousands of dollars every day, and sometimes, I'm sure their brain gets a little frazzled.

I am in senior management where I am employed, and there are times that I complain about what I make, and about the hours I spend away from my wife and children. There is nothing new there. Be a little more thoughtful of these people who work at places like this... one day, it may be you standing at the door wiping off the buggies because your $745/mo. so. sec. sheck don't pay the bills.

What Walmart pays for and what we don't get.

AUTHOR: Loretta - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 13, 2004

I too agree with several of the views. I am a Walmart Employee. Although I do not see my self as a stupid cashier, I can relate to customer complaints, as I do so on a daily basis.

It's ironic how I have expierenced the same bad service when off the clock. And it's exactly this " What Walmart pays for is what Walmart gets ".. s**t!!! You see, most employees sit in the break room, taking there lazy break complaining about low pay and how much of a pain customers can be. Walmart pays crap, and the employees tend to take it out on the customer.

But the reality of it all is this, no one applies at Walmart for the money, because there is none. Most are there for the benefits, and flexibility, which they are promised at their date of hire, which they eventually find that they never get as well. Because of all of this, Low Pay, s**t Hours, and No Benefits..

The Waltons have became the richest people in the world at the exspense of their employee's and the Consumer. Sam Walton was the only smart one in the equation, and has since passed his ignorance on down the family tree.

#46 UPDATE Employee

Some people shouldn't be allowed to procreate.

AUTHOR: Lara - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 02, 2004

I'm an employee of Wal-Mart. And though I think the company is the root of all that is evil, I'm stuck working there for little pay and even less respect until I can find a better job.

There are plenty of people I work with who don't come off as very bright. There are also plenty of customers. So many of you want to list out things associates have done to come off as stupid, please allow me to list out some customer incidents.

1. The other day I'm on my way back to my department, Layaway, and as I walk up toward the counter a customer taps me on the arm and asks, "Ma'am, where is layaway?" Mind you I am surrounded by signs that have the layaway policies on them and a very large Christmas layaway sign on the back wall. Politely I respond, "You're in layaway". Some people may have been rude to her, but when you're that stupid, that's what you might get.

2. A customer gives me a cutout from the paper of an ad stating Kleenex is on special with 3 for the price of 2. She brings me 3 of the 3-packs and says she has a coupon. On those 3-packs it says "Buy 2 get 1 free! School Days Special". I explain to her that it's not a coupon, it's just an ad. She says, "No, these are the ones in the picture and it says I get one free if I buy 2." I calmly show her the packaging and explain they are sold as a 3-pack but priced as a 2-pack. They are the sale, it's not a coupon. There is no barcode, no expiration date, no coupon info at all. She still doesn't get it and wants a manager. If you're that stupid, you deserve whatever attitude you get.

3. While working in customer service, a woman brings me 2 cds, open, no receipt. She wants her money back. I explain the INTERNATIONAL copy right laws to her and why she can only exchange for the exact same item. She doesn't want to hear it. She wants her money back so she can go buy the unedited version. Her 14 year old daughter wants the ones with cuss words on them. Right. Well, that's sweet that you want to give your daughter the foul versions, but considering they are open, no. CSM comes over and lets her have a gift card. Totally breaking the cr law and making me look like a liar.

4. Working in the speedy lane always brings fun. When people come over to your line with WAY over 20 items. We're talking like 50+. You want to talk about inability to add or subtract. What about all of the customers that can't add enough to know they have multiples of 20 in their cart?

That's just a few. In close to 2 years slaving for this company, I have dealth with HUNDREDS of stupid customers. In photo lab I had to deal with so many rude, disrespectful, stupid people, it was mind-numbing. Not only that, but I got cussed out on a regular basis there for things I couldn't control. Machines breaking down, for example. Machines will break down every now and then. It happens. Paper jams. You have to be understanding of that fact that it takes time to get things running again. So if your one hour order takes 15 minutes longer, we can't help it.

People don't understand. Especially people who've never worked retail. We don't get paid what we deserve. Our benefits aren't what people think they are. We don't always get our breaks, we rarely get our lunches on time. We don't get treated respectfully by customers or our managers. We're expected to work extra hours one day and cut them out of the next so as not to make overtime. We get in to a GREAT deal trouble for gaining even 1 minute of overtime.

And they have 31 cash registers because during the holiday season, they use them all. Our store just hired 55 new cashiers. They are all seasonal. Our stores turnover rate is 46%. And why aren't there more experienced cashiers, you may ask. Because they get rid of you after you make so much so they can hire someone at the starting rate. The cashiers you see standing around in a group around a podium wasting time and chatting it up are, in fact, waiting for a CSM to give them their money and/or an assignment (which register to go to).

Waiting in line at a store is expected. So get over that. And as for stupid cashiers calling for help every 4.03 seconds or whatever retarded crap was said, like someone else mentioned, the registers give cashiers practically no authority. We can't pop our drawers to give you change. We can't price override over a certain amount. And note that when something is priced wrong, it's not the cashiers fault, so back off. We also can't key in a card number without a key turn or void over $50... there's tons of stuff. Almost any action outside of ringing up a regular transaction requires a managers key.

If you want to be pissed at someone, be pissed at Wal-Mart for the way they run their company. The poor quality you see in the cashiers is a direct reflection of the poor quality management leading them. If management didn't make associates hate, and I mean HATE, their jobs so much, it wouldn't be so difficult to keep on a smiley face.

Oh, and one last thing. This is a site to report companies that rip you off, commit fraud, stuff like that. You having ONE cashier give you incorrect change doesn't qualify. Want to talk about stupid people, write an auto-biography.

Cashiers are stupid? How about some customers?

AUTHOR: Melissa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 28, 2004

I happen to be a cashier at the Burlington Supercenter, and I'm not some mindless idiot. Maybe I should be looking for a different job?
Wait..how about stupid customers? At each register, there is a sign that clearly states that all tobacco purchases must be made at register 7. Why, then, must you come through my line and read the sign and then ask if you can buy cigarettes? The sign's not up for decoration.
Or maybe you could check the price tag on the shelf under the item you are looking at to make sure it is the CORRECT tag for that item..instead of coming through my line and bitching at me because the item rang up at the "wrong" price? It would be a lot quicker for you, me and everyone behind you in line if you'd learn how to read.

