AHA sent me an E saying if I would agree to a trial membership for $6.95 for 3 mos. they would send me a free palm pilot. I was interested in their service, so agreed to the 3 month trial membership.

My credit card was billed for the $6.95. I called and requested a free coupon book and free discount hotel book. I did not receive any other information in the mail, including my free palm pilot. I called and asked about it and they said a certificate for the palm pilot would be sent to me in the mail. It never was.

I sent an E to AHA on 3-09-03 stating that I could get hotel rooms cheaper on the internet than I could with their discount hotel book, so I would not be interested in the full year membership, and specifically said I did not want to be charged on my credit card for that membership ($99.00/year). I also said I had not yet received my certificate for the palm pilot and would they please send it.

I tried to call AHA a couple times, but the wait to talk with an operator was estimated at 20 min., so I just E'd them instead, as the message suggested I do that.

On 4-09-03 I checked my credit card statement and there was the charge from AHA for $99.00 on my statement. I immediately did call AHA again, and waited about 18 min. to talk with an operator. As I was waiting I sent an E stating I was very unhappy with their company, and requested the $99.00 be refunded immediately, and that I still had not recieved a coupon for the free palm pilot.

When I talked with an operator he assured me my credit card would be credited with the $99.00 within a month, and that my membership was cancelled immediately. He also said he would E the gift dept. and tell them I still didn't have my palm pilot certificate. Then he said, "You should have called sooner." He assumed I had not called sooner, which indeed I had and instead of wasting my time I sent a couple E's with my requests, as their message directed me to do. I also told them that if they had any questions they could call me, as I didn't have 20 min. to sit on hold waiting for them.

It would seem that AHA doesn't really intend to give free palm pilots for trying their company, and that they ignore E's that don't say what they want to hear. I did keep a copy of my E from 3-09-03 requesting not to be billed and asking them to cancel my membership, so there would be no question that I really did do that. I would never do business with them again and would tell all my friends to avoid this company.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Use their website to cancel

AUTHOR: Preston - Cleveland (U.S.A.)

I had the trial membership with the free palm pilot too. However, the trial period ended before the palm pilot arrived.

I had to go to their website to cancel. A lot of companies tend to ignore emails or don't respond. You have to go to their website to officially cancel because things are automated.

I went to their website and cancelled, listing numerous reasons. Then over two weeks later, the palm pilot finally arrived. It was pretty worthless and I don't use it.

Anything that you have to pay a membership fee to get a discoutn isn't worth it. If you need hotel discounts, get AAA.

#2 Owner of Company

Compliaint Rectified

AUTHOR: Gary - Stamford (U.S.A.)

I am the Founder and President of the American Homeowners Association (AHA)®. Although the individual expressing dissatisfaction with the American Homeowners Association represents only a small percentage of our over 300,000 satisfied members, I would like to take this opportunity to update the information provided to your audience by cataloging the actions taken by AHA to resolve Dorothy's concerns appropriately.

Dorothy from Pagosa Springs, CO requested her 30-day trial membership in AHA on 2/19/03. At her request her membership was cancelled on 4/9/03. At that time she received her full refund of $99.00. Dorothy's gift was sent to her address on file on 5/28/03 to her full satisfaction.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Richard Roll

American Homeowners Association made it right.

AUTHOR: Dorothy - Pagosa Springs (U.S.A.)

American Homeowners Association did refund my money shortly after my original post, and I also received the 'palm pilot', though it was not of any value. I believe American Homeowners Association has made some improvements in their business since my dealings with them, and seem to be a legitimate business, wanting to help people; I do not believe they are a "Rip-Off" scheme.

Problem corrected by AHA

AUTHOR: Dorothy - Pagosa Springs (U.S.A.)

In 2003, after filing the report, AHA did correct the problem and I was unable to delete my comments. So while originally it seemed AHA was not 'up to par', they did come back and make restitution. I have no complaints with this company.
