Walter E Smithe Furniture Sold me a piece of junk, and wont do anything to make this right, switch and bait warranty from 2yr to 1yr!!! naperville, Illinois

"Dont Waste Your Money! Smithe boasts of quality in their famous commercials.  DON'T believe it.  

If only I could have heard these words before I bought a dining table from them!  I spent a lot of money (more than what a dining table for the kitchen should cost) solely because I was assured at the time of purchase that I was buying something that would withstand normal, daily use for my home.  I was told the table came with a 2 year warranty, and that the table was made of wood.    I was willing to pay more for the quality.boy did I get screwed.  

When the table was delivered, there was damage on one part of the table.  I called and their warranty department sent somebody out to take care of it.  I was convinced that was just a freak defect, and the table would be fine.  After a I had the table for about a year, a started to notice a small speck on the surface that looked like particle board (sawdusty..)  I thought, that I was mistaken, b/c the table is supposedly solid wood.  The small chip has gradually grown into a very noticeable mark on the table and I cant bear to look at the table anymore.  Deep down, I knew the table couldnt really be of the quality I was told, and relied upon, when I purchased the table.  So I called the warranty department, because the table was warrantied for 2 years.  They told me, that the warranty was only for one year, and that they could not repair it for me without me paying extra money.  I was in shock!  I looked through the papers I received when I purchased the table, and of course, there is nothing on the warranty being only 1 year.  I was told it was 2 years, and would expect them to make good on what they say.  But I guess they dont really care about what they sell, as long as they get the sale, and your money.  

My advice, just stay away from WALTER E SMITHE and dont believe them when they try to sell you a lemon.  I made a costly mistake and even though I was impressed with them in the beginning, I was in fact swindled and feel cheated by them.  Im questioning whether the table is real wood, let alone solid wood.  They pulled a switch and bait on the warranty, they probably did the same as to the quality of the table.

I would love to have the table fixed, just so I dont have a daily reminder of how I got SCAMMED. WALTER E SMITHE wont do anything, and all they say is there is nothing they can do.  So much for the great customer service I had at first..I must have been dreaming to think it would last.

Im happy to say, my table is repaired as best as it can be.   The gentleman who came to repair the table was very polite and patiently answered all my questions.  He efficiently did his work, and took great care to make sure he did not make a mess in the kitchen area where he worked.

Once the company was aware of the problem and understood the mistake, they were very gracious about making sure the repair was done.  Thats exactly what customer service is all about, and Im pleased that they have lived up to the expectation.  I will recommend the Naperville Walter E. Smithe Store, to other people, for their management, customer service and their excellent repair people.  There are people who truly care, and try to do the right thing.

I received a call from one of the managers at the store in Naperville and she informed me that someone from the warranty department would give me a call and help me out.  I got a message left on my phone from the warranty department, and she only reiterated what she had said to me before.  So I called the store manager back again and told her.  She escalated the matter and shortly thereafter I received another call from the warranty department...this time saying they would send someone out to repair the table, at no cost to me!  Why the warranty department lady would not resolve this matter initially, just blows my mind.  But I can't hold WALTER E. SMITHE responsible for her actions.  Although the warranty department was adamently refusing to do anything in the beginning, they have turned around and are willing to make things right.  The naperville store for WALTER E SMITHE has lived up to their customer service promise and I feel confident they will repair the defect happily now.  I will update again after the repair is done.
