I called up DirectTV to cancel the service. I explained that somebody broke in to my place and stole my TV. I have not watched TV for a month and I had no intention to buy another TV set.

She said I had EIGHTEEN month commitment that I do not remember if they told me about and I would be with them for 4 month at the end of January. I agreed on them charging me $280 which is 14 months X $20 early termination fee.

Now, I remember, even during the installation, the contractor came in and charged $70 for the tripod which you can buy at $14 from online stores.

So, it seems that DirectTV strives on ripping people off. I would stick to bigger name companies from now on. Not really related to DirectTV but one of the reasons, I believe, that my unit was attacked out of hundreds is I had the outstanding satellite dish on my deck.

Of Course You Have An 18 Month Agreement.

AUTHOR: Ceadda - PrivateTown (U.S.A.)

You cannot get service without an 18 month agreement. Though it used to be a year. Yes, they did inform you of this because there is no way they installed without you signing something for the installation and it says on that form and several others "I agree to keep service for 18 months blah blah blah."

They also normally set up your bill to read that you have a "lease to own" agreement which is another way of stating your under contract.

Also, it is not their fault your tv got stolen. If they let you off for that then anyone could just say oh I got robbed so cancel mine for free.

You owe the money. Not paying attention to the paperwork and 18 month agreements that are common knowledge does not make it a ripoff.

I may neglected in finding out what commitment means

AUTHOR: Sean - Cupertino (U.S.A.)

I never thought it would be EIGHTTEEN months.

And, I never thought the cancellation fee would be $20 per month. So, if you want to cancel the service in the first month, it's $360. And, I don't know how the heck it could cost them that much, by a customer cancelling the service.

After the installation, I called up DirectTV to check if $70 for a tripod is reasonable pricing. I called up and asked if there's a suggested price range for a tripod. And the answer was that they have no such thing and they have no control over installation contractors. So, if a contractor wants to charge you $300, they would.

Nice!! What an organized company!! Installation is the very first thing you notice about the business and that tells a lot about how they run their business. Maybe another 5 people company??

Got another $55 charged

AUTHOR: Sean - Cupertino (U.S.A.)

When called, they said they charged another $55 because I did not return the equipment. When asked for Fedex tracking number for the return kit, they came back saying the return kit was returned to Fedex facility due to wrong address.

But, how did they, in the first place, come to my place and install the service, if they had a wrong address?

I HATE DirectTV.
