This happened to my wife today: she bought some items at Walmart and while leaving the store, another customer whispered to her to check her receipt because she may have been double charged -- sure enough, she was charged twice for a sweater she bought. So maybe an honest mistake, right? happens all the time.

But the weird thing is that the two charges were not together -- so if it was scanned twice by accident, how did the second time appear so much further down? Being that they weren't together, it would be much harder for a casual observer to notice. And very hard for a checker to do "accidentally". When she went back and complained, they credited her card, but didn't give any apology: neither the checker, nor the manager.

Very strange. Could be a "glitch" in the system or could be a conspiracy. Who knows. I'm just saying EVERYONE should CAREFULLY CHECK EVERY RECEIPT when shopping at Walmart. And if this happens to you MAKE A BIG STINK ABOUT IT -- LOUDLY IN THE STORE SO EVERYONE KNOWS. When people are called out enough on these "mistakes", trust me things will change...

P.S. Do a Google search on "Walmart double charge mistakes" and you will see that this does happen a lot.

#5 UPDATE Employee

double charge on receipt

AUTHOR: richard - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, June 02, 2011

TO ALL WM CUSTOMERS;

As an 11 yr employee of WM and the last 5 yrs as a cashier, I will agree sometimes items do ge double charged and it ALWAYS pays for the customer to watch the card reader for what is being scanned and if they see a double charge, tell the cashier and the extra charge can be voided off.
On occassion the bar code scanner reads the items bar code 2 times before the cashier can move the item from the scanner to the bag but ther is no way the cashier can scan the item once, bag it up, and later rescan the same item without taking that item out of the bag. If a pile of items are on the counter next to the scanner, a bar code might be read on an item that is later taken from the pile of items and read again. It most oftem happens when a pile of clothes is placed on the belt/counter near the register scanner.

There is no incentive for a cashier to purposly double charge for an item and place his/her job in peril when a customer returns with the receipt showing the double charge. It just is a mistake which does happen but not a conspiracy to cheat the customer.

Get real and thinks about it!

Honest Mistake

AUTHOR: Brian - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, April 15, 2011

I work for a company that services cash registers and scanners.  Walmart is not one of our clients.  You would be surprised at how far away a scanner can detect and read a barcode.  I've seen scanners read barcodes from 2 feet away.  Could be that the price tag was accidently re-scanned as the clerk was putting the sweater in the bag.  The scanner should have beeped when the barcode was read and the clerk should have caught the mistake.  But if the store was noisy, they may have missed it.  I've never seen a hardware or software glitch cause this problem and I seriously doubt any type of conspiracy.  More likely a mistake by an inattentive clerk.

You said this "And if this happens to you MAKE A BIG STINK ABOUT IT -- LOUDLY IN THE STORE SO EVERYONE KNOWS"

All this would do is make YOU look like an a*s and people would feel sorry for the cashier that has to deal with you. Besides, they would hopefully throw you out.

I don't know what happened but you appear to be an obnoxious person and I would take this report with a grain of salt.

Not possible unless scanned twice

AUTHOR: Aaron - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 15, 2011

The system can't do this unless the item was scanned twice but why would a cashier scan and item, set it to the side, and then scan it again.  I think one of two things.  First this may just be a false report.  I did the google search and this is the first result.  And the others are years part.  So clearly not common.

My second thought if this is true then whatever mistake was done was noticed by the other customer.   Which means had your wife been paying attention she would have likely noticed it.

Double scans do happen but they are almost always right next to each other.

And the system can not do what you are trying to insinuate it did.  It can not add extra changes.  A computer system that did that would be noticed quickly and Wal-Mart would be sued out of business.  Hell the bad press alone would drop their sales within days.  No company would risk this.  Especially not one as big as Wal-Mart with so much to lose.