Oh, and I never realized what pigs women can be until I started working in retail. For heaven's sake, how much time does it take to FLUSH the toilet?? Do you know, the other day, one of the maintenance men found a pair of UNDERWEAR flushed down the toilet, clogging it? How disgusting is that? C'mon ladies..you can do better than that.
I could go on and on..maybe I'll post another rebuttal when it's closer to Christmas. I've noticed that that is when more of the stupid people come out, and I mean STUPID. Like if they fell out of a stupid tree, they had to hit EVERY branch on the way down.

So I guess I'll get off this thing now, go admire my high school diploma, work a little more on my criminal justice degree, and laugh at all of you who want to insult people like me, because I just KNOW you may be one of the next stupid customers that comes through my line.
Happy Holidays.

It's Not The Cashiers

AUTHOR: Tracy - (U.S.A.)

I am a walmart cashier. I do my job very well. But in my 12 hour days i meet the most rude, stupid customers in my line. for some reason they seem to think im some kind of wizard who can answer any question they have. i do not have a crystal ball. i do not know where to get school uniforms for your fat child. i do not know how many ppl feed cat chow to their cats. my line does say 20 items or less not 200 items or more!!! for those who like to complain about cashiers, how about complaining about those who actually hold up our lines like the very slow check writers? or those who want to read the gossip mags.? those who are busy running after their children and not putting their items on the belt? And maybe the reason why we are not at our registers is because, the last time you was at walmart you decided you didnt want the hot-pockets. so you place the cold box on the shelf with the candy bars. so we kindly must take your discarded items back to where they belong. but then again the reason could be because most ppl are in a hurry to get no where.if the cashiers where giving out hundered dollar bills you'd gladly stand in line....

Try using kindness instead of hate when you deal with your fellow human being.

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 22, 2004

So much hate on this page! So much anger! I couldn't even get through all the postings.

What did all the angry people get out of this? Do you find yourself silently cursing others? Muttering under your breath? This a*****e? That jackass?

How does that make you feel? Good? I doubt it. You're angry. Your stomach is in knots. But, because your in public, you keep it all bottled up inside. Is that good for you?

Would you like to turn all this rage and anger into happiness? It's real easy to do that!

Try being helpful for a change. Help the cashier instead of yelling at them. Help the customer instead of blowing them off.

Make it a contest. See if you can leave the person smiling after you leave. You go away happy. The other person walks away happy. It's not so hard to do this.

If you're sitting there thinking this is nonsense, tell me, how has hate and anger improved your life?

Has it made you any money? Do people respect you more? Are your children better off with your yelling?

Has it solved any problems that you know of? You want your food or your change faster. Did responding with hate accomplish that for you?

Exactly how has hate, anger, or rude behavior ever did anything good for anyone?

Hate is easy. Anger is easy. It's a little harder to react with kindness and consideration for others.

But in the end, compassion allows you to walk away with a good feeling inside. You have taken a few seconds out of your day to actually help someone. To look at things from their point of view.

Perhaps you may run into a cashier who has trouble with math. If you ran into an elderly person who tripped and fell in front of you, would you simply kick them out of your way? I don't think so.

Life is short. It is what you make it. You have the choice to be happy and considerate to others. Or, you can be miserable and hateful.

As you get older, and look back, will you be satisfied with the life you have led?

I can't belive that you are so perfect and that you think that you have never done anything to make you look like an idiot yourself.

I am myself a casiher a walmart and i'll have you know that it may not take a rocket sicientist to operate a cash register but you have to take into consideration of the daily abuse we receive from customers. Come on I could go on all day of all of the stupid things customers do or the annoying things they do that set us off but I won't because I have more common curtisy and dignity to keep it to myself.

No we don't get paid well and no that isn't a reason to give poor service but next time before you decide on all of us being idiots take a good long look at yourself and reconsider who the idiot is.

Dont be so hard on Wal-mart Employees

AUTHOR: Amber - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 28, 2004

Working with the public is a very difficult job. If you have EVER had a job working with the public you could understand how difficult it can be. I have worked many public service type jobs, and believe me, in dealing with the public, everything is your fault. Your the stupid one, your a liar, its your fault that my day is going the way it is, ect, ect...

When I worked for Wal-mart, I did Customer Service and Cashiering. Least to say, you cannot satisfy everyone. I do not know the Wal-marts that any of you have been to, but the one that I worked for, I thought was the best place that I have ever worked for in my life. I know how hard it can be going into a place with bad customer service and comming out peachy-kean like you are happy with what you've just experienced.

I am sorry to hear that you had to go through that. Don't sell Wal-mart short on Customer Service or anything else. Not all stores are alike. I was incrediably satisfied working for them. It all depends on whom they have managing the store. Believe me, I have been called everything because someone was not satisfied that I could not do whatever for them in all my jobs.

I have never been impolight to customers and I have always done my best to make them happy. I know most people are rude and do not think of treating you the way they would want to be treated, but that is part of life, some people I guess were brought up better. I had to quit because I became pregnant and my feet are not the greatest for standing long periods of time. It's not because of what I was paid or anything like that. I would have liked to have made more money. Who does not feel that way?

All and all, I am very sorry for all your bad experiences. I wish I could make them better for you. My sympathy goes out to all of you that have had a bad experience with Wal-mart or its employees, just please do not be so judgemental. Not all stores are the same. Thanks for reading this rebuttal. I hope it has swayed your oppinion of Wal-mart.

Put yourself in the cashier's shoes

AUTHOR: Jesse - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, August 19, 2004

Before going off and badmouthing the cashiers, why don't you try it for a day. Try to be a cashier for that company. Try doing your job to the best of your ability, all while dealing with arrogant stuck up brats posing as adults.

