Regarding rebates processed by the clearinghouse known as "Young America", I can't list all my specific experiences - there are too many.

I am an IT consultant who frequently makes purchases on behalf of our clients. Manufacturers use rebates as a marketing tactic to make their products appear more cost effective. Over the years I have pursued these rebates wherever possible and my experience can be summed up as this:

Of all the rebates that I have submitted to Young America only about half have produced any results. The rest I never hear from. Of the half that I received anything about, about half of those produced results only after I followed up with them with letters (just try finding a phone number for these guys!) I now rarely pursue rebates because it simply isn't worth the time.

My advice to all is to ignore any rebates in your decision of which product to buy. If the product you purchase has a rebate and you actually recieve it - so much the better.

Mary you're lying!!!

My experience with Young America is terrible...The company is simply put "rip off artists". Your statement that only 5% of submissions are rejected is in my opinion a complete fabrication. 100% of my submissions have been rejected for lying reasons. The last stated that I did not include the serial number...if you got the submission you got the serial number since they were on the same page!!!! The serial number was also on the UPC attached and also copied on the same page..Why lie and cheat?
You also state that if you can't afford the product without the rebate you cannot afford the product...Are you nuts? This is not about wheather you can afford a product it is about being ripped off!!! Do you like being cheated?

Your percentages are WAY off:

I work for Young America Corp., handling rebates every day, and I can tell you that it's only about 5% of the TOTAL rebates we handle that end up unqualified (this means the consumer messed up and didn't send in something necessary to get the rebate). Maybe 10" of those unqualified rebates are because our automated mail slitter cut out some necessary information, such as a date from a cash register receipt or a cell phone number on an order form. If that's the case, the keyer has no choice but to unqualify the order as the keying program asks certain questions that have to be answered in order to validate a rebate. If ANY of the required information is missing, then the rebate is unqualified. Now, if you get one of those letters, send it back (not a copy of it, we need the original letter with the barcodes on the back) and either send the copies you made or write the missing information on the unqualified letter. We'll key that information, and 9 times out of 10, you'll get your rebate.
I would hope that you aren't one of those people who sent in a blank order form in an envelope with no return name/address on it. I can't tell you how many of those I have seen, just on the Verizon rebates (cell phone number is filled in, but nothing else is). We don't have access to Verizon's database of customers/cell phone numbers, so if all you give us is your cell phone number, a upc, and a cash register receipt, with no name/address, I'm sorry, you aren't getting a rebate. I'm not Miss Clio and I can't get your name and address by touching the envelope, and I'm not psychic, I can't pull it out of thin air, either.

If you can't afford to buy something without a rebate, then you can't afford to buy it, period. Because you aren't going to read the rebate form, you expect the salesman to tell you everything you need to know, and s/he doesn't know it all (unless they happen to have read the rebate form, which I rather doubt).
From personal experience with salespeople, I know that they don't care if I get my rebate or not, all they care about is making the sale, and getting me to buy something more expensive because it has a rebate. But, I'm cheap and I refuse to fall for that. When I shop, I have a set dollar amount in mind, and I refuse to go over it, no matter how good they make the deal sound. Now, if they can meet my price, AND give me a rebate, I might do business with them.
My advice to you is to READ the rebate form thoroughly, make copies of EVERYTHING you send, and if you didn't get the rebate form when you made your purchase, DON'T throw anything away. Keep it in a safe place until you get the rebate form, and then see what you need to send in order to get the rebate. And don't send a rebate that goes to Mesa, AZ or Miami, FL, or anywhere else in with a rebate that goes to Young America, MN. That adds a couple of weeks' handling time to your rebate. If you have several rebates going to Young America, and they all are different post office boxes, send them in separate envelopes. If you put them all in one envelope, that's going to add to processing time, and keep you from getting your rebates in a timely manner. You might save on postage doing that, but instead of getting your rebate in the 8-10 weeks listed on the rebate form, it could take 10-15 weeks.

All in all, considering the amount of mail that Young America handles on a weekly basis (over a million pieces a week), I think they do a pretty good job. After all, we can only process what the consumer sends us.

Wow, for an IT person you are pretty stupid.

Young Americas address if you were to do some looking around this particular site is clearly in YOUNG AMERICA, MN, NOT Mesa, AZ. How can Young America be ripping you off if they are not even handling your rebate? Maybe the reason you havent been getting your rebate is because you cannot follow instructions. All rebate forms for the Mesa, AZ company have telephone numbers as well as requirements and terms and conditions. That is YOUR responsibility to read and understand all of those.

Its really quite simple. Send in the requested materials. Retain photocopies for your records. Call within four weeks of sending it in to make sure it was received and if not that allows you sufficient amount of time to resend it, providing you did not wait till the final postmark deadline. Anytime you do not understand what is needed and have questions or concerns regarding the rebate process you can always call that handy 1800 # that is provided on your form, allowing that you read the form.
