My wife and I had the unfortunate opportunity to welcome these sales rep from Kirby Company (based on a distributor out of Cheyenne, WY) to our home. They came to our door to perform a vacuum demo. My wife being the sweet gentle person that she is, let these two young men to demo a Kirby Sentria vacuum system. Complete with multiple filter papers to demostrate the efficacy of the cleaner, one young man did his very best to convince us that its the best vacuum around and that its a worthy investment. One of the first quetion I asked was the price and was absolutely floored of the $2695 quoted price. I immediately thought to myself that this is not right. I went online and researched the vacuum including checking with Consumer Reports, Amazon.com, etc. I knew right there and then that this is a scam.
Not to pissed off scammers or obviously questionable people already in my house, I kindly asked the young man(left alone by his partner by this time) to please leave and wished him luck. He slowly started packing his equipment while making a phone call to his supposed manager. This manager arrived shortly and wanted to put his spin for a sale. I told him that we're not interested. He asked me as to why? I told him that first of all, they are charging way too much for a very similar product featured from Consumer Reports an being sold at Amazon.com. He then asked me if I would be willing to pay those price. By this time, I'm absolutely certain that this is not right. This time I was a bit more firm in asking both of them to please leave our home because I'm not interested in buying a $1300.00 vacuum cleaner and certainly not from them.
I escorted the two men out the door and as I turned back around to get in my house I heard the manager call me an "asshole". I heard it loud and clear and probably should've let it go. But even then, I knew that these guys are no good scammers and will probably scam other good folks in my neighborhood/town. I turned around and confronted the guy. I asked him to please repeat what he just called me. His response was that "I didn't stutter". Right there and then I asked my wife to call the police. Luckily, the two scammers had to wait for their pickup van. They walked off from my house but this one rude scammer continued to use profanity directed to me. Their pickup van stopped by my house thinking these two were still there. By that time, the police was there and the entire crew was confronted by the police. I reported to the police of these guys are definitely scammers. Unfortunately, the police in my town couldn't do anything to stop these guys for "they have a city permit to conduct their business".
I'm writing this to warn people of scammers like these guys representing Kirby Vacuum Company. Something needs to be done and apprehend these guys/distributors from doing this. This is without a doubt illegal and I just wished the city police in my town will take it upon themselves to protect the people from scammers like these guys.
I will call the local radio station tomorrow and let tme know of these guys in town and will also contact the local newspaper to publish something about this event. The best offer for solution from the two policemen tonight was that they will "try to contact the city manager if further complaints are filed or called about them". I'm thinking in other words, they will sit idly while some poor sap or old lady will be scammed by this guys as they conduct their business in town.
This happened tonight(10-23-09), Lewistown, MT. I already emailed Kirby Company of this event.
Any suggestions on what else I can do?