Try dealing with those who would steal you blind if you turned your back for five seconds. Try dealing with brown nosing CSM's and other employees who can't do no wrong in management's eyes.

Only after you have had actual experience as a cashier, then go and say what you want about the cashiers. Otherwise, if you haven't done it, than you don't know what you're talking about, and your counsel on such matters is best left to yourself.

I went to Wal-Mart to exchange a junk phone that

I had Purchased about two weeks before.

I had the everything that belonged with the phone, papers, recipt, etc. except for the phone cord.

I told the customer service cashier that I would like to do an even exchange for the same phone.
She said that because I was missing the phone cord that I could not exchange the phone, because they have to send it back to the manufacturer.

I said ok, take the cord out of the new phone and send that back because the cord that came with the first phone doesn't have any problems.
The cashier freaks out and says "oh, I can't
do that, you need to go home and get the phone cord"

I threw a big fight over a lousey $20.00 phone and did end up getting my way, but come on Wal-mart that is pure stupidity.

AUTHOR: Darlene - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, August 18, 2004

I have had many of the experiences, mostly bad, at Wal-Mart. Four times the alarm sounded when I was leaving the store. Once, the "greeters" followed me out the store yelling at me that I had to return to the store because I had to be checked for stolen merchandise. I have lived in our small town for 40 years and know many people in town. Can you imagine what one would think had they seen this incident? I finally complained to the store manager. My response was "oh, it happens all the time". My response back was "fix your equipment and train your "happy greeters".

My husband had worked in a grocery store for over 30 years and they did get a lot of rude customers. Those people are just stupid and the best way to deal with them is to try to be polite. Why stoop to their level.

My suggestion to Wal-Mart workers who are very upset with the Company is to unite. Join the Retail's Clerk Union in your area. Don't be afraid. There is success in numbers. Wal-Mart will not fire everyone in your store. As long as the greedy Walton family can get away with cheap labor, they will try. I am not a union rep. or even a union member, but have seen the quality of life the Retail Clerk's Union can provide for their members.

Hiring idiots

AUTHOR: Christina - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, August 13, 2004

I worked at Walmart as a Full time cashier and I would like to make a few comments on the original posting and postings submitted in response.

First of all , I am not aware of any company that does not have a known employee that does not meet or exceed customer service.

Have you not ever been to Mcdonald's and received the wrong order? Or have been to a medical facility only to find physicians or staff members that you wonder what planet they received their certification? There are many places and situations that one time or another you may question how this employee obtained this position, however it happens all the time and everywhere.

Walmart employees are not all idiots. I worked for very low wages and was pregnant all through my employment at Walmart. I will tell you what the majority of the employees never hear is compliments. Here is an example of a typical day for me. This is the treament and the respect I upheld to my customers and you can see what i received in reurn.

* I bagged all items according to catagory. Frozen, boxed , fridge items, general merchandise.ect. Let you be known that can be rather difficult when customers line the belt with their items all mixed together. (ie. pesticides with packaged meat beside it). There is very little room to sort and bag.

* Respected the customers at a high level no matter how horrid they were treating me.

* Checked them out in a very fast paced accurate timely manner. Walmart has a required iph level meaning you as a cashier have to be able to scan so many items per hour. This can be slowed down by rude, slow, and unappreciative customers. The store Iph level was 425 an hour. I maintained an average of 600 or more.

* Paid for customers remaining balances because as you may put it they were idiots and overpurchased to what they could afford. Mind you i would only contribute if it were a few dollars or less. Have had customers short by 100.00 before.

and the list goes on and on....

Here is what i got in return.

* A good percentage of my customers were very rude. No matter how polite and professional and I was it never was good enough.

* Ive had items thrown at me for asking for identification for checks or alcohol and tobacco products. (mind you if i didnt card i was fired).

* Ive been cursed at, had things thrown at me, have had to unbag all items because the customer decides they dont want their items or quite frequently because they cant afford all of them.

I have worked many many hours of overtime that I did not volunteer for. If a cashier is running a register and the store becomes busy , the cashier is not going anywhere regardless if its time to go home or in need of a break or lunch. Being pregnant ive worked 6-7 hours with no lunch before or break. Have stayed over several hours when i shouldnt have and had to put up with endless idiots with trivial problems that they always blame the cashier for. (ie...price ringing up wrong, couldnt find a product, couldnt find an employee to assist them, ect ect ).

Anyhow all in all there are idiots everywhere, no matter where you go . I cant say all customers are idiots. No one thinks of a cashiers day and what they go through. If there was no cashiers at all the next time you walked into walmart and they said they were going to be closed for the day you would certainly wish that even the idiot cashier was available. (if you were in a hurry and the next store is 50 miles).

If the issue of your life is one cashier, with a poor experience then you need to reevaluate your life. Stand in line for the time we all had bad customer service but it doesnt end my day. Try complimenting a cashier or two rather than concentrate on the ones you didnt like.

You should see some of the stupid customers I see everyday!!! They want help but are not willing to wait for it. They are rude and insensitive!!! I can count just fine. Her drawer if it was already closed needs to get a csm to open it and then they need to count her drawer and pull a reading if she isn't completely sure if your right.

There are those few bad customers that spoil if for all our good ones. I see alot of nice customers too but there are those who come to wal-mart just to rip us off left and right!!! The way we keep our prices down are from keeping our costs down and that includes reducing theft!!!!

I was on the entrance door greeting and I had my sticker gun in my hand the whole time. I put it on returns that came in the door and pretty much you remember what comes though your doors. He guy took the sicker off the idems and used them to put on two lab tops. The door when off as he was leaving and I stopped him before the exit greeter did. He told me your manager said I could go I had stickers.

I told him ok I just need to see them first and I looked and it had my intails and I never put them on there and they had been tampered with so they said void. He claimed he left one of his recipts in the car and thy let him go get them and he never came back. That was too close. They are some dis honest people out there and alot of rude customers. Next time try being patient and polite and your cashier will return the favor!!!!!

