My husband drove for Westside for over 8 years. We live in Ohio, but as his spouse I went on the road with him a lot. I had numorous oppertunities to meet the Iowa work staff. They became an extended family to us. I also know that they place family first and foremost.I know because when I had to have emergency surgery they got my husband home and told him to call them when HE was ready to go again. In other words, when he felt okay about leaving me.

When my husband was home ill and almost died, the workers at Westside went above and beyond to help with all the financial things dealing with insurance and stuff so that I could focus on my wonderful husband. When my husband became disabled and had to be let go, they did not want to lose him and they told him that straight out.

I can also tell you that every worker that I know at Westside are beautiful inside and out. They treat you like family, not like employees. My husband always got in good miles because he was willing to work hard, odd hours to get the job done without accidents, tardiness, or breakage. If you are willing to put in the hours, then Westside will give you the miles. If you only want to work 8 hours a day, are late all the time, and get bad reviews from the shippers and recievers then you should expect a repremand of less miles to encourage you to act like decent human beings on the road.Once you straighten up they will increase your milage.

I would do the same as an employer. Westside will give the drivers more chances though than any other company out there and they will make you aware of what you need to change in order to do better. Other companies will expect you to just know on your own what you are doing wrong. The benefits that Westside offer are good benefits. I shold know as I, as a spouse, reaped the rewards with my husband.

Now, lets take a look at logic:

1) The complaintant in the original post spouts off by attacking people's looks and children. I say, "shame on him! He shold know better!" A real complaintant would give facts and figures, not attack individuals and their innocent children.

2) There is no offer of specifics to prove what is being said.

3) This ex-employee is obviously frustrated, but at who really? Westside for having and following their ethics, or himself for failing to do well and maintain his employment?

My husband and I BOTH miss Westside and wouold go back to the company in a new york minute. This guy obviously did not get to know the Westside staff or he would know that they are wonderful people that one would be proud to call their own family.

I go by the handle Backbone and I have been driving for West Side Transport for about 3 years. I must say that when I started driving here I thought it was a mistake because of the sliding pay scale but once I got a relationship with my dispatcher I was amazed at how well the system works. They got rid of the sliding pay scale program and now I make .39 cents per mile and get some bonuses from time to time. I read some other posts about the company screwing over drivers but they are just mad cause they can't hack it out on the road. I enjoy getting home weekly and sometime every other weekend and my dispatcher is a wonderful lady. Sometimes the freight is a little slow but I more than make up for it on the good weeks. If I have one other complaint it would be the office is a little slow sometimes but they seem like they might be slightly under staffed so I'm patient. Keep it painted side up road warriors and watch out for Backbone when your on I-80.

Tim Whitney has been the safety director of Westside Transport since the early 90's and has three DWI's in his personal vehicle all before 1994.  My ex-partner and I use to run team with Westside and to this day I do not understand why Don allowed him to keep his job as the safety director.  Its do what I say, not what I do in Tim's world. 

If I can fine any open records laws in Iowa I will post the facts here so you all can see this is one safety director that doesn't walk the walk.

I also worked for Westside Transport several years ago. I was fired after I was toldthem Ihad cancer to get me off their medical. After my termination, they had put down that I quit and unemployment was not an option. After a two year fight with the EEOC, I find out their claim was I quit for no reason and never told them I had cancer. I guess the chemo sessions were all in my mind. Well, to make a long story short, I could have sued and won but it turns out that I was able to get another job, I would not win any money even though they broke the law.
