I retuned a Sony DVD player to Sears in Pineville, NC today around 10:00 a.m. The DVD player had skipped many times and had some audio issues as well.

The very unfriendly associate at the Electronics department plugged the DVD play into a TV. For whatever reason it did not malfunction as he tested it for only a couple of minutes.

He told me there was nothing wrong with it and made me feel like a liar.I told him again that it had happened on several occasions and I did not understand why it was working for him.

He gave me no choice but to pay a 15% restocking fee in order to get a refund. That came out to $6.00.

I have never purchased anything from Sears before. I got this DVD player from Sears because I found it to be a good price on an online search. I usually purchase electronics from Bxxx Bxx(((REDACTED))) who have always treated me with respect. If I ever had an issue with a product purchased at Bxx Bxx they have refunded my money, no questions asked.

I feel that Sears has stolen my $6.00. I hope you will enjoy this money as I will never shop at Sears or Sears owned K-Mart ever again. I will also tell family and friends to do the same

Best buy

AUTHOR: Ashley - Springfield (U.S.A.)

You do realize if you had done the same thing at best buy they would have charged you a 15% restocking fee also? They charge it on all electronics.

Why did you want a refund? Why not exchange it for a working DVD player? Did you not need a DVD player anymore?

There must be more to the story..

AUTHOR: Robert - Irvine (U.S.A.)

Okay you buy a $40 DVD player that you say was "skipping" and "had audio issues". Please at least tell us that you tried a couple of different DVD's that you knew were good before claiming the player was bad. Because what you describe is a symptom of a scratched/damaged/dirty DVD and not usually the player.

But let's say it was bad, why didn't you exchange it for a working one? Or was it a case where you all of the sudden decided you didn't need a DVD player and thought this was a good "reason" to return it.

Oh and by the way, your favorite store BB has resocking fees also.

A couple of you have commented, very sympathetic to Sears. Let me clear up some of your points. First I do not know why ripoff put the catagory of sex shop on here. Obviously Sears is not one.

Now let me answer the comments. While you point out that my so called favorite store Best Buy charges a fee which may be true I've never run into that with them. They believe their customer if they say something is wrong with a product. They also care more about customer service than making a quick dime off a customer.

Second point made is that it could have been a problem with a disk. I wasn't born yesterday so obviously I checked the DVD Player with many disks before I drove all the way to Sears. I had the same trouble no matter which disk I put in. I also stated that to the Sears associate who was bound and determined not to believe anything I said.

Finally, as someone said I could have just exchanged it. This is true but, my expreience was so poor with Sears I would rather get the money back and go to another store. I didn't want to go through this mess again if they gave me another broken DVD player.

Which is your option

AUTHOR: Ashley - Springfield (U.S.A.)

Most companies, on electronics, will do an exchange for a defective product. They do happen. Most companies also charge a restocking fee if you do not want to exchange and you want your money back. Since the DVD player worked in the store, there was no proof it was defective. The employee was right in offering you an exchange, but as for the refund, if its not defective they have to resell it. Now its an open box item that they have to discount. You are paying for that discount.

You realize you could have exchanged it for an unopened one, then returned the unopened one no problem right?

I also prefer Best Buy....

AUTHOR: Debbie - Cincinnati (U.S.A.)

I had a similar issue with a TV I bought at Best Buy. While it's true that BB does charge a restocking fee, it only applies if you "change your mind" about the product and decide you don't want it. I suppose it's to prevent people from buying something then finding a better deal somewhere else and returning it.

If the product is defective, they WILL take it back without charging a restocking fee. I speak from experience.

I bought a 42" LCD HDTV from Best Buy last March. It was around $1200.00. When I got it home, I realized that it wouldn't fit into the entertainment center I just purchased the day before from Ikea. (There was a sign on the entertainment center that stated it holds up to a 42" TV). Turns out, I had purchased a Samsung TV, and the speakers are on the sides of the TV, which adds to the width and thus, prevented it from fitting.

Anyway, I box up the TV and take it back to Best Buy and explain that it won't fit into the entertainment center. They didn't hesitate to take the TV back and give me a 40" (with a price adjustment since the 40" was less expensive) and they did NOT charge me a restocking fee (which would have been about $180!!)

Now, I have to assume that had I wanted to return the TV versus exchanging it, they may not have been so accommodating.

However, I have to side with the OP on this one...because if it was defective, they had no business charging him a restocking fee - theoretically, it wouldn't have been "restocked", it would have been sent back to the manufacturer for some sort of compensation. Even if they tried it at the store and it worked for them, they should have given the customer the benefit of the doubt and accepted it back as defective. That's just good customer service.