You know, you could be the greatest cashier on the face of the planet. But I don't think so.

Know why?

Because if you can't spell simple words right, then I don't feel confident with you holding my money-and trusting you to give me proper change.

You don't have to agree "wid" me, and that's the beauty of choice and opinion. But nowadays, if I go to a cashier's line and I can't understand her severely broken English-or if I hear a hint of "Ebonics", I go to another line. That's my choice.

And another thing-my original posting talked about the "idiots" that we have to encounter. I have also been through lines at Wal-Mart where there was a compentent worker who whisked me right through with no problem. If you take offense with my comments, perhaps you fall into the first catagory and should look into remedial cashiering.

And as always, have a beautiful Wal-Mart day!

AUTHOR: Dennis - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 23, 2004

I'm amazed at the posts by some on here who think that they're so freakin' smart and how stupid Wal-Mart workers are. Wal- Mart could get better if they paid better, true; BUT I've had people who worked for me at a factory who made twice what a Wal-Mart clerk would make and still couldn't spell or leave a decent note. Blame this on our schools (and the poor math skills).

Customers: How about trying to understand that the clerks can't control anything (almost nothing!) at Wal-Mart. The managers are the ones who staff for two or three cashiers when there are twenty registers. They're shooting for a bonus. Unsually the cashiers are pulled away to zone another area to fill-in for someone sick.

Wal-Mart bigwigs need to take notice. People are fed-up with the low pay and lousy benefits these workers make. And the customers need to have a heart for those who work there.

To Michele from Griswold; how can you expect a cashier to know what all the prices are in the store. How is a cashier to know if you are being overcharged. As for all those employees you people see in the blue vests walking around the store not all of them are trained to check. When you are hired you are hired to work in a specific area and most people who are working on the floor have not been trained to run a register. Maybe instead of shopping at wal-mart and complaining about the service you get you should go save K-MART.

Anyways, so I am not an idiot, and I know how to add and subtract, but do you know how many people that come through my line and when I say "HELLO HOW ARE YOU DOING TODAY", not because it is my job but because I am A NICE PERSON, they don't even bother to respond. I f king hate that SO MUCH, do I EVER hand you your change ON THE COUNTER, NO I have the respect to give you all of you cash and change in your d**n hand. Oh yeah and what about the people that when you card them for cigarettes, they ask to see your ID because they FEEL that YOU don't look old enough to sell them cigarettes, HELLO THEN DON"T COME THROUGH MY KING LINE, I don't wanna deal with ..XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

It's not always the cashier's fault!

AUTHOR: Rachel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 19, 2003

I'm an ex-employee of Wal-Mart. While I never had the misfortune to be a front-line cashier (I worked in the Jewelry Dept...but I also was screwed over by Wally World, but that's a different topic) I've been a cashier for various grocery stores and K-Mart, so I know what a cashier has to deal with.

As for a cashier's purported intelligence, I can't comment on that. There are smart and stupid ones, just like there are smart and stupid people. That'll never change.

But certain complaints that a cashier has to experience day in and day out--the basis for these, I think a lot of people forget, are NOT the CASHIER'S FAULT or DOING. People don't seem to realize that a front-line cashier, unless they get the magican ring of keys, is the very bottom of the totem pole (hell, K-Mart, we were lower than the stockers)...Picture this:

You're a new employee -- you're put at a register with another person who, more than likely, was hired maybe two weeks prior to you (if you're lucky). You get to learn the very basic rudiments of running your station -- just enough to be able to ring up purchases, and cash people out through a payment method. That. Is. It.

Seriously. I don't think any job gets such half-assed training as a front-line cashier in a discount store. I've never worked fast food, though. So basically, we're up there alone (I think the average training period is three days), we don't know anything about policy right off the bat, and we dont (this is important) know ANYTHING about ANYTHING ELSE IN THE STORE.

Everything we know, we learn the first time someone brings it up. I bet this is true for all Wal-Marts, I know it's true for the four I and family/friends have worked at: communication between management and employees STINKS. It's NONEXISTENT. We don't know s**t, because nobody tells us s**t.

So if a price is wrong, or something is gone or the cashier doesn't have an answer, don't be so quick to blame her/him, because more than likely, they were never, ever told about it.

And lastly, IT IS NOT OUR FAULT THERE ARE 3 CASHIERS DURING RUSH HOUR. We can't call up a cashier who's pulling stock or in other departments. (at my store, the people who got to put away all the 'lost' stock brought up to the front were front-line cashiers) So don't yell at us, yell at management. It's their d**n policy. They always understaff then. Don't ask me why.

IF YOU THINK BEING A CASHIER AT WAL-MART IS EASY---YOU DO IT!!

AUTHOR: D - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 18, 2003

First, to the people out there that say ALL of the cashiers at Wal-Mart are idiots: I am an EX-CASHIER, why, because I got burned out on being treated like crap by management, supervisors, and loud, crass, hypocritical, jerks who think THEY know the best, more efficient way to be a cashier. That kind of person: you know, the ones who do EVERYTHING right and can't stand other people because the don't do anything right!

"THESE RUDE, MOUTHY, KNOW-IT-ALLS, ARE THE ONES THAT WOULDN'T MAKE IT LONGER THAN A MONTH AS A CASHIER--ESPECIALLY AT WAL-MART."

Go try to work at a place that treats you like a number instead of a human being. Work for s**t, as far as wages are concerned, (after 4 yrs. I was making under $7.50!). Work for a place that advertises "FAMILY, FAMILY", (yeah, blah, blah), and ask for a day off 4 months in advance for a family function just to have the schedule be put up late, (AGAIN), and be scheduled to work that day anyway. After a while of this kind of treatment, you just stop giving a s**t.....

...about the job, the other employees, even the customers. Now that I'm no longer there, the only thing that I miss is my regular customers! The ones that came in every day or every week, the ones that understood what having a bad day meant, the ones I could joke and laugh with while I rang them up, and the ones that after a short period of time would ask ME how my kids were doing! They were like extended family. I would say that I also miss the other cashiers that I use to work with, but there are maybe FIVE left--TALK ABOUT TURNOVER!!

