I have also been a victim of this deceptive school. Upon looking for a good way to expand my horizons, I stepped into the Wujido Institute and was immediately directed to Mark Screiber. He began describing the "best work out of my life" and the "secrets of shaolin" In fact he touted classes that could only be enrolled in if an invitation was extended... It was easy to stir our imaginations. Then the first of many deceptive practices went into effect. He asked us to fill out a "preliminary assesment" so as to better understand what classes we should enroll in. This was actually the contact information side of the actual contract to enroll! I wasn't alarmed though and continued listening to Mark's spiel. I asked to see the class in progress and he said that was not possible. That in fact the classes were highly secretive and the "Master" would not allow the secrets of the class to get out. His excuse was rationalized by saying they did not want other schools to see what they were teaching. This did not sit well with me but I continued to fall victim... Within 20 minutes of my first time ever walking into the studio, myself and a friend were enrolled for a whopping 18 months! Our joy was short lived and after only 20 out of 288 classes we were moving out of town. It was only fair that since we would not be attending any further classes after only just beginning, that any fair business with moral conviction would release the parties from the contract! Talking to Mark did not help, he said it was out of his hands, and talking to Dr. Harkins was like talking to a board. He said he would have nothing to do with financial decisions. He insisted that the value of the contract was fulfilled after only 5 classes... I don't see how.. The classes themselves are a scam, after always starting late, we did pure areobic excercises for a good 25 minutes(I can pay the local gym $20 for that!) so then we actually only get 30 minutes of martial art instruction... and not by the Dr. Harkins! We are taught by other students, until Dr. Harkins decides to show up... sometimes he is there for 20 minutes, sometimes for only 5 minutes and a couple of times not at all! Then at the end of the class he lines everyone up for a "question and answer"... this is nothing more than a self-glorifying session for Dr. Harkins. It is made very clear that the only thing he wants to hear during this time is praise for what he taught... "Thank you for teaching me humility..." The couple of times people actually tried to raise a question, they were immediately shot down by Dr. Harkins as not paying attention and to only address those questions during class... (I thought this was class? and I thought this was question and answer?) So how can 5 classes be worth the full contract when we are in fact entitled to 288 classes. Any business owner that takes cowardice in confronting financial issues of his own business and in fact takes money he knows he does not deserve is a scam artist! He insists on taking money from contracts from students who are not even attending classes! Sure he can say its the students responsibility to attend classes...but not when the student has a legitimate reason to "NEVER" attend a future class. My friend and I are out 5 grand and it was the biggest waste of my life and money I have ever made without a doubt! The contract is completely one sided. I even seeked legal advice, and I had a case against them for fraudelent credit activity. Unfortunately there is a time limit for bringing the case to court and I had already passed the deadline. __NOTE TO FUTURE LITIGATORS__ Both Mark and Dr. Harkins use the term "credit purchase" "We are extending you credit for these classes.", "This is a credit purchase contract" The contract however has none of the credit disclosures REQUIRED by the state of Texas. It is therefore an invalid contract in the state of Texas. Unfortunately, there is a very small timeline to seek damages against credit contract disputes. These were my Points of Dispute: o We were not allowed to view classes but were convinced by sales associate to join. We took a good faith trust that classes were worthwhile and contract was fair. o We had to fill out the contract there on the premises and were told we could leave at anytime. o We gave notice to terminate contract after last payment o We were never given a copy of the contract until I requested it. o We were never under the impression this was a credit purchase as many from the collections dept. refer too. o Were never given any indication through out the months we were under a credit agreement for the following reasons: 1. No credit line check as all other credit vendors perform at inception 2. No monthly credit statements given with remaining balance due 3. No buyout option in contract as usual indicator of credit purchase o There is no mention of credit purchase anywhere in the contract o Obligation to pay is not mentioned in contract if buyer gives termination notice while in good standing with the school, which was done. o School changed class hours which made it more difficult to attend classes o School has ceased previous contracts based on students who have moved and can no longer attend classes. o We moved out of town elected to terminate our contract after already paying 2 months tuition and not attending classes. o Wujido has judged our move, not far enough to terminate the contract, yet there are no boundaries set forth in the contract o Dr. Harkins (in phone conversation 7/19/02) stated we had credit purchase and claimed full value of contract was achieved with 5 classes of attendance. There is no mention of this in the contract. o # of classes that contract purchases is 288, we only attended 20 classes. o With a mortgage payment and other real credit purchases we cannot afford to be paying $250/month, yet Dr. Harkins has no sympathy even though he knows we are not attending the classes he insists on taking our money. He even has people calling to ensure payments will be made on time! Stay clear of this place, you find yourself in an extremely long term contract with no recourse and no out. Dr. Harkins is claiming to be the Texas 2003 business man of the year! What the state of Texas doesn't know is that his hugely growing source of revenues is not from offering outstanding classes and value! Its from increasingly signing people into contracts for long term revenues. Of course the numbers are going to look goood! He's a deceptive crook! Pissed Off Dallas, Texas
