I purchased some yogurt from Woodman's, opened it up and ate some, and preceeded to get sick. I noticed the expiration date was December 16, 2005. Today was February 6, 2006. I called Woodman's to complain. I talked to the produce manager, who said he found it hard to believe the yogurt was outdated. He said that yogurt doesn't get old, he'd eat outdated yogurt anytime. So all he said was too bad!!

Expired Yogurt

AUTHOR: Michaela - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 08, 2007

With some foods, such as yogurt, the expiration date is more of a "freshness guarantee date". Meaning that if you buy a container of yogurt and consume it before that date, the manufacturer guarantees its quality.

According to a study by the University of Maryland, yogurt such as in your situation is no less safe than it was the day it was made. It may contain less of the L.Acidophilous bacteria, but should not make a person sick.

Many grocery stores sell expired and "close-date" yogurts and mark them as such- usually with a steep discount. I myself routinely buy such yogurt and have yet to get sick.

If the package was compromised though, all bets are off. Any dairy product is subject to spoilage if the package had a leak or incomplete seal. If your container of yogurt had a leak or was not sealed properly, you would have been sick eating it even if you had bought it a month earlier.

When buying any dairy products, you should carefully examine the lids/caps/seals. One easy test is to very gently aqueeze the item. If air or product comes out, the seal is bad. If you see any tearing or holes in the packaging, don't buy that item. In fact, you could do the store and other consumers a favor by making sure to give a leaking container to a store employee or manager to dispose of.