NOW IN DEFENSE OF THE CASHIERS:

LAY OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't you ever had a person gripe at you about something you had no control over? It gets you upset, flusterred, pissed. Have a person do that and then hit a wrong key on the register and have to do math in your head!

FLUSTERRED/UPSET/MAD + WRONG KEY =

MADDER/MORE UPSET

MADDER/MORE UPSET + MATH = BRAIN FREEZE/SCREW UP!!

You claim to be good at math, did my equation help explain the situation to you?

If you see that your cashier looks like someone just put her/him through the meat grinder: cut them some slack, it's obvious that they're not having the best day and you being impatient, rude, or yelling at them will only make matters worse. Who will get the worse end of the deal if you treat the cashier badly, YOU MIGHT!

Are you one of those customers that like to throw your credit card down on the counter in a huff, or better yet, throw it at the cashier?

Be glad I wasn't your cashier! Hit you? NEVER!

Verbally lash out? NEVER! You know the deactivators that we have to run items like watches, boom-boxes, etc. across. Well, they are magnetic! Any time a customer treated me like I was beneath them, not just a little attitude, you know, totally being a jack-a*s!

Foul language, attitude, etc. Well, after they'd throw their credit card either at me or on the counter--sometimes with such force that it would slide across the counter and onto the floor, I'd pick it up and swipe the card and then, until I gave them their card back--along with their receipt, I'd lay it, (ever so gently), on the DEACTIVATOR!!!!!!!!

Talk about slowing them down whenever they use that card next!! Next time, be nicer to your cashier, you just never know who's read MY article.

Now I'll end this the same way I'd end a transaction with the WORST customer I've ever dealt with:

"Thank you, you have a nice day now."

The store I work for, not Walmart, recently was trying to hire several people to fill vacant positions. On one day we went through 60 applications. You know how many actually passed the math test, idiot test and drug screen? Out of 60 applicants we ended up with 3 new employees!!!

The math test is very simple "make change" problems, the idiot test is basically asking if you would steal from the company and if you are a drunk would you be able to stay sober long enough to show up for work. Its called the idiot test because only an idiot would fail to choose the correct answers.

There really are stupid people out there. The best one was when we called one applicant to come in for an interview at 10:00am, his reply was "Thats a little early, could we make it around 2:00pm". Circular file!!!!

When you see a cashier having a hard time, smile and be patient. If you see a cashier is new, smile and ask how their day is going. A little compassion for your fellow human being can go a long way. When I used to shop a Walmart I remember one day I was having a bad day. The cashier smiled and thanked me for shopping at Walmart. It brightened my day, plus she was young and cute. That happened over 15 years ago and I still remember it. I don't shop there, or any big box store, anymore because of how the companies treat their employees. If you think that the cashiers are idiots speak with your wallet, shop elsewhere.

The answer to it all

I have a suggestion--I am a "mature" lady and I need a good job. Maybe, since I am not a "teenager", (which some of you called stupid) I can handle the job. I am very qualified, as a matter of fact, I may be over qualified, but, it would be an experience I probably would enjoy. I love people in general and I have handled a lot of "customer service". Do you think I need to go for it????? Maybe I can decide which side is lacking in the intelligence department, huh??

Just a rebuttal on the Pay - to courticy statements

AUTHOR: Erich - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 08, 2003

I would just like to add that the amount an employee cares is directly proportional to the payment recieved for these hours. Also, the length of time the cashier or employee has spent at the job has a huge effect on the enthusiasm of the employee.

Oft times it has been stated by an employee at such low paying jobs: "They dont pay me enough to care about that" Which is exactly the case. You would not slave for 9 hours straight having to deal with incompetent managers, mean and roudy customers, and lazy coworkers for just barely enough to take your family out to dinner that night and gas to get to the resturant. Think of that next time you deride an employee like this, most of them are just working their way through an education so they can become the rich people of the world, instead of the low class slobs who "shop" and theive at the stores of their employment.

A few points I would like to make... Wal-Mart cashier

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 30, 2003

Well, just as it happens to be, I also am a Wal-Mart cashier, and I have a few points to make. [1)Just because she had to count on her fingers dont mean that the whole d**n companie's cashiers are stupid, and I dont see why you have a big problem with someone counting on thier fingers. [2)The cashiers themselves do not charge prices, they are stored on the store's computer, and when a UPC is scanned, the corrisponding number is looked up in the system, and added to the transaction, so your APPLES having the wrong price in the COMPUTER had NOTHING to do with the so called "stupid Cahier" [3) The cashiers are not the stupid ones, the customers are, ya know why? cus they have no idea how things work, and how things are done, also, many of them have NO respect for people that are serving them. You think that we HAVE to kiss your a*s, but if i get one of you type of people in my line, I can, and will refuse you, and make you go to a different register, and just to let you know, if you decide to get out of hand, we can kick you out, so don't mess with us. I live by the simple fact that the customer is ALMOST ALLWAYS WRONG!!! Here's my contcat info {{Cashier Rob, Wal-Mart Store 2399, Manchester New Hampshire.

Customer Service isn't what it used to be.

AUTHOR: Tracy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 31, 2003

It seems that Customer Service is dead. I am talking everywhere, Walmart on up to the stores in the malls.

It doesn't matter what you get paid, whether it is minimum wage or not. The new age people that are working now do not have a clue as to what customer service is about. We all work hard for our money, ALL OF US. It doesn't matter if any of us have had a bad day or not, use some simple and common consideration for folks, smile, toss a few jokes out here and there, and everyone will begin to smile and have a better day.

I have been to stores, where as the clerk has started to ring up my purchases, I say hello, and they never even initiate eye contact with me, let alone acknowledge my greeting. I have also encountered problems with the math problems as well. But that is where I joke and smile, and try to help them out. We have all had very long days where at the end we all seem like we have dain bramage, and only have 2 working brain cells left, 1 being lost and the other is out looking for it. Come on folks, lets get back to the original post here.

