I worked for Marten Transport for three weeks and it has ruined my driving career. please don't make same mistake i did.

Marten has put on my DAC I have an unsatisfactory safety record. I can't understand how three weeks can over shadow twelve and a half years of driving experience. I have not been able to get employment because of this.

Marten said I had an incident. I reported it to Marten, took pictures, did everything that was required of me by DOT and Marten. Police were not called, no tickets were issued. I reported to Marten did not hit truck in question. There was no visable damage or transfer.

I called Krissi in Human Resources, three days after I was terminated and asked for copies of pictures I took. was informed they had not been developed. That means Marten terminated me without looking at all evidence. I called Krissi a few days later and asked for copies again was informed by Krissi that the pictures were property of Marten Transport and was not allowed to send me copies.

Marten made me pay for bus ticket home, repay orentation pay and motel expences while in orentaion, also shipment of personal property. Marten took almost $500.00 out of my last pay check.

I requested a dispute with safety department. It took two months to get it. On 5-08-09 at 14:30 Marten called and the saftey department let me tell my side of the story.{or so they call it.} When I was trying to explain my side the lady on phone I could hear laughing. So, they were not taking conversation seriously. Also asked for copy of the picures I took and was informed that Marten never recieved them. What information am I to believe?
Either they developed them or they never recieved them.

I have read somewhere Marten has an 80% turn over in employment of drivers. I WONDER WHY?????

#2 UPDATE Employee

What kind of incident or accident?

AUTHOR: Deborah - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 06, 2009

Okay, without knowing exactly what is on your USIS/DAC report, I'm doing a lot of guessing here, so please bear with me...

What exactly happened in the incident/accident in question?  Had there been any other incidents or accidents during the brief employment with Marten?

As for the $500 you're out, well, you singed the agreement to repay Marten the costs associated with your hiring process.  Had you not, you would have been sent home, albeit via Greyhound, at Marten's expense, and owed nothing.

A couple of things...

It is company policy since 2007 that any driver found at fault in an incident or accident within 12 months of initial employment is terminated, for cause, regardless of the amount or circumstances.  This was the result of our safety rating going from very good to extremely poor in the last few months of that year, mostly accident related.  They've also cracked down hard on log violations and falsifications, and drivers failing to do vehicle inspections.  Marten almost went out of business due to an influx of drivers who were killing people, driving drunk, failing to do proper daily vehicle inspections, and serious log violations.

Second, Marten does accept (as do the courts, contrary to rumor control) DIGITAL pictures.  I opt to not use the provided film-based camera, mainly because they often fail, but also because I want copies of all pictures for my own records.  Digital cameras are fairly cheap nowadays, and you can even email pictures directly to Risk Management (which they now prefer).  Every trucker should have a digital camera (which is tax deductible), if for no other reason than to cover their own butts.

Third, why were you dealing with the Safety department at this point?  The matter was up to Risk Management to deal with.  Safety was probably laughing in frustration, trying to figure out why they were being forced to deal with something they have no authority over.  Either that, or something you were telling them, or perhaps your attitude, caused their reaction?  I don't know, I wasn't there.

And, finally, if Marten's turnover rate is only 80%, that is well below the industry average.  It really isn't relevant to the issue you are bringing up, either.

I would stay way from companies that use DAC reports as part of there hiring screening. But with that said, the company I went with after Marten does use DAC here in Minnesota but they totally understand the history and actions of Marten so they took will take the report with a grain of salt.

So my advise, its not totally helpless. Just either but upfront with the person on the phone about what happened (be the first to hit them with the bad news) and they are more likely to believe you first and/or avoid carriers that use DAC as a tool in their screening process.

I have been driving for nearly 18 years and I know what they can do with DAC so if I know the DAC will be used, I avoid the carriers with DAC for a few years. Works everytime.

Don't be down, there are plenty of carriers out there that are looking for great drivers with that kind of experience. Hell this company is always looking for drivers (just not from Texas - sorry) but you will find one soon enough.
