My Story is similiar to the others here, I was cold called by this firm that I thought was out of Minnesota but turns out they are in Baltimore, maybe . . .

They had to call me several times and really work me as I rarely send money to someone who calls me. I often purchase things on the internet, or from a catalog but in those instances I have made the call, ususally know the seller, and pay with a credit card for its protections. I just don't trust cold calls.

Work Site Center (which is now apparently Work Info Center, www.worksitecenter.com redirects to www.workinfocenter.com) offered themselves as providers of leads for Construction/Handyman/Landscape/Clean up services, on a Nationwide Basis. They told me the Bulk of the work would be in Foreclosed Properties being put back into the market. WSC had working relationships with Banks all over the country and these banks depended on WSC for the names of local Contractors. (At this point calls to local Banks Real Estate Managers would have the correct course of action). Most of the jobs would be small, $250 to $650, but the Bank would supply all material needed for the work. That should have been another red flag, why would a bank manager order material rather than the Contractor performing the work?

My Business is a small General Contracting Firm, though I tend to land large Site Development Constrcution Management contracts that can last a year to eighteen months or more. I had just completed such a project and the thought of having some small window/door replacement, dry rot repair projects to fill in around the edges seemed smart.

WSC sales agents originally told me that their service was free, they got paid from the Banks, and the only cost was the $99 background check, which would be refunded if I failed the check. That should have been another red flag, if an outside firm performed the background check and I failed, why would the fee be refunded? The check was performed.

Then at some point I noticed on their website that the refundable background check fee was $69 and there was a registration fee of $30, this was explained away as a new trainee sales agent mispeaking. Uh huh . . .

Depite my misgivings I signed up, which was yet another lesson that you need to listen to those little voices in your head, they are there for a reason. I passed the backgrpound check in late February and started receiving leads in Early March. Every week three or four leads. Not one yet on a Foreclosed property, but all private property owners looking for low budget Contractors and even Handymen.

No Phone Numbers, Addresses, or even communities of the projects. Simply email addresses to contact the owner. My tip off of a scam was when I started getting the email postmaster messages of undeliverable email address. I'd say seven out of ten have been undeliverable, and not a response from the ones that got through.

On their new Work Info Center website McAfee Site Advisor warns; "found potential suspicious behavior on this site which may pose a security risk. Use with caution".

So they only got me for $99, but that would be handy in my wallet, and the work would have been nice too.
