In March of 2014 I bought a Whirlpool microwave (Model # WMH31017AB-1). In December 2015, one of the door switches was accidentally pushed in while the door was open. When I pulled the switch out, there was a “pop” and a burning smell. The high voltage transformer and the diode were burned out because of a flaw in the design. The cost to replace parts and have it repaired is equal to or greater than a new microwave.
I wrote a letter to Whirlpool. They called me on the phone and left a voicemail saying, "I do appreciate the letter and I certainly do apologize for the concern you experienced with this unit. I have documented about a complaint on your behalf in regards to the failure. Unfortunately we would not be able to assist financially with repair of the unit as it is outside the manufacturer's warranty."
I was forced to buy a new microwave less than 2 years after the first. I've now paid twice as much because the design didn't have a safeguard that would prevent this from happening. Instead of doing the right thing, they are hiding behind the fact that it was out of warranty.

Door Switch?

I am trying to picture what this "door switch" you are talking about is, and how exactly it was "accidently" pushed in. Then how exactly did pulling it out blow a transformer.
But that not withstanding, I haven't seen any warranty that covers "accidental" damage. It covers Mfg Defects and by your own admission you are the one who caused this damage. So even if it was under warranty it wouldn't have been covered. Having it out of warranty just makes the resolution a lot simpler.
Now, of course you will say that it was caused by a design flaw that they should have known and accounted for. So I guess if someone decided to cook something on high for 10 minutes that should have been for 1 minute and ruined the inside they should be accountable to that because they didn't design some sort of cut-off device....right?