The gentleman was arrested, even after showing a receipt. Now, not knowing all the details from the in store security officers, I can only say this. Sometimes these security officers can start a riot effect when they "think" they have a hot lead. They get all worked up thinking they are going to bust a good one, so that they go about things in somewhat of an "un-professional manner".

They should have called the cashier in and looked closer at the receipt. The abbreviated names for items on the receipts are not all that easy to understand at times either.

Either way, something needs to change and the only way to change things is by going about them in a smart manner and getting the right people to be our sounding boards for the fight for our rights as well as the workers. In this time when unemployment rates are so high, people that are college educated are taking any job, even WalMart, to get buy on until things get better.

Good luck to the people who have been damaged by all this.

quite a few are. i go to walmart about 3-5 times a week, the prices are usually the best, they are open 24 hrs and i like to shop @2am. however, 2 recent visits come to mind. the first, my buddy and i were purchasing a glass door bookshelf for his mom, these things weigh about 50lbs. they were set up on a display in the main isle. on the other side of the display they were using 3ft tall x 6in wide plastic fish tanks to brace the heavy boxes. anybody want to guess what happend next? you got it, we took the top box, the one behind fell onto the fish tanks and most of the display fell over. then somebody came to help. next i was in the electronics dept. looking for a set of hotwheels cars that were packaged w a dvd or video. this display was 2 ft in front of the electronics desk. the dept manager(thats what his tag said anyway) had no idea what i was talking about. i had just bought 1 set about 2 weeks before, they were a good deal and i wanted to get the rest of the sets. he even went so far as to tell me that i had bought them in a different store, that walmart never carried them, that if they were hotwheels they would be in toys, etc. well after looking in the toys, i found single cars packaged, but not the ones w the videos. i do still have the receipt btw, so i'm relativly certain that i bought them at wm haha along w the fact that my 12yo son, my buddy and his 14yo nephew all bought them at the same time. i also don't like that about 50% of the time, the stuff on display is not in stock, i have checked all the sores in my area (about 5 in 15 min driving)for a ceiling fan that they all have on display, but not in stock. ps the above incidents happend during normal bus hrs, not late at night. the night crew at the wm i frequent most often is usually quite helpful

No No No noooo - not ALL Associates!

AUTHOR: Mich - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 31, 2003

Pjai In defense of myself, I hope I didn't come across and say that all WalMart employees are idiots. I personally did not intend for it to come out I that manner. I am just expressing my feelings on the fact that I have witnessed SOME employees (actually in numerous places, not just WalMart) who lack the basic customer service, math, sales skills. Please don't take that as all WalMart employees I am not that ignorant! Lol

Places like WalMart, Target, McDonald's, etcplaces where the main focus should be quality customer service and merchandise.sometimes I think corporate forgets that some people need to be taught that. It seems all they are focused on is to get a body out there to man the station and that's it. The rest will fall into place. I think that is a great disservice to both the customer and the employee.

Working for the public can be horrendous. People always think they are right and are always looking to save a penny, no matter what. Many are rude, ignorant arrogant, and need a swift kick in the kazoo. But like not all WalMart employees are fudge for brains, not all consumers are a$$'s either. :o)

My biggest problem, though, was the statement commonly used in defense of bad behavior that they get paid minimum wage. I do not think that should be an excuse. Again, not EVERYONE getting paid minimum wage gives bad customer service - I just wanted to point out that pay rate is not an excuse for bad behavior - on EITHER side of the counter for that matter. I hope that clears that up! :o)

I am sorry if I insulted you, Pjai, or anyone else that works for WalMart and/or other cashiering/clerk position. I didn't mean to come across in a negative manner to all. It was directed towards the people that stand around in these places (mostly teenagers) and do nothing. When asked to do something they pout, ignore you and look the other way. I have had my change messed up numerous times, in addition to rude comments and or silly, unnecessary behavior. No, not from every WalMart employee but a majority of the teenage employees of the WalMart near my home.

By the way .. if I were choking on a silver spoon in my mouth, don't let me fool ya ..

I can bet you mine and other's spoons were bought from WalMart :o)

calling all Walmart associates stupid are the idiots

AUTHOR: Pjai - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 30, 2003

I hate stupid people, and I would have to say that the people writing in to this forum calling all Walmart associates stupid are the idiots. My sister works part-time at Walmart and she is far from being unintelligent. She not only raises two babies on her own, but is putting herself through college.

People make mistakes and I'm pretty sure none of you are Einsteins. How dare you come on here and show your a*s, like your Sh*t don't stink either. Take the silver spoon that you are obviously choking on out of your mouths and realize that it aint easy working at Walmart for People like you....and you d**n sure don't get paid enough to deal with people like you.

Yes, some of the people at Walmart work there because it is the best job they could get, but at least they are not on welfare spending your money. At least they took some initiative to get off their butts and do something for themselves. You had a bad day....so?

Get over it and stop crying like a baby. If you didn't have a bad day and it "happens all of the time" Get in your high and mighty car and go to some fancy store. You don't have to shop there. Just because people get paid 6.50 an hour doesn't mean that they have to put up with every and anything. So in closing if you don't like the service don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.

Poor Pay Does Not Justify Poor Service!

AUTHOR: Michele - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 20, 2003

One thing that annoys me about this and many other posts on this site is the common phrase: What do you expect from people who get paid minimum wage. I expect them to do the job they are getting paid for! Minimum wage does not mean minimum service! Should I ask the cashier how much she makes so I can determine if I want to complain to the manager that she has over charged me or that she was rude? I do not think that a person's hourly wage should be an excuse for bad service. Whether they are getting paid $6.00 or $60.00 an hour I expect the same courteous, professional, prompt service.

