Personal savings and checking account started a year ago or so. Made deposit of $250 to open account. Wound up not using the account, so Wells started charging maintenance fees.
When account ran dry, is charging "overdraft fees". Sent acct to collections for about $60 in "overdraft fees".
Customer service rep transferred me to overdraft rep, who stated that my state (Calif) permits them to charge those fees. Claimed that they didn't need to send statement because acct was inactive. Sated that I couldn't speak with manager because the mgr would tell me the same thing.

While the maintenance fees are somewhat greedy, they are disclosed.
It seems outrageous that they would charge 'overdraft' rather than simply closing the account or putting it on hold. Greed and lack of ethics seem the only plausible explanation for these practices.

You hit the nail on the head...

...when you stated "Greed and lack of ethics seem the only plausible explanation for these practices."

Remember..the bank is NOT on your side...they are not a member of your team..it is US against THEM.

I have a Chase account with a very low balance and I rarely use it. I call every so often to ask if I should close the account because I do not use it and do not want to incur any fees for maintenance.

I was told "not to worry" and to keep the account open. So far no unexpected fees.

As far as Wells Fargo..I had no experience with them other then when my Wachovia account was taken over by them. I closed my account due to greed and lack of ethics, standards, morals or any sense of customer service on Wachovias part..and I should not be too surprised by your report since Wells Fargo was willing to acquiesce a failing dud like Wachovia.
