I received a ring as a gift from my Husband which I didn't care for.

I initially went to Zale's to exchange the ring. When I walked in the door I had the folder in my hand that contained the receipt. The Saleswoman without greeting me stated "Do you want an inspection?", I said "Excuse me?", she again said "Do you want an inspection?", I kind of chuckled and said "Do I look like I need an inspection, what do you mean". She pointed to the folder and said "That's an inspection certificate." I said actually it's a receipt for a ring that I want to return, as at this point I had already made up my mind I was not going to look to exchange at this store due to her rudeness.

She opened the box and shook her head as if to indicate I was a fool for returning the ring and asked if I wanted to exchange it, then opened the folder and said that my Husband had to return the ring in person. I said all I want you to do is credit back to his account. She said she couldn't do this because "it was the law" and for his protection.

At this time the other two people in the store got involved and kept repeating, it's the law. I stated that in the brochure it didn't state that the original purchaser had to return the ring. This heated conversation went on. I walked out and they proceeded to talk about me out loud before I was two feet out of the door. I turned back and said "You could have the common courtesy to not talk about me until I'm out of ear shot" and asked if they had anything they wanted to say to my face before I reported them to management. The gentleman stated, "I'm the Manager". I stated that I was referring to their Corporate office.

I started to walk away and he said "And, you have a very nice day" very sarcastically. When I didn't respond he said it again louder. At this point I stopped and called my Husband in front of him to relate what was transpiring. The Manager reached for my phone stating "I'll be glad to talk to him". I told him that wouldn't be necessary and left.

I have been on their web site, the FTC web site and the Jeweler's Association web site and can find no reference to this policy or this law. It is obvious they just didn't want me to return the ring. I see from other complaints on your site that I'm not the only one this has happened to! I think every one should be aware of Zale's deceptive business practices! Thank you for your help!
