It's bad enough that every time I go Safeway and use the 15 item or less line that one or more of their employees is in line purchasing soda and an unhealthy snack to accompany the cigarette that they are about to smoke in front of the entrance to the store and blast customers with the smoke of their noxious weed.

That's another complaint though.

Today I was in the line with one item. The person in front of me, a Safeway employee had over 30 items. I suppose she thought that 15 was an average or a suggestion.

As she was unloading her items, she laughed and joked about it with the manager who was working the register.

I brought it up that she clearly had over 15 items, and she just laughed, and he just shrugged his shoulders and said nothing.

I put my strawberries down and left. I'll never go back to that crappt Safeway again because the XXXXXXX up the road is much nicer anyway and the employees don't smoke at the entrance.

sorry, …allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company, ..plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome. Employee checks out with more

AUTHOR: Anita - Center (U.S.A.)

So you say that the employee had more then the number of items alloted. You stated that they didn't seem to be concerned when you addressed it.
You left your groceries and presumably took your business elsewhere.

All grocery stores that have limited number of items Express lines tell their employees not to refuse/turn away a customer. So eventhough a checker or other employee may mention to the customer that they have too many items, bottomline is they still have to serve the customer and handle the whole order.

At the discretion of the employee they can take a customer with more then the limited amount and ring them on Express. If the regular item lines are backed up and there are no customers in Express, the checker can help a regular customer one order at a time.

Express lanes are a convenience not a law. Have you ever needed just one item at Costco?...where I live they do not have Express lines and you can have six carts and dlollies before you.

Safeway can't be too picky about it's customers

AUTHOR: Lee Ving - San Francisco (U.S.A.)

Safeway really needs all the customer's they can get in Scottsdale. The stores have really detieriorated over the last 10 years because:

1. If people want crappy cheap food, and bad service from trailer trash employees, they go to WalMart.

2. If they want high quality food that's expensive, and good service, they go to Whole Foods or Trader Joes or AJs

3. If they want crappy over priced food and bad service from butt smoking, trailer trash employees, they go to Safeway.

To be truthful with you, I've never even seen a WalMart employee smoke in front of a store, only Safeway employees.

And to Anita, maybe you should get out more, the aforementioned establishments in category 2 enforce the 15 (or whatever) item limit. If it's not going to be enforced why have it. And your Costco example is ridiculous and irrelevant. Costco doesn't have an express lane.

I could go stand in the non-express lane at Safeway as well right?

And I suppose next you'll tell me that ALL grocery stores allow their derlict employees to smoke in front of the entrance.

safeway plays games...

AUTHOR: Ripoffs-suck - Nw Burbs (U.S.A.)

first of all i'd like to say.. there are smokers at walmart too. i've seen them.

second... safeway has a game they play with their employees. in order to get a "good" shop they have to have an express lane open. if there is only one cashier guess what... the only register open is express. it's a dumb "rule" but a lot of their rules are dumb. the shop system is a game. i've pretty much given up on it though. i don't even care anymore about those damn shops.

when safeway bought out the company i work for, a lot of our customers stopped shopping there. we had friendly service before and all the products they wanted. now we have friendly service, generic products, and less help. gee i wonder why all our stores are closing. safeway sucks.

Who Do You Think You Are?

AUTHOR: Gina - Surprise (U.S.A.)

I really could not believe what I read. Who do you think you are on talking about what people buy and do with their own money. I have lived in Arizona for over 40 years and do you know what we call Scottsdale people? We say Snottsdale because you think you are better then anyone eles and nothing but a bunch of snotts. Not all of Scottsdale people are snotts, but people like you just make it stick a little bit more. I love Safeway, everytime I go in and an emplyee sees you they always ask if you are finding everything you need and always say hi. So to me it sounds like you are better then everyone else. Sorry you had to wait a couple more min. in line just because an emplyee used the 15 itam line.

Circumstances

AUTHOR: Safeway_employee - Campbell (U.S.A.)

As someone above pointed out, we are required to keep an express lane open from 8am to 9pm, even if there are only customers with more than 15 items. I'm not familiar with this particular store, but I used to work at a smaller store (6 checkstands) and throughout most of the day the only checkstand open was one express lane. At that store it wasn't a big deal to have large orders in the express line.

As a checker, they give us discretion to take orders larger than the limit, often times I'll take full cart loads if the other lines are long and I have no customers.

Bottom line, without giving details about what else was happening in the store (how many checkstands were open? Were the lines long in the regular ones, but not the express? etc.) the story has no merit and appears petty.

The slowest part of a transaction is the customer, I spend most of my times on express waiting for the customer to finish, an order of 30 items, with a knowledgable customer (an employee) would probably go faster than most transactions.

SF Lee aka the original whiner....

AUTHOR: Anita - Center (U.S.A.)

Would you mind if I refered to you as Fifi or Princess?

Express Lanes are for morons like you...to humor you.

I worked at Safeway and some in SF.  As an employee, you are told to take any customer that comes into Express regardless of the amount of items.

I understand that you don't follow directions well, but if your boss tells you to perform your job in a certain manner, you do.  Bottom line Princess, it is money, and 30 unhealthy snacks and smokes trumps your little basket of berries.

I find it interesting that you refer to Safeway employees as Trailer Trash....and where in SF can they park it?  Where do you park yours?
