Last week I paid my auto insurance using a Wells Fargo Visa/debit card. The clerk handling the transaction made an error and overcharged. That will be detailed further in another report.
I drove immediately to the bank to ask if a stop payment could be made. I explained the situation and waited for about an hour while the manager made some phone calls to see what would be done. The reponse finally came: NO, the vendor is responsible.
At this time I pointed out that the charge was in excess of the amount authorized, and no signature was obtained for the transaction. This also caused my account to be overdrafted.
Shortly before leaving, another clerk had tried to sell me into a line of credit, and handed me a brochure with instructions for credit management. It's ironic to be handed such a thing from a bank which is automatically paying out unauthorized transactions without any means of resolution.
Are other account holders aware of how insecure their money is?

Yes of course. I had spoken to the branch manager in person in addition to calling the number and checking the web site. This forum is here for when those methods DON'T work.
This has been resolved after hassling both the merchant and Wells Fargo for a week. Part of the problem is that both businesses are using processing centers located elsewhere, resulting in problems with communication, authority, and process flow.

Contact Wells Fargo's corporate customer service line listed on their website and tell them that they need to remove the charge, since it was one of their employees errors. That number is 1-800-869-3557.
If they refuse to help you, warn them that you will contact the Texas Dept of Banking if they don't dismiss the charge. If you end up really having to contact the Texas Dept of Banking you can do so at http://www.banking.state.tx.us/ or 1-877-276-5554
I have been using Wells Fargo for many years and have had no problems, so hopefully they will resolve it for you.
Good luck!

Forgot one thing, the bank did submit an inquiry to investigate the charge. This may take up to 10 business days. I'm told that "any overdraft charges associated with this transaction will be removed" if the vendor reverses the transaction.