I do hold management mostly responsible for not training or educating their employees. There should be a basic math, communications, and customer service skills test before hiring cashiers, services reps, etc. I, too, have been a victim of an uneducated, rude, and ignorant cashier but I felt it was pointless to complain to management for the simple fact that it is obviously accepted behavior. The issue wasn't so great that a complaint was severely necessary, so I let it go but the simple fact still remains it doesn't matter if that girl was a single mother of 12, working her way through college, and had a flat tire on the way to work to make her $5.50 an hour.she has no right to be rude, ignorant, and unprofessional.

To wrap this up my BIGGEST complaint about WalMart is this .

At the Super WalMart in my town there are 25 registers why are there only about 5 open on any given day?? I know I see the little blue vested people toying around the store or in the background . Why do they not open more registers to accommodate the long lines?

Arg! That gets me so mad!

how rude many customers are

AUTHOR: Dennis - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 19, 2003

Just a comment to make about those complaining about Wal-Mart clerks. My wife is a clerk in the electronics department and is extremely bright and polite.

But one recurring comment she makes is how rude many customers are and how stupid they appear to be!

For example: many customers come in looking for a ink cartridge for their PC printer. More than a few don't have a clue as to what model number their printer is or the number on the old cartridge. They just say "I bought it here" and expect the clerks to magically know what they need.

Others will try to bring back old telephones (obviously bought at a yard-sale) with no receipt. And they expect you to just give them a new one, no questions asked! This is happening more and more.

And some idiotic customers will open movies or music CD's and bring them back expecting you to trade them for another. I never had any idea that customers expected Wal-Mart clerks to be experts on everything or be able to know what type of batteries they need, without the customer bringing the some old ones or not even knowing what size they need.

Yes, some clerks are rude and uncaring, but many customers are not only stupid but rude to boot!

Thanks for getting this off my chest.

Wal-Mart has used up all the non-idiots.

POSTED: Tuesday, June 17, 2003

I am a college senior working towards my bachelor's degree. I like to think that I have a pretty good grasp on mathematics and a good amount of common sense.

When I was a cashier at Wal-Mart, I had a few incidents where I probably looked stupid to the customers, not because I could not add or subtract, but because some operation on the register was new to me or difficult to perform. I would like to offer up a reason why people run into so many "idiots" as their cashier:

Wal-Mart has used up all of their non-idiot resources. Being a cashier at Wal-Mart, especially during busy hours, is not an easy job. Now, Wal-Mart will hire just about anyone if they are in need of employees.

They have a huge turnover rate, which is why so many cashiers wear that "new" tag on their badge. Add to that the fact that employees are NOT treated well.

Now remember the fact that as a Wal-Mart employee, you are expected to work when they say, no matter what. A co-worker of mine was often scheduled to work until midnight on one shift when his next shift started at 6 am. Also-- if you know many people who work or have worked at Wal-Mart:

Do you hear lots of GOOD stuff about the place? Or is it quite the opposite?

My point is, employees there are treated as if they are disposable, which, to Wal-Mart, they are. And so any decent, intelligent individual gets pretty sick of their stupid policies pretty quickly. Leaving whom running the registers?? That's right, the idiots.

It's only because the rest of us are smart enough to realize what a horrible place that is to work.

walmart cashiers are idiots

AUTHOR: Kelly - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 28, 2003

I was a walmart employee once. I absolutely hated it. I was a cashier. I was not one of the idiots, but there were many that were. Many couldn't count change or even run the register correctly. It doesn't take a master's degree to any of this.

I also worked the courtesy desk for awhile. It seems funny that if you were "special", managers would come running to help you every two seconds. I was not "special". The managers at walmart usually sit in their little office and do nothing. Sometimes I see them actually walking around the store, but they aren't doing anything.

When I was hired at walmart, they asked me if i was available to work weekends. I was in college at the time, so I told them that I was available every other weekend. Unfortunately, every other meant every weekend to them. I worked every weekend for six months straight. Then I used my vacation for a weekend off, and they still scheduled me a few hours during that weekend. Excuse: too many people wanted the same weekend off. Well I checked around and no one else had requested that weekend off. So I did the only thing I could: I didn't show.

Well, needless to say, a few months later I signed their stupid piece of paper saying that I could never work at another walmart. I am not heartbroken by that fact.

Those of you that have had good experiences working at walmart--I congratulate you. Most everyone I have talked to that are former employees have not.

Think before you speak

AUTHOR: Elle - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 24, 2003

If you had to deal with the stress working at Wal-mart, maybe you'd understand what some of these ex-employees are saying. The reason why the cashiers need help all time time is because the registers prompt the to call on someone every five seconds. They can't even pop their drawer without a manager's approval and a key flick.

These poor cashiers work nine hour days and never get the breaks their entitled to have. If their is anyone to blame it's management. Under staffing and lack of training is not a workers fault. I remembered when I got hired there, they threw me on with a cashier that started two days before me. Instead of finding me a properly trained cashier.

If you have a question there are ten different managers with ten different answers. Being left answerless and to the wolves is a little unbearable. Granted, I have met my share of truly brainless cashiers, and I have pondered how they got hired. But as for many of them, they are angry and anguished over the lack of respect and training they do deserve.

Being told what to do differently everytime you do it, is'nt the way you learn anything. The managers even said," Tell the customer's the policy of the store, if they get upset call us over and we'll take care of it." Now the kicker with that one is, the cashier explains the policy and the manager makes the cashier look stupid by contradicting everything they just said.

I've seen a manager break the law for a customer's happiness. Now, you can't change the tobacco laws right? Well my manager thought it was okay to do it. Selling tobacco taxless and without a price is illegal. I tried to explain this to a customer. My manager came up and decided he'd change the law for her and made me feel stupid for obeying it. When I told him what he did was illegal he said," We'll do anything to make the customer happy."

Now is that good leadership and what you want to show your employees? I don't think so. The next time you go through a cashier's line, have a little compassion. Most of them are struggling to pay their bills and feed their families. And they have to come to Wal-mart and deal with this crap on a daily basis. Just a little trinket for you to think of next time your ignorance gets the best of you.

"You don't have to shop at WalMart...."

