First of all, the initial report above (in response to Kimberly) was not "Kimberly" or my daughter.  I am Kimberly and my daughter is only 6 years old!  Clearly when you want to defend yourself you find it easiest to flat out lie.  There are clearly people all over this site that have witnessed the horrible way you treat animals.  All these people are having the same problem I have had with hip dysplasia and other health issues that make these dogs suffer!!!

As for Mike "claiming" he spoke with a kennel that has my dog... I am appalled that this man has flat our LIED about me and my dog!  He has NO ethics.  I don't know how he can claim he spoke with a "shelter" that had my dog, when I still have my dog today! He is not overweight, especially since we continually pay money to have him do water therapy with our vet to help his hips since he is in constant pain. He likes to swim, but running like a normal dog makes him sore and whine while trying to get comfortable later at night. He is currently living with my mother because I worry about his biting around my small children. But as soon as they are old enough to be careful around him and respectful of his space, we can bring him home.

It is truly sad what these people are doing for money... and since they treat precious animals so horribly, I guess I shouldn't be surprised they would totally lie to try to protect their puppy mill.

As for the other breeders explaining how common hip dysplasia is... you are right.  And you are also right that it takes a lot of work to run a kennel properly.  But a puppy that has hip dysplasia - SEVERE his dysplasia - at only 6 months old is NOT normal.  And the Dennys are NOT running a proper kennel that cares about the dogs.  Please don't buy a puppy from these people.  Kimberly

I have just been contacted by the shelter that this dog was given to by Kimberly. I spoke at length with the person that is taking care of the dog. Kimberly shaved him. She overfed him, he is overweight. He exhibits no signs of aggression and is a very "sweet, wonderful dog" that The shelter lady would keep as a therapy dog if she didn't already have five. She thinks that this dog got very little exercise. All of this from Kimberly who loved him too much to send him back to us for an exchange puppy. Who claimed to know all about care and training of Goldens. Who demanded that we refund her money and let her keep the dog.
We are working with the shelter to provide funds to help with this dogs care. The lady who is caring for the dog told us that when she is ready for another therapy dog she would contact us based on this dogs temperment. She said "you should be proud of this dog."

As a former K9 Person I can tell you that even if a dog is certified not to have bad hips, his or her offspring can because dog genetics are the hardest to predict,according to some experts who explained why they can't clone your deceased dog yet.

It is unfortunate and when my guys came down with it, I made them as comfortable as possible, gave them glucosamine and chondrotin and they had their pills and I had mine and we kept on working as long as we both could.

What is abuse is to know for sure that an animal has a serious birth defect and continue to breed it knowing it future generations will be tainted or die prematurely, etc. & etc.

All large breed breeders struggle with hip dysplasia and we try to educate customers about this problem by telling them what to feed the puppy and reducing stress on the joints and letting the joints grow at a slow pace. Customers do whatever they want anyhow and then blame the breeder and want their money back. We had a customer that got a puppy at 8 weeks that was close to 10 lbs. 4 months later the pup weighed 74 lbs!!!!!!!! A weight that should be achieved over 2 years. We informed the customer that this was outragous when they told us the dog had borh hip and elbow dysplasia. They still sued us and won over $4500 in court claiming it was genetic. Both parents were xrayed and cleared.

Not only that we frequently get customers that pretend there is something wrong with the dog so that they can keep the dog but get the money back. All kinds of tricks are done to scam us hard working breeders out of our hard earned money.

If you think a breeder is in it for the money you should really try it. It is blood sweat and tears and it's a 24 hour job watching over the mommy's so that they don't lay and suffocate the puppies. Cleaning and feeding and scooping poop. Making sure each puppy is socialized. Sitting up at night with them when they get sick. It is just like having children. We spend $200 000 a year on our dogs food, vet bills, transportation, electricity, shipping and mortgage.

Most people also think that we as breeder should not have any free time. They feel they should be able to call us at 11 pm at night and if we don't respond witin seconds we are "irresponsible breeders", "puppymills" and all kinds of complaints. They are nasty and evil and when they don't get to buy a puppy they post nasty things on the internet. Most breeder that stop breeding does not stop because they are tired of their dogs but tired of the customers. They are nasty and demanding 90% of the time and do not understand that we are actually well educated people that have chosen this occupation because we enjoy it. I have a degree in Psychology, Sociology and Dentistry but found being with puppies rewarding and fun......however a lot of work.

If the customers could be more curteous I am sure the breeder would bend over backwards to help them solve whatever solution that they can come into agreement to. Being nice goes a long way customers!

Sadly hip Dysplasia is a problem with many large breed dogs including Golden Retrievers. Screening the parents for hip problems can only help to lower the instance of this problem, it is impossible to eliminate it completely. In addition other factors besides genetics can contribute to dysplasia. Overfeeding can cause a pup to grow too fast and put too much weight on young joints. Too strenuous exercise can put too much stress on the same immature joints. To blame us or call us a puppy mill, or insensitive or uncaring because of hip dysplasia is just not fair. I would expect that anyone who breeds any number of pups has the same problem.

We breed many pups each year and have a very low instance of dysplasia. When our pups are returned to us for any reason we evaluate their health with the help of our vets. We then make an informed decision on whether or not they can be placed in an appropriate home or if they will stay with us so that we can be certain that they receive the care that they will require for the remainder of their lives. All of our clients are required to read and sign a copy off our contract before they may purchase a pup from us. In addition we verbally explain our contract to each client. You may see our contracts on our site.

I do not understand why these people think that they entitled to a refund and be able to keep the pup. We are also denigrated because we make money selling our pups, I don't know anyone who breeds pedigreed pups and gives them away. We love and respect all of our animals both the dogs and the horses. This is obvious to most people who visit our site and to anyone who has physically visited our ranch. We have many many clients who send us regular pictures and emails of their pups. We are always excited to see how our "babies are progressing. We do care about them and are always saddened by health problems.

In both of the cases in this forum neither party provided us with any documentation of any problem only their verbal notification and their demand for a refund of their purchase price. Would you refund money under these circumstances.

Silvermine Kennels is only offering to refund this person because of this public complaint. When I contacted them about my 10 month old puppy having hip dysplasia (which is almost unheard of for a golden to have it this young) I was treated unprofessionally and rude. I was told that it was "their discression" if they would honor the health guarentee, AND if they did choose to honor it they would not provide a refund, only another puppy. AND I would have to return the dog I purchased.

First of all, why would I want another puppy when it is obvious they are not breeding correctly and/or raising these puppies right. AND, just because the puppy is not healthy (and partly BECAUSE the puppy is in bad health) I would not return it to them - I love this dog and so does my family... but I did not pay thousands of dollars for a dog that I am going to have to pay thousands of dollars a year to take care of because this breeder was irresponsible.

In summary, don't expect people to just "return" their dog for a refund. You may treat these dogs (obviously) as a piece of retail property, but your buyers actually love these dogs and want the best for them. Obviously the best for them does NOT including sending them back to you.

This is the same person as in the original report. The first one was her daughter. Silvermine Kennel has answered this report and offered to refund her money and have heard nothing from her. Her daughter responded in this forum that they would be keeping the pup.
