I recently went off to college. As a way to help out, my parents are providing additional funds and monitoring my bank account of any transactions while I am away at college. Recently while my mom was reviewing my account on-line she saw a charge to my debit card of $12.00. This same charge was occurring per month for the last several months to a company called Shopper After looking in to why I was charged this fee, a representative of Shopper informed me that I have been charged $12.00 per month since February of 2009 when I made a purchase with my debit card on-line from Best Buy. When I made the on-line purchase I was asked if I wanted a 10.00 moneyoff voucher on the purchase that I had selected. I selected yes and when I did I was automatically signed up for a monthly Shopper Discounts membership at a cost of $12.00 per month without my authorization or knowledge. I have paided a total of $264.00 in membership fees to this company without knowing. I called and cancelled the membership and I am trying to get the money refunded.

I don't know which is worse..

I don't know what is worse in this case.

That you are in college and need your parents to "monitor" your bank account.  That you never noticed this charge in almost two years.  Or that your parents who were supposed to monitor your account not noticing you were being charged.

If you complain to your bank they may give you 2-3 months back, but getting more than that will be very hard.  However, there are times that once you complain to the company they agree to refund everything.  Not specifically with this company but it would probably be worth a shot.

Either way think of this as a lesson that could have been a lot more expensive.  First it is necessary to monitor your accounts.  This includes keeping a register of all of your transactions.  This way when you reconcile your account you can verify that every transaction that was posted is one that you made.  Because you didn't "know" about this one it would not have been in your register.  So you could then have contacted the bank as soon as it showed up..not 22 months later.

The second thing is that NOTHING on the Internet is free.  Anytime you enter your Credit Card or personal information you better be 100% sure about what you are agreeing to.  These $10(or what ever discount) will always include signing you up to some "membership".  You will find the terms that this is what you are agreeing to, but it will be in very small fine print.