AUTHOR: Paula - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 20, 2003

Prices may be better on some items-that's true, but even you have to admit the sheer ignorance that these people in suits possess. Such as totally re-decorating the WalMarts so that once you walk in, you see approximately 40 registers. But I have never seen more than 5 open at a time-with the worst being 2 open during horrid rushes. Can we say "waste of money"? That is money that they could be paying to more competent workers.

And as far as knowing a new WalMart employee cashier, they are normally the ones hemming and hawing-not to mention stumbling on the cash registers, calling over for the manager (or anyone who will listen) for help every 4.03 seconds. I do notice them, and I avoid their lines like the bubonic plague.

I do remember my first job-and I remember how awkward it was. But you don't use that as an excuse to stay stupid for the rest of your life. Normally, a person is suppose to improve with experience-not regress into a slobering, withering, shell of a cashier.

If you take offense to this, most sincerely apologies are in order-but that is only if you personify the characteristics that are described here. If you are a highly intelligent WalMart worker-congratulations..I would demand a raise for being in short supply. Use that to your own advantage.

As for reading more on this site for a story about me...nah..don't think so. But I do appreciate your suggestion for reading materials in my spare time.

#5 UPDATE EX-employee responds

You don't have to shop at Wal-Mart

AUTHOR: Michelle - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 19, 2003

I'm an ex-employee and I don't ever remember taking long lazy brakes. I would work nine hour shifts. I would get a fifteen minute break in the first four hours of my shift. I would get a hour for lunch which was suppost to be half way trough my shift but was late on several occasions because we were so busy. One more fifteen minute break before the end of my shift. I know some people think that may be alot but it's what is required by law.

I've heard alot of people talk about how they think all Wal-Mart employees are stupid but the attention and the low prices you get are better than you get at any other store. Have you ever payed attention to wether or not the employee is new ar not. If the employee is new they wear a sign on there badge that says so. Think back to a time when you had a job that had to do with working with the public and how many times a customer has made you feel like an idiot. Maybe you should read more on this web site maybe there's a story about how you had a bad day and looked like an idiot.

I wish I could talk about every time I had to deal with an idiot customer asking me stupid questions because believe me you would incredibly stupid compared to people you have degrated on this web site

All I'm saying is if you have such bad experince's every time you go shopping at Wal-Mart than shop somewhere else.

#4 UPDATE EX-employee responds

The starting wage for most wal-mart cashiers is $6.50 a hour.

AUTHOR: Lisa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 19, 2003

The C.S.M's make a whole $8.00. What do you expect? I took the job as a second job to make extra money for the holiday season but soon noticed that it was a waste of time. I was paying more in childcare to work that job than I was bringing home.So my time there was very short. Simply put, the company "gets what it pays for", I don't have anything negative to say about the cashiers; but the next time your standing in a line and the cashier can't speak english think to yourself if you were that person and you had perfected the english language would you be working at wal-mart? Or when your cashier gives you the wrong change (because there is a lack of simple subtraction and addition) think to yourself, if you had finished school would you choose to work at walmart? Finally, not only does the pay suck at wal-mart they are under staffed most of the time and some cashiers go several hours without a break. So the next time you are in a line facing a tired, over-worked, under-paid cashier and something goes wrong; don't take it out on the cahier because they are giving the company what the company pays for. Write a letter to the company and complain so the company can give you what you are paying for.

#3 Consumer Suggestion

ley's do the math on the welth of the owners of Walmart.

AUTHOR: The Great Thorn - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 25, 2003

Dear Karen and Paula Hiring cheap labor is just one reason that each family member that owns MalMart is worth about 17,000,000,000 That's BILLION.

Let's do the math.

Let's say Sam Walton's kids are all 40 years old.

17 billion dollars each, divided by 40 years is 425 Million bucks a year for each of his kids so far!

For them to stay wealthy, we as consumers MUST deal with the stupid people that Walmart likes to hire as cashiers. Nothing in their employee's heads, nothing in their employee's pocket. CHEAP LABOR!!!!

Not to mention that most Walmart managers are too dam dumb to see when another cashier needs to get off of their long lazy break and open up their register and help shorten the long a*s lines.

Most businesses do not care if consumers have to wait in long lines. The sad thing is after you pay and get out your receipt and head for the door, then to be searched like a common criminal.

I say the next time they ask to search you, ask them if they want you to drop your shorts.

To all of you greedy big companys. Stop being so damm greedy and hire more employees that have something in their head besides marbles.

NOW, the math is DONE!

Agree Totally!

AUTHOR: Paula - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 25, 2003

I agree that the hiring prerequisites are getting a bit slack. I'll even give some examples of my experiences with our local WalMart:

* For a total of $47.35, I gave the cashier a $50 bill. Change? She handed me $47.35.

* I handed the cashier a manufacturer's coupon for a free box of Crayola crayons-with a limit of up to $4.00. The crayons were approximately $2.50 Her repsonse? She charged me $4.00-plus tax. She couldn't understand what the coupon was saying and had to ask three different cashiers in three different lines-holding up the line.

* While at the register, I noticed that the cashier had charged me the wrong price for apples. When I inquired about the error, she spoke Spanish/heavy accented Spanish and I could not understand her. She apparently could not understand me either-as she kept wanting me to repeat what I said. What did I say, you ask? I asked her, "Aren't these apples on sale?".

#1 UPDATE Employee

I HATE stupid people too!

AUTHOR: Gloria - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 06, 2003

In response to remarks by Karen in Albany,N.Y.:

I AM a Wal-Mart cashier (pharmacy) and I am deeply offended by your diatribe. Was your conclusion that ALL Wal-Mart cashiers are idiots and cannot subtract based solely on one transaction and one cashier? Pretty narrow-minded and prejudicial view, isn't it? By the way, does your computer have a spell check function? You may also want to work on sentence construction and grammar. I guess I HATE stupid people also and I see plenty of them every day on your side of the counter. I am sure you are ignorant of the abuse the public dishes out to anyone whose job it is to serve them in whatever capacity.
