Lon Smith Roofing and Construction was our chosen vendor to repair hail damage on our roof. We knew they were bonded and insured and would be around for any warranty work.

The installation began in July and within a few hours the A/C stopped blowing cold air. The temperature inside had reached 90 degrees. I immediately went outside to ask the Project Manager where the crew was working on the roof, and after some exchange in spanish with the crew found out that they were working near the A/C line.

The next day the A/C line was tested and the liquid line running up the side of the house to the roof was leaking and out of freon. The same roofing crew removes a 3x3 section of the roof and a it is a nail puncture. We are charged $458 to weld the line evacuate the system and put 8 pounds of freon in. The liquid line that was punctured was visibly apparent to anyone especially a trained crew that does roofing every day. A simple communication from a walk through with the crew could have avoided this.

Since the company was bonded and insured we asked them to please take care of the bill. We asked them for relief and they offered us half of the damages during a phone call to them. They were rude. They are now sending us late notices. Their response was "We can't see into the roof". We have a mountain of pictures, paperwork and witnesses that support our claim against Lon Smith Roofing.

If you are thinking about doing business with this company, make sure that they are on your "Preferred Vendor" list. We found out they were not on ours. Look up the company on the Ft. Worth BBB web site and select complaints.

AC line damage

This happened to me in 2007 when they installed my roof. It is the AC company's fault not roofers. I called our local city inspectors (for permits) and they told me that AC lines that come in contact with or close to the roof would not pass inspection (exactly for that re-roofing reason).

The AC company that installed mine in the late 90s did not get a permit to install so it was not inspected. The AC company ended up replacing the lines, though at first they wanted me to pay $200 for supplies until I mentioned the city inspector that came to my house and saw the work. The city gave me the option to file a complaint against the AC company for working with no permit but since they repaired it the same day (though I had to make many many calls to get it done) I didnt file. This all happened on a day I was to leave to go on vacation which I only do every 10 yrs, it was August and very hot and I have pets that needed to have AC while I was away. Can you say stressed out?

I did have to have Lon Smith come out 4 times to correct the flashing around my chimney to my satisfaction. The boss came out after the 3rd time and apologized, told me he understood why I was frustrated with the flashing and got it done correctly. I think they are a great company and had great results. They even searched the USA to find my light gray 3 dimensional shingles that I wanted.

Lon Smith Roofing put a hole in our AC line If you will do your homework you will find that there is no city code anywhere in the IRC code book that relates to roof deck clearance. If Lon Smith had inspected the premises professionally this would not have happened. You were fortunate. We were not.

Would you like to talk with Monika Diaz with WFAA? Monika has been reporting on the lines that the roofers have put holes in. The roofers need to own this one we are just homeowners trying to get our roofs fixed. When someone damages your property I am certain that you would want the damage repaired at no charge correct? Isn't that the right thing to do?

A/C freon line damage

Ken,

It is unfortunate that your freon line was punctured. However, let's look at this in reality.

 When Lon Smith came to your home, why would they go in to your attic ?  The problem you have is improper installation of an A/c line installed on the underside of your deck. This was faulty application by the company who installed your A/C unit freon lines.  A nail went through the plywood deck and punctured the line. If the line had been placed in the correct position then no damage would have occurred. How can you blame a roofer for something they have no control over? This is a problem that plagues good roofers and your complaint is a little over the top.

I have been involved in the roofing industry for over 40 years and hate to see someone get blamed for something that is of no fault of their own. I have no association with Lon Smith but thought a rebuttal was in order.

Same thing happened to me!

I just experienced the exact same thing 2 weeks ago, except I am the contractor. When the A/C lines are installed there are supposed to be metal protector plates installed where ever the lines are next to the decking or through studs where a nail might puncture the lines. It is poor workmanship by the A/C installer not to insure it is installed properly.
The home I was roofing had a new A/C installed a couple of years ago and the installer didn't put in the protector plates, his bad. The cost was about $525 to replace the line and new freon, which I paid. It wasn't my crews fault and like Lon Smith said, we can't see through the roof, is true. I paid for the repair, I don't know if I was legally liable or not but I didn't want to jeopardize my relationship with my customer for that amount of money. I contacted the building inspection department and they confirmed it was poor workmanship and I checked with my A/C contractor and his views were the same.

To all of those who say they that there is a code for the A/C line in a roof. Please do your homework. We approached the orgs responsible for the code and several cities in Dallas and there is no code on file period. Not local regional or national or international. There is a proposed code but it has never been acted on. The lines must be protected if they pass through wood.  When the cities decide to enforce a code on all old houses with A/C lines near a roof line then we have something. I understand gas line new construction requires a shield.

Roofer didnt cause damage your AC installer did

To incorrectly install your AC line then your installer is the one that should pay for your AC not the roofing team.

Lon Smith has been around a long time and is one of the largest roofers in the business, You dont get that by ripping off the consumer . I have had them perform some roofing repairs for me and the service was outstanding and the ymore then made a effor to provide it to the level they did.

Roofing crews dont normally walk through your attic as they assume you had the work done right in the first place . they didnt walk theough my attic first when my roof was done . nor would I suspect the AC installer didnt do their job. Now if you hired a legit AC installer to install your lines this might not have happened or they ( AC installer ) may have stood behind their work. Have you contacted the company that installed your AC lines ? There is a code for that in Austin Tx area to avoid such errors  as Houses need reroofed too often here in hail country. I would try with the installer of the AC also as they should have fixed it for free as anyone knows that you will reroof a house sooner or later and a line shouldnt be that close in the first place .It was just a matter of time no mater which company did the roofing

in defense of lon smith roofing

Your a/c installer obviously ran the line much too close to the roof decking. How did this pass inspection by the City of Flowermound?  Seems you're accusing the wrong people. 

 I think they were admirable to offer you 1/2 the repair costs. Lon Smith Roofing installed our roof last month and it was truly the most enjoyable, pain-free contractor experience we have ever had. That really says something as we are  20 yr owners of an 85 yr old home.  I will never use another roofing company and recommend them to everyone I can.   

p.s.  Why are they sending you late notices? Have you not paid for your roof?   JA - Ft. Worth, Tx

Roofer was not wrong.

The roofer was not wrong and it does not matter about the codes.  What the AC company did was wrong it does not matter about the code.Wrong is wrong and the AC did it WRONG.

I once had a customer's celing fan fall while installing someones roof.  I paid for it because I didn't want nonsense like this showing up on ripoff report

Attic inspection, AC puncture

Any experienced roofer is aware of the risk of puncturing pipes and wires when roofing a house.
Any responsible roofer will take the time to check the attic first.
