I used to think that WGU was the best online college. I received my teaching degree from them.I decided to continue my education so I decided to go back for my masters in ESL. At first all was well. I did have to take a basic class that I had already taken which I thought was really useless but I finished it in two days and was ready to move on. The mentor that I was given was very annoying and talked about her church activities more then helping me progress in my degree. I asked for another mentor and they granted my request with a lot of complaining on my part.

When I began working with my new mentor I was really able to progress and only had to finish my Capstone project. One requirement was a praxis test  that was need to graduate.  I took this test but did  not pass it the frist time . My mentor told me that it would be fine and that I did not need to  take it again because it was not required in my state. Then one day my mentor calls and tells me that I really need to finish my capstone by the end of July 2010 because she would no longer be working for the school.

I told her that I could not be finished by then because I had not compiled my data. She really did not tell me why she was leaving and I thought that I would be okay with another mentor. Wrong, I got the same mentor that I had at the beginning. I thought it would be okay, wrong again, she was no help to me in anyway and she was very mean and condescending because of the past. I finished my capstone, thought I could graduate , and then she tells me that I had to take the Praxis test again. I explained what my previous mentor had told me and she said that it did not matter, I still had to take the test. I was so angry, I called the school and talked to many people and they all said I had to take the test.

So I paid WGU one years tuition to take a test that I do not need  in my state  to receive an up grade of my teaching certificate and they did nothing to help me. My mentor did not supply me with any courses that would help me pass the test. I was not given any encouragement or feedback from her , I was only told when I did not pass it again that it was hard and that others had problems passing it too. So to date I have paid over $500.00 to take a test that I have to pass but, was not given the tools from WGU to do so. I feel that they really need to look at this requirement and either lower the test requirement or provide better courses so that people can pass the test. I would also love to be reimbursed for the years  tuition that I paid and did not take any courses. I will never recommend WGU to anyone.

PRAXIS exam

AUTHOR: TruthSayer - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 27, 2011

I agree with the other poster.  I wouldn't want her teaching any of my children either.  The PRAXIS is used to determine a teacher's knowledge of teaching, as well as the subject being taught.  And this idiot has failed it TWICE ?????  She doesn't have a clue !  Exactly WHAT do you teach, Kindergarten ????

Of course she claims that she is a very good teacher, but she is quite obviously deluding herself.  How can you possibly trust someone to teach a subject that they have FAILED, not once, but TWICE ?????  And, NO, you shouldn't need a course to teach you how to pass the PRAXIS. You pass it by knowing the subject material.  That's why you go to college - you learn the subjects and learn to teach the subjects.  You have no one to blame but yourself for your failures.

And, thank goodness you would never be allowed to teach in my state, as we require a person to pass the PRAXIS before they ever set foot inside of a classroom.

WGU Praxis Requirements

AUTHOR: Western Governors University - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 27, 2011

WGUs ELL (English Language Learning) programs require students to take and pass the Praxis II 0361, as well as any state-mandated exams. The exams are not part of the program requirements, but are considered graduation requirements that must be met before the university will recommend students for licensure or certification. Because WGU follows standard practices and requires students to take and pass Praxis and state-mandated exams on their own, the cost of preparation materials and the exam attempts are not covered by tuition.

However, students who have completed all of their other degree requirements are not required to pay tuition while they prepare for and take the Praxis and state-mandated exams.

We regret that this student received some misinformation regarding these requirements and encourage him/her to contact WGU Student Services to see if we can help her resolve her issues.

Funny neither one of you even understand the issue

AUTHOR: WGU''s ESL program is a joke - (United States of America)

First of all this is not about teaching anything. This is about the fact that WGU is not helpful to their students. I do not want people to know what state that I live in and I do know my state requirements for the Praxis test. I am the one who told my mentor that it was not required in my state. Also I am a teacher and a very good one, I have many certificates to prove it. Maybe both of you should learn what you are talking about before you comment on something. I do not teach English, nor will I ever. Maybe you people are the ones that need to go back to WGU. Maybe they can make you understand that which you do not.

Praxis

AUTHOR: Diogenes - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, December 26, 2011

Indeed.  I certainly wouldn't want you teaching my child.  And I certainly hope that English is NOT your area of expertise.  However, considering that you TWICE failed the Praxis, it may well have been your major course of study.  Go back and take English 101 again.  You need it.

You don't say which state you're from. It seems to me that anyone who has a degree in education should be smart enough to go to the Praxis website, search under the laws for their state, and then determine for themselves which test is required.

If you can't pass the Praxis after two attempts, perhaps you should consider another line of work.
